What is going on at the BBC right now?

What with the news breaking today ( 10/03/23) that Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day and now Ian Wright is also not going to appear on the show in solidarity. They also have said that they will not air a David Attenborough (what the hell did he do/say that pushed their buttons) episode due to fears of a right-wing backlash. On top of that, Fiona Bruce has said that Stanley Johnson 'only' broke his wife's nose once (I mean just how many times is too many, I ask ye).

What the hell is going on at the BBC right now????

Sources:
David Attenborough being cancelled
Gary Lineker stepping back from MotD
Ian Wright standing by Gary
Fiona Bruce story

Just wondering if anyone can make sense of what is going on in the BBC at the moment.

@GPTec1 Of course the flaw in your argument is that all of this is happening under the most right wing Government we ve ever had.

Did you just copy that ^ out of The Guardian?
Obviously you don't remember Maggie Thatcher?

I don't know what part of Priti Pate's lobbying you refer to. If she was lobbying then that's her right if she doesn't agree. Do you think MPs should be 'sheeple ?'

I remember Thatcher very well. I’d take her over this lot any day of the week. She must be spinning in her grave at this lot of corrupt, lying bastards. At least she didn’t kick everyone with a hint of integrity out of her cabinet.

She also didn't have any women in her cabinet.

Fiona Bruce - her comment was badly worded but it was live, not scripted and I think she was trying to clarify what had happened rather than pass a value judgement. It wasn't good but It seems a bit harsh to 'kill the witch' over a one off, live remark. Has she clarified what she said at all? I highly doubt she would have intended to minimise male violence. I also think, given it was a live show, that it was more likely to be her getting it wrong rather than a command from on high from the Beeb management to minimise male violence.

binned off Question Time because she’s always at it. Her husband earns 4m a year advertising for the government.

@GPTec1 Stephen Dorrell, Ken Clark, Heseltine, most moderate MPs are not even in the party now, kicked out after Brexit.

They were Europhiles so it's not surprising they found themselves out-of-step with the government of the time. None were 'kicked out' as you have stated.

Heseltine stood down because he couldn't work with Maggie. If fact he seemed to have problems working with any women)

Ken Clark lost the Whip in 2019 by voting against the government on a no-deal Brexit. (IMO we'd have been better off with a No-deal Brexit, but that ship has sailed)

Stephen Dorrell stood down to join Change UK, a party made up of disgruntled MPs from all parties (including Luciana Berger (Lab) MP for West Liverpool who left the Labour Party due to antisemitism.

Change UK went nowhere fast

If you don't like the BBC, just don't pay for it or watch it anymore. Many other methods of obtaining news and entertainment are available. Alongside other sources, I quite like Al Jazeera for news - provides a different perspective which I think can be very beneficial.

if you can receive a signal you must have a tv license by law. So that’s not a viable option.

You only need a TV Licence to watch live TV.

‘Live’ TV means watching at the time of broadcast. Inc. Al Jazeera.

I don’t fancy being limited to Netflix or Amazon

All too left of Centre for the ERG/Ukip run Tory party.

Dominic Grieve, David Gaulk etc people who would have fitted in well with any Tory Govt pre 2016, gone.

Even now, to be in Sunaks cabinet or even a Con MP, you have to renounce your remain beliefs or as you would say become a "sheeple"

Does anyone know if you can listen to radio 4 ( or catch up radio) without a tv licence ?

I'm finally thinking of cancelling my licence too.
Never look at their news now and I've been bothered by unbalanced reporting on lots of issues

Novella4 · 12/03/2023 18:04

@VenAqui
Yes I stopped watching Question Time when Fiona Bruce took over though it hadn't been as good for a while before that

It has come to something when I don't even look at the BBC for breaking news .

No, you don’t need one.

Novella4 · 12/03/2023 18:09

Thanks .
Good to know

You can listen to the radio (and radio catch up) without a TV license but you can’t have a television or any tv receiving equipment in your home. You can watch catch up for ITV and channel 4 (via laptop etc) but you can’t watch iplayer or any live tv even on a laptop or phone.

Piggywaspushed · 12/03/2023 18:19

You can if it isn't plugged in. Loophole known to all students...

VenAqui · 12/03/2023 18:20

@dimorphism Gary Lineker has helped refugees by taking two into his home and supporting them still today.

VenAqui · 12/03/2023 18:22

@dimorphism and actually, why the f should he build a centre? Just treat them like the human beings they are and treat them properly.

Are you sure about that ?
I'm sure lots of people have tvs but no bbc - ie all streaming

Unless just for Amazon, Netflix, so no areal connected.

I’m not 100% sure actually. It’s been a few years since I checked the rules.

License page says so long as you are not watching (or recording) any live TV “on any channel on any TV service (like Sky, Virgin Media and Freeview) or watching live on streaming services (like ITVX, All 4, YouTube and Amazon Prime Video) or using BBC iPlayer”.

It’s quite easy to slip up!

VenAqui · 12/03/2023 18:39

People are confusing the license fee with just allowing them to watch the bbc.

I don’t have a tv or an aerial but I can still unwittingly find myself watching live TV. You do have to be careful.

Exactly. It’s not quite as simple as a saying you don’t watch the beeb is it?

I think they’re correct.

It certainly used to be the case when I first ditched my TV but that was about 20 years ago and obviously things may have changed since then! 😁
