What is going on at the BBC right now?

What with the news breaking today ( 10/03/23) that Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day and now Ian Wright is also not going to appear on the show in solidarity. They also have said that they will not air a David Attenborough (what the hell did he do/say that pushed their buttons) episode due to fears of a right-wing backlash. On top of that, Fiona Bruce has said that Stanley Johnson 'only' broke his wife's nose once (I mean just how many times is too many, I ask ye).

What the hell is going on at the BBC right now????

Sources:
David Attenborough being cancelled
Gary Lineker stepping back from MotD
Ian Wright standing by Gary
Fiona Bruce story

Just wondering if anyone can make sense of what is going on in the BBC at the moment.

Has Starmer not countered with anything?

He’s not in Government. There’s no election in sight. Why should he?

Fine by me if not. People might they’re soft on it. Up to Labour.

Notonthestairs · 11/03/2023 16:04

It's not lost on me that you want the message to be Labour is soft on asylum seekers which why you keep repeating it over and over.
Better that than explain how the policy will actually work & cost in practice.

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/03/2023 16:05

MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2023 15:57

If they can’t counter and people assume they’re soft on the issue it’s their call, but public pressure is for it to be addressed

Public pressure is on the government to sort it now. Instead, they're just going to waste more money on Asylum hotels, lining their mates pockets and funding expensive culture wars. All while the numbers grow and grow and the problems worsen.

Er scroll back I answered your questions

Someone else brought up Labour appearing that way first so must be an issue for them 🤷‍♂️

Notonthestairs · 11/03/2023 16:09

So £2 billion? That's how much the Government have confirmed it will cost?

Or maybe they are scared to reveal they want an 'open door policy' a la Tony Blair?

Notonthestairs · 11/03/2023 16:14

17,000 asylum applications in 2010.
Where did it all go wrong?

No that’s how much it is now. The radio commentary on it was it more than pays for itself over time

Nobody will explain why we use hotels and the French, Italians Greeks etc use tents

I remember the horror from some folk that they'd used disused military bases. I mean so what. A roof over your head, food and heating is surely an upgrade from a tent in Calais.

Do you really need someone to explain that the climate of the UK is somewhat different to that of the Mediterranean coast? Just look out of the window sweetie.

Notaflippinclue · 11/03/2023 16:31

Calais is the same as London 7 degrees at the minute

Yes and you can't really blame them for trying when they are in a tent and they could be in a hotel in the UK

OOH as another poster says why don't France have to offer the same type of accommodation

MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2023 16:39

The conditions in Calais sound horrendous. I don’t get the weather comment of course there have freezing conditions too.

Notaflippinclue · 11/03/2023 16:41

It's just a question- do the French and Greeks etc give them free food, free healthcare & spending money etc - remember it's just a question

I am assuming that the law on Asylum Claims is the same all over Europe, so it seems odd that the number of approved claims for asylum for Albanians is 53% in UK yet 37% in France......

Why on earth would you think that?

Are speed limits the same across Europe?

Personally, i think the vast majority from Albania directly ( not from a conflict zone) should be returned, its a country seeking join the EU and is no longer at war, in fact DD is off there on hols soon, friends went last year and said it was a great place to visit.

What benefits do refugees get in France?

As an asylum seeker, you are entitled to benefit from social rights all your procedure long. These social rights are : health insurance (allows you to access medical care), accommodation (housing), monthly allowance (financial assistance each month), and bank account (called Livret A)

Vast majority in Calais have not claimed refugee status in France.

Agree.

What I don't understand is why this Tory government can't use existing legistlation to return those not entitled to be in the UK.Confused It worked in the past. The numbers being sent home are way lower now than they have been. New legistlation isn't needed.

This current government are really shit at the job.Angry

Do we still have return agreements?

MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2023 17:06

Those that want to return people to Albania do you mean trafficked women?

Of all the positive decisions on adult Albanians’ asylum applications in the year ending 30 June 2022, 86% were for women.

Many Albanian asylum applicants are thought to be victims of trafficking.

It seems we are following the law (not sure if international) but I assume people would just turn these back without hearing claim?

SinnerBoy · 11/03/2023 17:07

Notonthestairs · Today 15:25

Ok, an efficient well run asylum system and safe routes isnt the answer. Instead we build detention centres, lock people up and then fly out every asylum applicant without ever assessing their application.

Don't joke! Suella may be reading...

Notonthestairs · 11/03/2023 17:31

That's interesting and worrying about Albanian women - are they largely arriving by boat?
I found a recent BBC article -

"In 2022, 85% of Albanians who arrived by small boats submitted asylum applications.
Only 68 of them (0.7%) have received an initial decision and none were granted refugee status or another type of leave to remain.
In general, 53% of claims by Albanians are accepted. Most are by women and children.
The National Crime Agency (NCA) has said some Albanian migrants falsely claim to be victims of trafficking, using standard letters to apply for help.
In 2022, 13% of Albanians - 1,719 people - who arrived in small boats were referred to the National Referral Mechanism for modern slavery. That's a higher number than for any other country."

Can the modern slavery legislation apply even if the person hasn't applied for asylum? I wonder if that might be one method to offer protection to vulnerable women.

MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2023 17:53

I’m not sure about Albanian women but men generally leave the hotels after arriving, hence not getting claims processed.

How would people deal with Albanian men when they arrive? Do they stay somewhere before being taken back?

Re not stopping in next article I know how much it took for Aus to stop the boats and it’s a lot
