What do you call your grandmother?

Or if she’s sadly no longer here what did you call her?

my granny has always been granny but if I was to talk about her to someone I’d now say ‘gran’ rather than granny. I only had one set of grandparents.

my mum is also granny to my dc.

my kids also have a nanny and a nanna.

anyway, as we know it’s Mother’s Day next week and I’ve always struggled to find granny cards or gifts. Plenty of Nan, nanny, Grandma etc but granny seems very limited.

does no one use granny anymore?

went into the card factory today and found one single card with grannie on it - would rather granny but hey ho and one single gift had granny on it but plenty of Grandma available.

anyone else have this struggle?

seems trivial but it just annoys me. Same with Christmas and birthdays. I never had a prob finding a ‘granny & grandad’ Christmas card but granny on its own is hard. Sadly my grandad is no longer with us.

probably a pointless post just a little annoyed at the lack of ‘granny’ around!

I had six grandparents. All were grandma/grandad followed by their surname if needing to differentiate, apart from my dad's mum, who was Nana "surname".

Anskl · 12/03/2023 22:59

Grandma and Nana.

Grandma was 20 years older than Nana and the name sounds so much older to me.

TitoMojito · 12/03/2023 23:01

Both my grans were Gran. Gran Surname to differentiate in conversation.

I had two Grandma's although as a teenager I did call adjust one to Gran sometimes.

My DD has a Grandma and a Granny. It's definitely hard to find cards with Granny on. Grandpa is even harder!!

MaidOfSteel · 12/03/2023 23:02

Nanna. When I was a kid, many moons ago, I could never find a card with 'Nanna' on it. There wss the odd one with nan so I would add the na bit manually!
Talking about her here reminds me just how much I still miss her, even after 35 years.

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/03/2023 23:03

Can’t remember because she died when I was very small.
I’m a grandmother though and very proud to be called Granny.

HereComesMaleficent · 12/03/2023 23:08

It gets confusing in this house, 3 generations of women and then my son also. So we all have different names that we shout at each other so we know who's calling who 🤣

So I say Mam (for my mother) and Nan (for my nan)

My mother says (Mum) for her mum/my nan.

My son calls me mummy, and then my mother (his grandmother) nanny and then his great grandmother nana.

Some days all you get is variations yelled up the stairs to each other 🤣

Thanks all. Should have said my grandad was grandad/great grandad. My kids call their grandfather also grandad and also Grampy.

I only had one set of grandparents as never knew my father!

Mine were Nanny & Grandad. However my kids have Nanny & Grandad and Nanna & Grampy

UWhatNow · 12/03/2023 23:17

We use granny too and have the same issue finding cards…

I was heartened to know that the late queen was also ‘granny’ - so at least it’s classy!

RampantIvy · 12/03/2023 23:21

I live in South Yorkshire and people usually say nanan for grandmother round here.

ForYouManImADoomBoy · 12/03/2023 23:38

i only had one set of grandparents and they were Nanan and Bampa.

thegreylady · 12/03/2023 23:50

My maternal grandmother was always called Mother by her grandchildren. Her mother was Nana to us and my paternal grandmother was Grandma.
I am Grandma (my choice).

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 12/03/2023 23:52

Both mine were Granny. Nearly every Irish person I know calls their grandmother Granny.

wlv12 · 12/03/2023 23:54

My grandparents were Nan/Nanny and Grandad

My parents are Nan/ny and Grandad, my husbands parents Nana and Grandad.

I always found our local card factory had minimal Nanny cards and when they did, it was spelt Nannie 🙄

Zola1 · 12/03/2023 23:55

My wonderful, kind, lovely grandmother was 'Nan'. My other one isn't nice at all, she's Grandma. I associate Grandma with an old witch type figure as a result 😂

OnGoldenPond · 12/03/2023 23:57

Called both Grandma, to distinguish between them one was known by her surname ( think Grandma Smith but not) and one was known as Grandma Lady for some bizarre reason lost in the mists of time Grin

Bumply · 13/03/2023 00:06

My boys had Grandma and Granddad on one side and Granny Pat on the other

jays · 13/03/2023 00:28

I called my gran granny. My ds called my mum granny too. Always managed to find at least one card that said granny on it but if the worst came to the worst we’d have added an NY to the end of gran on the card. Sadly neither of those lovely women are here anymore but my mum used to always say she’d take the most horrible card that said granny on it over the most beautiful card that said gran or grandmother etc, she loved being a ‘granny’.

ConsuelaHammock · 13/03/2023 00:53

Granny and Na-na

ConsuelaHammock · 13/03/2023 00:58

I only had one grandfather and he was granda. My children cal their grandparents granny and granda.

iminvestednow · 13/03/2023 01:03

You are entitled to call you grandparents whatever you like, it’s weird to expect multinational card companies to cater to your specific need. They produce cards based on the ones that sell. My father liked to be called Pater and mother Mater but didn’t kick up a fuss that there were no specific greetings cards. It’s weird you think there should be.

SunsetStrip · 13/03/2023 01:05

I had Nanna and Gran. My dc have 2 Grandmas. I want to be Granny.

SzeliSecond · 13/03/2023 01:07

My mil has asked to be a granny. Ds is 4 months old and I'm already finding it a pain! Granny cards are non existent!

DFWM · 13/03/2023 01:12

I have a maternal grandmother only, she is called nanna when discussing within the family (I.e. How's nanna? Anyone heard from nanna?) But when discussing her with friends, it's usually "my nan" (I.e. yes my nan is OK...been to see my nan).

My kids call their maternal grandmother nannan, and their paternal grandmother nanna.

My partner has a maternal grandmother only, too, and she is called grandma.
