What do you call your grandmother?

Or if she’s sadly no longer here what did you call her?

my granny has always been granny but if I was to talk about her to someone I’d now say ‘gran’ rather than granny. I only had one set of grandparents.

my mum is also granny to my dc.

my kids also have a nanny and a nanna.

anyway, as we know it’s Mother’s Day next week and I’ve always struggled to find granny cards or gifts. Plenty of Nan, nanny, Grandma etc but granny seems very limited.

does no one use granny anymore?

went into the card factory today and found one single card with grannie on it - would rather granny but hey ho and one single gift had granny on it but plenty of Grandma available.

anyone else have this struggle?

seems trivial but it just annoys me. Same with Christmas and birthdays. I never had a prob finding a ‘granny & grandad’ Christmas card but granny on its own is hard. Sadly my grandad is no longer with us.

probably a pointless post just a little annoyed at the lack of ‘granny’ around!

My Scottish grandmother was always granny. The English one grandma.

TheGriffle · 12/03/2023 16:15

Paternal - Grandma Nan

Maternal - Grandad Nan

Both normally abbreviated to Nan, only used full names to distinguish when talking about them.

I never had any grandparents sadly....all died before I was born. However, my kids call my mother, grandma.

Hellocatshome · 12/03/2023 16:15

Grandma which where I live seems a lot less prevalent than Nana.

ringofrosies · 12/03/2023 16:16

I know of far more Granny’s than I do Nan and Grandma yet there’s hardly any cards etc

BabbleBee · 12/03/2023 16:17

One of mine was Nan, the other was Nanna. My kids use Nanny for both mine and DH’s mums but have a little nickname that follows to identify them in conversation.

iusedtobeasize8 · 12/03/2023 16:18

They were both Grandma and then their surname.
Eg. Grandma Smith and Grandma Jones
Quite strange and formal now I think about it.
My kids had a Grandma and a Nana.

Try 'thortful' online cards, you can personalise and have them posted direct to recipient or posted to you for adding a handwritten signature.

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 12/03/2023 16:21

Grandma and Nanny.

Thanks all. Should have said my grandad was grandad/great grandad. My kids call their grandfather also grandad and also Grampy.

I only had one set of grandparents as never knew my father!

My granny was a granny and my mum is now a granny. There isn't much out there with granny on but I don't buy cards for grandmothers on mother's day because they aren't my children's mother's so at the moment it's moot for me. You could do a Moonpig one and edit the writing maybe?

Thank you. I do usually order online to socks the issue but disappointed at the shops lack of variety today!

My mum is called Granny by my children.

Eatentoomanyroses · 12/03/2023 16:24

Nanny

Tisfortired · 12/03/2023 16:24

I call my own nanna, my DC have a granny (MIL) and a grandma (my mum)

MyMachineAndMe · 12/03/2023 16:24

I would call mine nannan and grandad; I'd add their surname if I was talking about them rather than to them. Dh called his gran and grandad. My mam is called grandma by her grandkids (or grandsods, as she calls them 😂).

RunTowardsTheLight · 12/03/2023 16:25

I called mine Grandma and Grandpa (only knew one set).

My DC have a Granny and Grandpa and a Nanny and Grandad.

RainbowConnection1 · 12/03/2023 16:26

I called mine Gran first name, Gran surname and Gran surname (last being my great grandmother.)

Tinkeytonkoldfruit · 12/03/2023 16:27

Both of my grandma's were Granny, my mum is also Granny to my DD. My MIL is Nanna (she's from NE and fairly standard there).

I tend to buy one for my granny as she was and still is like a second mother to me and often there for me more than my mother was but totally get that! I only said to my partner today to make sure he gets me something nice from the kids as I’ve been shopping for our mothers today but deserve a treat for myself, don’t expect anything expensive and my kids have SEN and cannot do it for themselves!

I also have the same issue with birthdays and Christmas, not just Mother’s Day!

I have made cards on moonpig was hoping to get it done today 😊

I called mine Nanny as a child and Nan as an adult (london)
Mine called my mum Nanny as a child and Nan as an adult.
My grandkids call me Nanna.

MrsMoggy · 12/03/2023 16:33

I have a Nanna (mum’s mum) and Grandma (dad’s mum) I also had a Great Nanna. It’s difficult to find a Nanna card with two N’s!

My mum and MIL are both Nanna to my son, they just use Nanna and then their names afterwards to distinguish between the two

Newjumper2023 · 12/03/2023 16:33

I had one grandma, two nans, and a granny (great and grandparents). My dc call their grandmother something very outing/obscure so would never be able to get a card. We either do blank /generic cards or usually they make them (even now as teens).

fairtrauchled · 12/03/2023 16:35
