A question for Bake Off lovers - who would you have chosen as a presenter

My family love GBBO and we’re a bit unsure about AH as the new replacement. We don’t know who we would have chosen though. Mel & Sue were our favourites, we liked Sandi as well.

Who would you have chosen?

Talking about a black woman getting a job and listing everyone who would be better at it than her is racist and offensive.

Absolute rubbish.

weebleswobblebuttheydontfalldown · 17/03/2023 22:01

Allison Hammond is so much better than other suggestions on here so far! She has a good sense of humour, I like her!

Clioma · 17/03/2023 22:01

@Whadda I can't speak for others but I mentioned one other person I'd like to see do it. She is white but that had nothing to do with it. Perhaps some of us can see beyond colour and judge people on merit.

I abhor racism, but I also detest being judged as racist for no valid reason at all.

I would have chosen a comedian. Preferably a woman. Anybody other than a daytime ITV personality. At least it’s not Philip Schofield.

GettingThereCharleyBear · 17/03/2023 22:07

I like AH 😊😍

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 17/03/2023 22:08

Liza Tarbuck would be fabulous.

MMAMPWGHAP · 17/03/2023 22:09

I’ve watched every single episode of Bake Off right from the start. I think she’s a dreadful choice. Too in your face. Like the suggestion of Jenni Eclair from the names mentioned above.

BishyBarnyBee · 17/03/2023 22:13

I don't think it's fair to say that everyone suggesting a different presenter is racist.

But I do think some of the responses I've seen online are snobbish and/or racist.

One person was wittering on about her not being suitable because Bake Off waa archetypally English and referred to the gentle sound of cricket being played on a summer's day. Another said C4 were playing the diversity game.

It must be so depressing to be black and talented and know that when you get a job a certain kind of people will say it's for diversity reasons.

I wish her all the luck in the world.

MuddyFeet01 · 17/03/2023 22:16

Siobhan McSweeney from the Pottery Show could do it.

Err, no. If people objected against Alison because she is black, yes, However, people are objecting against her for other reasons, which has nothing to do with her race.

i think you are looking for racism, where it doesn’t exist,

QueenOfHiraeth · 17/03/2023 22:17

I don't dislike AH, she seems like a warm and attractive woman, but I find her "look at how chaotic I am" schtick really frustrating. It's as though the only way to be tolerated as a plus size woman is to be a clown

I can't stand Fake Stacey.

You beat me to it. Cant stand her

I think Alison will be great

I think she is quite rude and undermining of the contestants at times.

I love Jenny Eclair but she is also loud , middle aged, down to earth and in your face. Can you explain what characteristics you feel would make her a better choice than the first non white member of the Bake Off presenting team?

RicchT · 17/03/2023 22:20

Alison will be fantastic, she is funny and warm.

Would have loved Alan Carr though or even Bradley Walsh 😁

MeinKraft · 17/03/2023 22:20

I'd have loved Tamsin Grieg.

Rummikub · 17/03/2023 22:22

I think Alison will be great. A lovely warm quality to her that’s perfect for bake off.

HamstersAreMyLife · 17/03/2023 22:22

I don't really know Alison Hammond but I was hoping for a comedian, I had thought Ellie Taylor may get it after her success in pottery throwdown but I like susan calman for it too. Although Ellie Taylor, Ria Lina or jen brister would have been a nice contrast to noels silliness in the way Sandi was.

Clioma · 17/03/2023 22:23

I was the person who suggested Jenny Eclair. I liked her when she appeared on Bake Off and I enjoy her podcast. I'd like to see her present the show. Maybe she'd be good, maybe she wouldn't.
I'd prefer to see her to Alison Hammond. That doesn't make me racist. It just means I prefer one woman over another. Absolutely nothing to do with the colour of their skin.

bellac11 · 17/03/2023 22:24

What is the exact definition of a comedienne though? She is really funny and sharp/witty, very quick with it, so that sort of falls into that category for me

I think it's Alison's links to ITV and Holly and Phil that are probably turning a lot of people off! Like she's about to burst into a spiel about a competition where you could win £20,000 and an all inclusive holiday to the Maldives every time there's a break.

emmaliz · 17/03/2023 22:24

Alison Hammond is perfect. The woman brings me joy, she's funny and comes across really well. I'm really happy it's her!

StepHigh · 17/03/2023 22:26

Stacey Dooley instead of Noel, Andi Oliver instead of Paul.

TheClampetts · 17/03/2023 22:30

I love Alison Hammond so I'm happy it's her. Such a ray of sunshine.

I meant stand up type of comedian, just because I tend go enjoy watching them as presenters but I have no view either way about Alison as the only time I've seen her was on a gogglebox clip and comic relief today so I don't know what she's like as a presenter. Will be watching the next series with interest.
