What do you call your grandmother?

Or if she’s sadly no longer here what did you call her?

my granny has always been granny but if I was to talk about her to someone I’d now say ‘gran’ rather than granny. I only had one set of grandparents.

my mum is also granny to my dc.

my kids also have a nanny and a nanna.

anyway, as we know it’s Mother’s Day next week and I’ve always struggled to find granny cards or gifts. Plenty of Nan, nanny, Grandma etc but granny seems very limited.

does no one use granny anymore?

went into the card factory today and found one single card with grannie on it - would rather granny but hey ho and one single gift had granny on it but plenty of Grandma available.

anyone else have this struggle?

seems trivial but it just annoys me. Same with Christmas and birthdays. I never had a prob finding a ‘granny & grandad’ Christmas card but granny on its own is hard. Sadly my grandad is no longer with us.

probably a pointless post just a little annoyed at the lack of ‘granny’ around!

Paternal: Nanny First Name
Maternal: Babcia (Polish family)

Ringmaster27 · 12/03/2023 16:37

And my mum is Nanny or Nana to my DCs.
She says that Grandma makes her feel old 😂

gingercat02 · 12/03/2023 16:37

Nana and Granda (dad) Nanny and Poppy (mum).
DS has granny (dad) Nannie (mum). Both GF were grandad but both passed.
I would like to be Grandma if the time comes

My grandsons have Grandma (me), granny, grandad, grandpa, great gran and GG. I had a Nana and Lala, Papa and Popo.

pawz · 12/03/2023 16:40

I had a Nana and an Oma.

mondaytosunday · 12/03/2023 16:48

No idea as hardly knew them before they passed away. My children called their grandmothers Grandma X or Grandma.

Squidgoals · 12/03/2023 16:57

My grandmother was gran. My other grandmother wanted to be called granny but I only met her once and honestly don't remember what I called her.
My kids called their grandmothers Grandma 'Name'. When one died the remaining one became just Grandma. Brutal!

IHeartGeneHunt · 12/03/2023 16:59

One was Nainie and one was Grandma.

tuvamoodyson · 12/03/2023 17:00

Nana.

TheClash2023 · 12/03/2023 17:03

Grandma. She's been dead for 30 years. My own casualty kids had a nanny and a grandma.

CoodleMoodle · 12/03/2023 17:08

I had a Nanny/Nan and a Gran. My great-grandmother (Gran's Mum) was Oma as she was German, she died when I was 2 but we still refer to her as Oma. My other GGM was Great-Nan but I never met her.

DM is Nanny/Nan and MIL is Nanna. I can usually find one or the other on cards, it depends. For awhile all I could find was Nanna, at the moment it all seems to be Nanny. I can sometimes find an alternative spelling (Nannie/Nana).

TheYearOfSmallThings · 12/03/2023 17:12

I've also had trouble finding a "Granny" card - only WH Smith had a few.

I didn't have any grandmothers (they died young) and DS calls my Mum "Granny". My Irish friends' mothers (South Dublin) have also mostly chosen to be "Granny", whereas my English friends' mothers prefer other versions.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 12/03/2023 17:13

Gran.

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 12/03/2023 17:13

Nanny when small, then Nan.

My mum is nanny/nan to my nieces and nephews.

Secretboringsister · 12/03/2023 17:19

Nonnie

CharlotteFlax · 12/03/2023 17:49

I have the same problems with "granny" cards for my mum. There's usually a choice of one! Until recently it's been a Forever Friends one but seems to have been replaced by the ubiquitous Me To You bear.

To answer your question, I had a granny and a nan. When I had children my mum was very eager to be called granny. Not sure why cos my granny was a bitch and my mum's mum was nan!

tregunamekoidestrecorumsatisdee · 12/03/2023 18:01

One Irish, one Scottish both Granny

MajorCarolDanvers · 12/03/2023 18:03

Both were Grandma when I was little and Gran when I got to my teens.

My kids know use Grandma too

Mutabiliss · 12/03/2023 18:09

My mum is granny. But do you really need to get a card with their relationship on it? They know who they are.

BadgeronaMoped · 12/03/2023 18:12

Paternal grandmother was Granny, maternal is Nana. My mum goes by Mimi and DH's mum chose to be Grandma.
I like Granny/Gran for the future if any of my DC have kids of their own.

Brazilagogo · 12/03/2023 18:15

Nana and Gran

My Mum was Grandma to my nephews

Travelationjubilation · 12/03/2023 18:18

Grandma and Grandpa. Never ever Nan or grandad. They’re proper snobs and consider Nan and Grandad as much too working class for them. Great grandmother was Grandma first name

nana and papa for the other set. They were also meant to be grandma and grandpa but my eldest started with nana and papa and it just stuck for all the grandchildren

Paperexcelandpens · 12/03/2023 18:26

Nanny she refuses to have anything to do with gran / grandma type names as she says they sound old

celandiney · 12/03/2023 18:31

Both my grandmothers were Grandma Surname to begin with, but my paternal grandmother lived with us and we called her Gran.My maternal grandmother we called Grandma when we were talking to her. No grannies!

KezzabellaB · 12/03/2023 18:46

I'm 'Nana' to my two little rascals, as is their other grandmother. The babies are both under three at the moment so no need to differentiate between the two grandmothers yet but am expecting it in the future. 'Other' Nana has already referred to herself as Nana (and her first name) but I don't particularly like that for me. I guess it will evolve as the kids get old enough to make up their own names for us themselves 😊
