What do you call your grandmother?

Or if she’s sadly no longer here what did you call her?

my granny has always been granny but if I was to talk about her to someone I’d now say ‘gran’ rather than granny. I only had one set of grandparents.

my mum is also granny to my dc.

my kids also have a nanny and a nanna.

anyway, as we know it’s Mother’s Day next week and I’ve always struggled to find granny cards or gifts. Plenty of Nan, nanny, Grandma etc but granny seems very limited.

does no one use granny anymore?

went into the card factory today and found one single card with grannie on it - would rather granny but hey ho and one single gift had granny on it but plenty of Grandma available.

anyone else have this struggle?

seems trivial but it just annoys me. Same with Christmas and birthdays. I never had a prob finding a ‘granny & grandad’ Christmas card but granny on its own is hard. Sadly my grandad is no longer with us.

probably a pointless post just a little annoyed at the lack of ‘granny’ around!

One was Gran and the other Granny. I don't think it's that uncommon??? Where I grew up everyone seemed to say Granny

BridieConvert · 12/03/2023 18:54

Granny, she sadly passed away 8 years ago and is still firmly granny 🥰
My mum is now granny to my DDs. Have never managed to find granny cards/gifts, remember always having to compromise and get my granny something saying Gran... although that was also rare to find!
Grateful for things like moonpig now so that I can always get my mum a granny card from my DDs 🥰

aslkde · 12/03/2023 18:56

I had a gran and grandad (maternal grandparents) and a Nain and Taid (paternal grandparents).

Both Scottish grandmothers were granny

My sisters are both now grannies too

scaredofpate · 12/03/2023 19:32

Paternal- Grandma
Maternal- Omi (she was German)

DS 19 calls my mum Gram!

neighboursmustliveon · 12/03/2023 19:34

Mine were Nana and I had a great Gran. We also used their surnames to tell them apart, even gran which was odd as she was the only gran 😂

My mil is granny to my kids and my dm is nana.

My dh doesn't want me to be known as nana when the time comes as he doesn't like it but I've told him it's my choice, not his.

Mateyduck · 12/03/2023 19:36

My mil is granny . I always get a card but there is not much choice.

PilchardsonToast · 12/03/2023 20:01

I had a Nain (Welsh family) and my kids have a Gran and Grandad and a Nanny and Grandad

Tessisme · 12/03/2023 21:11

It's nearly always granny here in NI. Sometimes nanny. When you go to buy a card, all the decent 'granny' ones are gone and there's a pile of nans, grans, grandma's and grandmothers to choose from😅

Mine was granny (other one died before I was born). DC call both of theirs granny.

faffadoodledo · 12/03/2023 21:16

I had a granny, and my children called my mum granny. I expect to be Granny Faffadoodledo if I'm ever lucky enough since I'd like my name used as well

Attictroll · 12/03/2023 21:20

Nana and nanny x

ThreeRingCircus · 12/03/2023 21:24

My grandparents (sadly all gone now) were:

Granny and Grandpa
Grandma and Grandad

Survey99 · 12/03/2023 21:32

I am Scottish, west coast, and my maternal and paternal grandparents were both Gran/Granpa, my mum and dad were the same to their dgc. Only granny if they were after something.

Dh's family were from the borders and used gran or nana and papa. I never liked nana and papa, probably just because i never heard of anywhere else and seemed strange almost babyish to me when said by an adult. Nana always reminded me of the dog nana in peter pan!

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 12/03/2023 21:32

I only had one and she was nanny. My boys have one and she is Grans with an S.

WhisperingAutistic · 12/03/2023 21:43

Mine were Nan and Grandma
My kids call theirs Nannan. They only have one as the other died before they were born.

JimBob61 · 12/03/2023 22:24

Mine was Grandma
My mum is nanny
I'm nonna

SnottyLottie · 12/03/2023 22:33

I only knew my paternal grandmother and I called her Grandma. She was Scottish but had lived in England since the 1950s.

Weirdly I only refer to my maternal grandparents as “my mum’s mum/dad” or “your mum/dad” which makes me sad for my mum 😞

My kids’ grandmothers are grandma (maternal) and nana (paternal). My mum is a snob and says nana is common 🤣 Their grandfathers are “grandad” followed by their first name but the kids also call them “grandma’s grandad” and “nana’s grandad” or my personal favourite “the grandad that lives at nana’s/grandma’s house” 😂

evilharpy · 12/03/2023 22:40

Both of mine died long before I was born so I never had a name for them.

My daughter calls my mum Nana, and my husband's mum Grandma.

RampantIvy · 12/03/2023 22:42

My paternal grandmother was granny (London), my maternal grandmother was Oma (she was German)

Johnisafckface · 12/03/2023 22:43

I didn’t know many people during my times that called ther grandmother granny. We used grandma and my DD called my mother Mema (we are American)

Zuffe · 12/03/2023 22:48

One died in 1928 and the other in 1976.
Their husbands died in 1926 and 1945 respectively. The only one I knew was Nan.

Changingmynameyetagain · 12/03/2023 22:54

Both my Irish grandmothers were Granny, my Irish mum doesn’t like it so she goes by Grandma, my English MIL is also grandma to my children.
My DH grandmother was Gran to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

JoeMaplin · 12/03/2023 22:54

I only had one grandparent - she was Nana. I could never find Nana cards when she was around. We live in the south but my mum and Nana were from the North east, I wonder if Nana was less common in the south then?

my kids call my mum, Nanny (she was already nanny to my nephews) and my MIL Grandma. My FILMia Grandad, sadly my kids never knew my Dad.

I think id like to be Nana or Nanny.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 12/03/2023 22:55

My grandparents that I lived with were Nana and Grandad.

My other grandparents weren’t part of my life until I was an adult.

FunnysInLaJardin · 12/03/2023 22:57

I didn't meet any of my grandparents as they died before I was born, but my mum was always Grannie to the kids.
