What is going on at the BBC right now?

What with the news breaking today ( 10/03/23) that Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day and now Ian Wright is also not going to appear on the show in solidarity. They also have said that they will not air a David Attenborough (what the hell did he do/say that pushed their buttons) episode due to fears of a right-wing backlash. On top of that, Fiona Bruce has said that Stanley Johnson 'only' broke his wife's nose once (I mean just how many times is too many, I ask ye).

What the hell is going on at the BBC right now????

Sources:
David Attenborough being cancelled
Gary Lineker stepping back from MotD
Ian Wright standing by Gary
Fiona Bruce story

Just wondering if anyone can make sense of what is going on in the BBC at the moment.

I'm all for stopping the boats but i'd prefer measures that will work, not bones thrown to right wingers.

Hmm at last part, but such as?

Moonicorn · 11/03/2023 20:55

And like I said before there is no way of slowing or controlling this stream of immigration bar stopping the boats.

  1. Anyone who turns up on British soil can apply for asylum
  2. The boats are their only route here

It’s completely self explanatory and I’m not sure what some people aren’t getting?

Moonicorn · 11/03/2023 20:49

Right wingers 🙄 I mean, does ‘right wing’ mean anything any more bar ‘disagreeing in any form with an accepted leftist view’?

How will these new laws reduce migration into the UK

Well it says on the tin, because people arriving in the boats won’t be allowed to stay here permanently.

Left, Right and centre are all acknowledged terms in politics, its not controversial.

Parties that tend to be toward the centre, usually do better here in the UK, the British public, generally speaking aren't particularly right wing, hence UKiP did so badly.

Please explain where people who come here will be held and where they will be deported too?
How many people have been sent to Rwanda? Braverman's bill will almost certainly fall foul of several international treaties we ve signed up too, if so, will never become law.

I'm not the Home Sec !

But it seems to me that unless you address the causes why people leave their home countries, then we will never stop people wanting to come to Europe and hence the UK.

Of course the British aren’t ‘right wing’. I don’t even see the Tories as being ‘right wing’. They bear no hallmarks of it beyond this immigration squabble. The rest of their policies over the years have been centre or even left.

Braverman’s bill won’t work; but Sunak’s plan to throw money at the French might. Personally I want to see the ‘international law’ challenged as its deeply disproportionate to the U.K. in its impact.

The cause is unchallenged dictatorship. The Afghan army, despite years of training by the British and Americans, and state of the art equipment funded by off, ran off into the night and abandoned their duty.

Ok but it’s a bit problematic because I keep hearing this is terrible we can’t do this

But no other way to resolve the issue. Not from posters nor from Starmer

It makes me think there isn’t another way. If there was Labour / left would be telling us all about it.

As for fixing countries I think that task is too huge. Climate change adds worsening pressures and some countries could have endless money added but still be unstable. We’re struggling somewhat here for a start. Many countries are.

Dymaxion · 11/03/2023 21:04

People have always migrated to areas where they think they can have a better life.

Like UK citizens moving to Spain, Portugal and France ?

SerendipityJane · 11/03/2023 21:09

Personally I want to see the ‘international law’ challenged as its deeply disproportionate to the U.K. in its impact.

I'm trying to remember other countries in history that challenged (as opposed to negotiated a change) international law, Maybe you could find some examples to point the way from history ?

Why do I need to? This is a separate event.

I don't think this Government is concerned with reducing migration into the UK per se ?
If you are talking about the small boat issue specifically, three word slogan at the ready, perhaps you should be asking them how it started ? it only really started to be an issue a few short years ago and has increased massively under their watch.

JoonT · 11/03/2023 21:22

I am pretty close to giving up my TV. 90% of the stuff is now woke, box-ticking garbage. In fact, the vast majority of TV is unwatchable. I can pretty much make do with podcasts, YouTube, video games and books.

