Thread 6 - TalkExiles: "Yup, still round."

Continuation of previous threads (thread 5).

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Cyan that sounds absolutely bloody miserable.

I am told my pic is in fact cherry plum, a naturalised southern European arrival. Blackthorn will be another week or so. Male yew trees are in full pollen flow, though, as well as hazel. I'd never noticed yew pollen before.

it doesn’t feel like a priority for the NHS right now.

That may be so, but it's a priority for you.

It’s true, but I feel I’ve darkened their doors too much recently with various ailments. My body seems to be falling apart, possibly in part due to stress. I might see if I can find out where I am in the ENT queue at least.

Oh, Cyan, that sounds utterly miserable. I don't know how old you are, but one of my friends, who used to be severely allergic to various pollens, especially horse chestnut, seems to have grown out of it since hitting 40. I don't know if that's a common thing, but I'm going to cross my fingers it'll happen for you, too.

CyanCrystalViolet

Blimey, that's horrendous for you. I hope that you can find something to help properly.

Thanks @SqueakyDinosaur. I’m in my 30s, hopefully I’ll grow out of it. My dad had allergic rhinitis most of his life as well as various other autoimmune problems, I seem to be inheriting all of his ailments. My brother also has it and suffers with his ears.

In my case, the issues started in my mid-50s but it's good to know it can happen the other way round.

Blimey, I didn’t think it would get such a reaction. I’ve just been quietly putting up with it because it’s not life-threatening and hoping it will one day go away, but this has made me think I probably should try to get it sorted. At the very least I think I need some better antihistamines.

Report
Tricyrtis2022 · 08/03/2023 11:25

It might not be life-threatening, but it sounds like something that seriously impacts on your quality of life. If you could find the right treatment, that could make a huge difference to your day to day living.

You really should press for it, cyan. It sounds bloody awful, and like something more than capable of being managed much better.

CyanCrystalViolet That sounds dreadful, I'm so sorry, and hope you are able to get relief somehow. Hazel seems likelier to be a trigger at the moment that blackthorn - it's insect pollinated so doesn't shed many grains, whereas Hazel is wind pollinated - my palynologist friend use to joke that she'd concluded every species of plant produced distinctive identifiable pollen grains and Hazel pollen, there was always so much of it in every sample she looked at. Male gametes have to spread themselves.

Willow gets me, a few weeks after the Hazel peak, but it's just irritating, not crippling like yours.

This is weird. I've posted on this thread a few times and I've checked that it's showing (on the header) as a thread I'm watching, but on my phone when I look at the "I'm on" and"I'm watching" lists, it isn't showing up. I have to keep going back to Kuc's link on the previous thread to find it.

Hello new thread! Thanks Kuc for making it. I am liking the new Gardners' Question Time theme this time around.

Had a man in yesterday and today (ooh err missus). He was a proper time served joiner, made me new shelves and a cupboard from scratch, literally cut every bit of wood and put it all together, I was well impressed. Best of all, not only did he do an amazing job, he was half the price of the other cowboys who gave me a quote. Should wait till I've painted them all to match the walls before posting pics but I am so giddy with happiness at my new shelves, I can't.

That looks ace @Dotellhimpike!

The thread is showing for me in ‘I’m on’ now. The ‘add image’ section has changed so I guess they were doing an update which might’ve caused the glitch.

@duc748 I think I’m possibly the thread baby Halo

I very much enjoyed this piece of ‘thrift store art’ I came across recently and thought I would share the joy

Cyan, do have a word with your GP. The NHS isn't great with allergies but that sort of constant problem is miserable to live with so it is worth seeing if they can help.

Pike, lovely joinery - and better photographed unpainted to se can see the details.

Unlike the thrift store 'art', which would look much better after a dozen coats of thick emulsion.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 08/03/2023 13:41

Sympathy and encouragement to use the NHS from me too, Cyan.

And those are indeed very impressive shelves and cupboard, Pike.

Bert, I am envious of the Cherry Plum. I once bought what I think must have been CP fruit at a National Trust garden. I was told they were 'wild plums'. The jam I made from them was the best I've ever had, though as they are small, there were lots of stones.

That looks very presentable, Pike. How are you settling in?
