A question for Bake Off lovers - who would you have chosen as a presenter

My family love GBBO and we’re a bit unsure about AH as the new replacement. We don’t know who we would have chosen though. Mel & Sue were our favourites, we liked Sandi as well.

Who would you have chosen?

Problem for me is that anyone I consider funny would not be remotely interested in presenting this programme.

I'd love Me Martin to do it - but why would she?

Kemah Bob would be interesting

NannyGythaOgg · 17/03/2023 22:34

Andi Oliver would be a definitel improvement on PH

I'd have loved Tamsin Grieg.

Didn't see this earlier but yes I think she'd also be good

Mae Martin not Me Martin

FabledEasterEgg · 17/03/2023 22:35

I’m a miserable fucker generally, but Alison’s happy demeanour works for me. Genuine ray of sunshine - absolutely perfect for bake off.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 17/03/2023 22:35

I think Alison will be good and hopefully won't take any crap from Paul Hollywood. The sooner he goes, the better.

I love Jenny Eclair but she is also loud , middle aged, down to earth and in your face. Can you explain what characteristics you feel would make her a better choice than the first non white member of the Bake Off presenting team?

Knew that comment would come. I also think Nadiya Hussein would be good. But she’s a bit too similar to Prue and Paul.
Of course Matt Lucas is Jewish if we’re listing minorities. But then “Jews don’t count” as David Baddiel wrote.

DidyouNO · 17/03/2023 22:37

At the risk of sounding boring I'd like just a voiceover, describing what's going on, what the bakers are doing and a little food history thrown in like the used to. It's not about the presenters and it's all a little distracting.

PacificallyRequested · 17/03/2023 22:42

Mary Berry. Yes, I'm still bitter!

LucyLeave · 17/03/2023 22:44

I actually like Pru much more than boring Mary Berry.

gingersnappz · 17/03/2023 21:19

Ignore me! Thought the initials referred to Amanda Holden!

Omg, thank fuck it isn't her!!!

I like Alison Hammond but don't know if she's too loud/in your face for bake off. I like the previous contestant who presents juniors, didn't know his name was Liam until pp mentioned him, but yes I think he'd be perfect. The right amount of calm with some humour thrown in.

Madeintowerhamlets · 17/03/2023 22:48

I think Alison Hammond is one of the best choices for presenter. I didn’t realise there had been a backlash. Hopefully she’ll prove the doubters wrong.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/03/2023 22:50

For me it would be someone kind of dry and not "flashy" funny - Sara Pascoe maybe? Or Alice Levine.

SirChenjins · 17/03/2023 21:36

I voted Nadya Hussain on the other thread - but I’m going to change that to Bob Mortimer. I’d watch every episode if he was presenting it.

Oh yes Bob would be brilliant

MeinKraft · 17/03/2023 22:52

Actually I've had a couple of rums and I'd now like to nominate Harry Styles.

Interesting how the vast majority of people who want someone other than Alison, chose a white presenter.

I commented on another thread earlier tonight that I thought Andi Oliver would have been amazing. I know someone on here thinks she's too expert, but on the Great British Menu, she's not really using her knowledge and I think her personality would be perfect. She's very nurturing and warm, without being too boisterous - and I genuinely would LOVE to see her do GBBO.

I like AH but I think her natural exuberance might detract from the contestants and make it a bit too much of the "Alison Hammond show". I think it's the wrong vibe for her. I'd be delighted to be proved wrong though.

But on your subject of race, I didn't think of Andi Oliver because of her skin colour, but more because she does such an amazing job on British Menu. She happens to be black.

However, I was trying to think of another black presenter that would fit the role well. Please bear in mind I'm not a big celebrity or entertainment fan!! I can't actually think of anyone. My ideal person for the role would be someone who's a bit older, and has a calm, subtly funny and warm persona - someone who will put contestants at ease but also has a bit of humour.

So bearing that in mind @Whadda - can you suggest someone (other than Andi obviously). Maybe the issue isn't that people are deliberately picking white women - but maybe there's just a real lack of black female presenters of a certain age? I would say that's changing now as there are more younger, black TV presenters/celebrities....but very few in the bracket that I think fits this show. Am I missing someone obvious???

TomatoSandwiches · 17/03/2023 22:57

I'd love someone quite taciturn like Trevor McDonald to judge, the contrast would be entertaining I think.

I can! AJ Ododu fits that bill perfectly. Do you know who else would be great and actually knows about baking - Lorraine Pascale.

bumblefeline · 17/03/2023 21:10

Alison Hammond will be good I think. Other than that maybe Paul Merton, Susan Calman?

We still laugh about Susan Calman on Great British Menu. “Get amuse bouching” etc. but … actually she wasn’t great as a presenter

Rummikub · 17/03/2023 23:07

Lorraine and
Rav Gill to judge.
liam Charles and Alison as presenters. Perfect.

I would definitely watch that.

I don’t watch This morning unless Alison is presenting.

StalkedByASpider · 17/03/2023 23:10

@MeinKraft

Aaaah thank you!

re AJ Ododu - I did think of her, but I thought she was too young. Obviously she's not actually too young - but I mean given my mental image of who would be perfect for the role. I have only seen her in a couple of things and she's absolutely lovely, but I would probably go for someone a bit older. Although I'd probably prefer AJ to Alison as she's a bit more chilled.

Re Lorraine Pascale - I have never heard of her! Honestly, I really am shit with celebrity stuff.... I just googled her and she looks like she'd be an excellent fit. Knows her stuff re baking, and probably in the age bracket that fits my mental image (sorry Lorraine!!)

Judi love? Judi was great on the
teaching stand up show.

augustusglupe · 17/03/2023 23:12

I wasn't sure about Alison, but I feel it may work. I think she'll 'get' Noel and vice versa.
Agree that Prue is a massive improvement on Mary. I can't bear her

Rummikub · 17/03/2023 23:14

I feel like Mary has given Alison her seal of approval by being in the same comic relief sketch as her.

Can we confirm you mean Lorraine Pacale as a judge and not Lorraine Kelly Grin