There is definitely a link between my mental health and screen time. I notice it again and again. Right now, I’m reading a Dickens novel and loving it. If I spend an evening reading a chapter of David Copperfield or P G Wodehouse while laying in the bath, I feel happy and relaxed. If I spend it arguing on social media or watching TV I usually feel irritable and low.

HappyHolidai · 11/03/2023 21:46

@JoonT - you need to watch different stuff on TV! 😀

Death in Paradise, Bake-off, Rick Stein's long weekends... All will make you feel better. 🎂

Of course there is, whats the point in window dressing policies that wont work?
but "attempting" to send back the most vulnerable and exploited isn't the way to do it.
How is a plan that will lead to years of legal argument and struggle with internal law going to help?
Its BS, done to be seen to be doing "something"

Giorgio Meloni in Italy is proposing that the EU stop rescuing migrants in trouble in the Med, would that be Harsh enough for you?

As i said earlier, i don't have a problem with deporting economic migrants to a safe country (Rwanda isn't that)

Starmer has said that breaking the criminal gangs model with a x border police agency, a returns agreement with EU/others and speeding up processing, so i don't know why you are saying Labour haven't come up with solutions?

Even Pritti Patel is set to challenge SB policies on children and trafficked women.

Cutting Foreign Aid is hardly improving the lot of developing countries & with supply chain issues with China, why not using these countries to fill the gap? couldn't that be looked at in some cases.

MarshaBradyo · 12/03/2023 07:25

so i don't know why you are saying Labour haven't come up with solutions?

From below my question

Has Starmer not countered with anything?

Reply from a couple of posters..

He’s not in Government. There’s no election in sight. Why should he?

Dymaxion · 12/03/2023 07:34

I did wonder if a campaign in Albania to try and stop people paying people smugglers thousands would help ? Advertise actual jobs in industries that need staff, offer visas and then people only need flight money ?

Did you read my post?

I ve given you 3 things Labour has suggested, suggest you scroll back.

Do you support Giorgio Meloni's idea that the EU should no longer rescue migrant boats?

I was answering the where did I get the idea question

Italy was a tragedy. The smugglers threw children and babies overboard to lighten the boat. I don’t agree with his views but it confirmed to me how treacherous and barbaric the small boat set up is.

I’m for safe routes but I don’t think they will stop boats alone so for me is it that tragedy, and others and burgeoning trafficking or something else to stop it.

I’m less convinced than others that it won’t take more. Maybe because I know how much it took for Aus. That’s an observation rather than a recommendation.

SerendipityJane · 12/03/2023 09:21

Well seems they knew their history.

SerendipityJane · 12/03/2023 09:24

The "War on people smugglers" as this initiative isn't called will have exactly the same success as the "War on Drugs". Fuck all difference on the street, just a lot of even richer drug dealers than last year. To such an extent that the only people who want it are the dealers themselves. And they can afford to pay politicians to ensure the law makes their trade very profitable.

MarshaBradyo · 12/03/2023 09:25

It was truly horrendous.

GPTec1 · 12/03/2023 09:34

Giorgia Meloni is female, Italy's new right wing PM, though i did spell her name incorrectly.

This is the issue with harsh measures, people will suffer, it is estimated over 20,000 people have drowned trying to cross the Med, if thats not extreme enough, i don't know what is.

It should also be remembered that the UK bombing Libya and creating a failed state is one reason why it has become such a draw for criminal gangs to use as a base to get into Europe.
Not too mention the source of the Manchester Arena bombing.

SerendipityJane · 12/03/2023 09:38

Generally, in Italian, feminine names end in "a" and masculine "o" or "i". Not a universal, but it does make Giorgio and Giorgia quite different.

Some foreign tongues have a built in immunity to this pronoun bollocks.

GB News attempted their own version of MOTD last new. It rather gives the lie to anyone who thinks 'any one with half a brain' can comment on and analyse football...

Scott Benton MP thinks the version on BBC last night was better because he could 'get down the pub for last orders' and it 'showed all the goals'. Ermm, Scott, lovely, as you know as a regular viewer, MOTD always sows all the goals...
