I feel upset just thinking about how horrible the whole process was. Hugs to you Fladdermus.

Notonthestairs · 13/03/2023 16:14

"Use this apce to tell us why your behaviour upsets other people or why you get upset about things. Tell us how this happens."

My daughter would not be able to answer this question. I dont even know where she would start with it. Social and communication disabilities includes struggling to interpret others reactions! And (in some instances) struggling to understand your own!
But yes its designed to trip people up.

I suspect the majority of people have no idea about how the systems treat disabled people - nor do they want to be informed.

I wish FB would step down from Question Time as well. She’s a very ineffective and quite ignorant chair.

The thing is... there have been some really good Chairs on QT, it used to be my thing to watch, but they bring on the likes of Nigel Farage over 38 times compared to say, Caroline Lucas, 12 times... and I couldn't cope with it at all.

Flowers for those who had to go through that dehumanising process.

Speaking of Question Time, that Jenrick bloke is a patronising wazzock isn't he.

Sorry, I shouldn't have fed it but it makes me so cross.

For anyone who is genuinely interested and not just looking to upset people, the exact wording:

Q17 Behaving appropriately with other people

This section looks at whether your behaviour upsets other people.

Please tick this box if your behaviour does not upset other people.

How often do you behave in a way which upsets other people? Everyday, often, or occasionally. Fore example, this might be because you are aggressive or act in an unusual way.

Use this apce to tell us why your behaviour upsets other people or why you get upset about things. Tell us how this happens.

How is someone with autism supposed to answer that? Do they think we knowingly go around pissing people off and making them hate us? I came to the conclusion that it was a trick question to find out if you really had a communication disability (genuinely that's what I thought). So I answered, 'How do you expect me to answer this? If I knew the answer to this I'd do something about it. It's precisely because I don't that I got an autism diagnosis'. Seemed to do the trick so maybe I was right in my analysis.

I find I upset people sometimes by pointing out the truth. For example that there is no such thing as an illegal asylum seeker is deeply upsetting to some people. I have no idea if I was answering that question whether I should therefore say frequently, because surely that there upset is entirely on them and not me?

jgw1 · 13/03/2023 18:02

Fladdermus · 13/03/2023 15:15

It's also quite telling that the question is about how my behaviour affects others but there's no question at all about how others behaviour affects me. Any failure in that social interaction is on seen as being on me.

I think you make a very wise point

Tobias Ellwood(Tory MP) calls for the govt to provide a "viable alternative for asylum seekers to be able to apply for asylum safely here in the UK... France & Germany actually take more asylum seekers than us, but there needs to be a collective effort"

#KayBurley #BBCBreakfast

On the whole in general I've always rated Tobias Ellwood. He was the candidate I was hoping would get in. But knew he wouldn't because he's too centric for the current Tory government.

itsgettingweird · 13/03/2023 18:14

IClaudine · 13/03/2023 10:17

Some of it seems reasonable, @Blossomtoes , but I worry about what is not being mentioned.

Scrapping the work capability assessment for example. That is a good thing, but what will replace it? Who will decide whether a disabled person is fit enough to work and how will they decide that.

Yes I must admit I read that thinking that's good to many points.

  • scrapping the arrears childcare and paying in advance
  • scrapping the work capability assessment

All sounds good. But it's what will replace it that immediately sprang to mind. Alongside the fact that having a partner in work doesn't excuse the other person from attending training and skills sessions. This will be a barrier for many without childcare so it solves one issue but another equal issue is created.

itsgettingweird · 13/03/2023 18:17

I admit that for personal reasons I get a bit anxious when they start fiddling about with the disability benefits system. So possibly I am too suspicious

I get that. My ds is disabled. My concern is more they'll tighten the thread hold for claiming PIP so fundamentally scrap the capability assessments but financially cause difficulties elsewhere.

I heard him talking about nuclear power and the plan to buy modular nuclear generator thingies. He sounded very sensible, very knowlegeable and I was quite impressed and thought they do have some who aren't complete loons. The DH piped up and said it all sounded great, shame it was complete and utter bollocks. DH is a professor of nuclear chemistry. So I revised my opinion to him being just another tory bullshitter, just a bit better at bullshitting than some of the others.

