What people can you remember being really popular at one point, and then seemed to drop out of existence?

Ill start with

Danielle Panabaker
Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Dean Cain and Tom Welling.
Both very famous for years for playing superman, then never really heard of since. Guess sometimes they can’t get another series, or need a break after intense years of filming.

I don't know about Tom Welling but Dean Cain is now a pro-NRA Trump-supporter.

I saw her live around 4 years ago in London. She still does the odd thing.

I think about Lauryn Hill quite a lot. Her album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is a work of genius. I loved her because she never had to flash her booty or anything. I sometimes compare her to huge female singing stars today and in my mind there's no comparison.

Yes indeed. Got my mothers in a muddle. She is in unforgotten !

Natasha Kaplinsky. She was everywhere at one point but I've not heard of her for years.

She was on Loose Women a few weeks ago. Totally unrecognisable. Heading some cause, but I can't remember what.
Oh yes, she hosted a Ukrainian family recently and it's something to do with that.
She has a fabulous husband, family, home, pet menagerie seemingly.. 😶

Glad to hear this. He's very funny and extremely clever. Rowley Birkin QC was comedy genius!

He's currently playing grandad/uncle Albert in Only Fools and Horses at the Haymarket. Saw the show on Wednesday, so funny.

A couple of people mentioned Penny Smith. She has the weekday tea time slot on Scala Radio (4pm-7pm).

Saw Kelly Brook walking her dog a few weeks ago!

What about Denise Van Outen?

She's often on Steph's Packed Lunch, weekdays on channel 4. She doesn't seem to age a bit.

Sorry, proper link here:

I cannot stand Michael Barrymore after the incident that happened in his swimming pool. I can't say more or it will get deleted. The victim's poor dad campaigned for years to get to the truth of that, now he has sadly died without ever finding out what happened. Very sad case.

JennyTheDonkey · 19/03/2023 10:03

Denise Van Outen was also in Neighbours for a while, playing the mother of Jason Donovan's real life daughter (who is now in Holyoakes). She does celeb Gogglebox sometimes too.

I was thinking this the other day! Have never seen her in anything much since Ally McBeal.

Jasper Carrot is another who seemed to vanish.

I'm sure I read that Jasper Carrot is in the Archers now

No, I agree with you. Even long before that event, he was horrible on TV. Strike It Lucky could have been an enjoyable bit of simple low-brow family entertainment - as it indeed was when Alan Carr did the reboots - but Barrymore made it unwatchable, with his deliberate humiliating of the contestants, especially the elderly couple that they usually had on.

I like that clip - but I don't think it necessarily shows MB in a good light....

NotThisWeekSatan · 19/03/2023 10:55

This thread is fascinating.

I think what it shows is how, these days there is so much choice of what we watch/listen to, it’s possible to be totally oblivious to what some people are doing.

In the old days there were four tv stations - now there’s an immense amount, plus on-demand, podcasts etc etc.

I’m sure some of the people mentioned are old enough to have retired, or have made/married enough money not to
have to work now.

But lots are just plugging away, just on a radio station you don’t happen to listen to, or a series you don’t watch, or in the theatre, so they’re just not on your radar.

Yes, a few posts up this thread! Grin Not a huge role, but he's doing a good job.

Oh I didn't realise that Stuart Lubbock's father had died, poor man. Didn't MB claim that he got his severe internal injuries by falling into a swimming pool or some such nonsense?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 19/03/2023 11:06

Sorry, I've realised that I was only focusing on how MB was on TV in my comments. Of course, far more seriously than that, it must have been indescribably devastating in real life for the Lubbock family.

Simon Thomas lost his wife and detailed his grief in depth and breached his own child's privacy in doing so - but got over it quickly and married a younger woman.

And now appears to have wiped the fact that he was previously married from history. Even when raising money for blood cancer (which his wife died from) he fails to mention her. It's very strange.

Carol Smilie. She was never off the tv at one point.

This reminds me of all the changing rooms lot: Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen, Anna Ryder Richardson, Graham Wynn, Lynda Barker. They were never off our screens at one point!

LLB is still very much and went on to design wallpaper didn't he? I think LB starting designing for the high street too?

I think ARR bought a zoo but something went wrong? Didn't she have financial difficulties? Can't remember!

Not sure what happened to my favourite, Graham W, his designs were always the best imho!

And wasn't there another one who pretended she had cancer and stole money from them?

Itawapuddytat · 19/03/2023 14:55

Winona Ryder is doing very well with "Stranger Things", season 4 last year, next season hopefully next year.