Been catching up on this thread and I didn't understand this bit (sorry to be dim)

"And OFSTED office staff. No one mentions this funnily.

They are striking Mon - Weds for something like 10 weeks.

A result of this is Ofsted now have them making loads of calls to hapless schools on Friday saying 'see you on Monday'. This did not used to be allowed."

Can you elaborate @Piggywaspushed please?

I get it.

My ds has hereditary spastic paraplegia and is also autistic.

His behaviour around others is nominally fine and you'd not think anything of it. However......

If asked an opinion on a topic he doesn't understand he will often just look at you and walk away Grin

Of course - in his job this doesn't happen as he knows the topic being discussed. He can monologue to military generals around the world about the software he designs - and does.

He couldn't go into a shop and deal with buying an item successfully because if it isn't where it should be or that item isn't available he literally cannot manage to get an alternative - and would probably end up buying something to totally irrelevant 🫣🤣

He also cannot handle conflict. If someone is acting in a way that ,aka him feel threatened he goes in to fight mode and will tell them to fuck off. This makes him vulnerable.

So when we complete Pip forms we have to say he can manage in an environment that's familiar with people he knows and trusts and know how to support him. But he cannot cope unsupported in an environment outside of this.

itsgettingweird · 13/03/2023 18:31

But yes you are right fladder that it's more about how others behaviours affect him rather than his them. If he looks and walks away he'll only need support if that person decides to judge his behaviour rather than accept him for who he is and understand he can't chat shite about the weather Grin

Nearly all his problems stem from when others don't understand how to support him.

Ofsted previously were not allowed to call on a Friday to announce an inspection on a Monday. A change was announced last week. This will give school teachers everywhere some horrible weekends. The theory is that admin staff make 'the call' and will be working on Fridays.

Sorry, not very clear still!

Ofsted also originally announced intention to inspect on strike days! They had to climb down....

Suella Braverman on refugees: "If people are truly in need of protection, they will receive protection in Rwanda...Rwanda is a dynamic country with a thriving economy. I've enjoyed visiting myself twice before and I look forward to visiting again."

twitter.com/lewis_goodall/status/1635340081128169473?s=46&t=Uw4lJNwxFZFnX0Xs3doHYg

Yes I'm sure asylum seekers will be treated exactly the same as how the Rwandan government treated Braverman when she visited on official business.

tobee · 13/03/2023 18:55

Thanks @Piggywaspushed, that makes sense.

itsgettingweird · 13/03/2023 18:55

Well quite noton. It's just more words and use of language with a hope that the country can't critically think for the, selves.

BewareTheLibrarians · 13/03/2023 19:02

Ian Dunt on Twitter is doing the Lord’s work by reporting on the illegal Migration Bill (capitalization my own) in parliament now.

Braverman’s decrying anyone with concerns as “naive do-gooders” and “out of touch lefties” which is making me miss the days when politicians were staid and boring, instead of rage-fueled hate machines. Anyway. Here’s a pretty big concern about the bill that shows the sheer incompetence and nonsense that it is:

Cooper now nailing it. What happens to the people who cannot be returned?

There are three options. The first is a Rwanda style policy, but that is not working and anyway can only take 200, when we're talking about thousands. There's a returns agreement to France, but that doesn't exist either.

The third option is return to their home country without processing, but that is only possible for the EU countries plus Norway etc and Albania. For everywhere else, it's illegal and impossible.

This is the main issue with the bill. It does nothing to stop people coming, but it does a lot to stop them leaving.

mobile.twitter.com/IanDunt/status/1635351467921117185

And if they can’t leave, the govt has to “support” them in housing and allowance forever. Financially nonsensical and condemning people to an effectively stateless half-life. I’ve run out of adjectives. It’s just really really shit.

IClaudine · 13/03/2023 19:05

It is utterly shameful. Braverman is a moral abyss.

Added to which she seems not to have had the use of the Cabinet brain cell lately. This is so ridiculously awful it’s making me wonder if the civil servants have deliberately stitched her up.

Ha. The same as the “France is a safe country” argument. Yes it is for you Steve, with your hire car and a villa on the Dordogne, not so much when you’re living in a tent camp that the police keep destroying you massive Herbert.

I’m starting to think Braverman isn’t a real human, just an AI amalgamation of the current worst takes on Twitter.
