What’s your gut reaction to a 38 year old being pregnant?

Do you consider 38 old to be having a baby? Just interested in how people honestly feel hearing it as obviously most people would be polite in person but I’m not sure if secretly they’d think it was quite old to be having a baby?

probably overthinking but hey…

What would your gut reaction to a 60yr old being pregnant compared to a 38yr old? You're relatively young in comparison. Please don't age yourself with nonsense criticism.

Enjoy your pregnancy. I'm 37 and would love a 4th, but hubby snipped the willy.

Might go to a sperm bank.

Sorry, didn’t mean to quote previous post 🤪

I think in certain cultures 38 may
still be seen as old to be pregnant but even then most cultures now accept that in this day and age women also have careers and may not venture into having a family until they are well into their 30s, I had my eldest daughter at 30 and had my youngest daughter 10 months ago when I was 40! Women over 35 however are considered at high risk as the pregnancy can face more challenges but I honestly believe that can happen at any age any time so in answer to your question I wouldn’t even flinch at hearing someone is pregnant at the age of 38! Good luck!

I'd think "ooh cool she was the same age as me when I was pregnant two years ago ,"
It's a good age but also average

SharonEllis · 01/03/2023 17:47

I would be delighted for them same as anyone else! My Mum was 38 when she had me. I had my first at 37 & 2nd at 39. Most of my friends had kids in mid to late 30s. I'm honestly amazed this is a question!

Mumof3girlygirls · 01/03/2023 17:47

Congratulations??? Seriously how can 38 be classed as too old ? Isn't 30s the usual age for children?

Anotherpinkginplease · 01/03/2023 17:48

My gut reaction would be that I wouldn't want to be 38 and starting again but I think it's pretty normal

LaughingCat · 01/03/2023 17:49

My gut reaction would be to say congratulations? Perfectly normal age to have a child.

Many women might have their first child in their early to mid-thirties but subsequent children come later.

If it helps, the NHS Maternity Statistics show that over 21,000 babies were born to mums over 40 last year…so I hardly think 38 is over the hill 😂. Your fertility would be starting to decline but it’s not in freefall yet.

tsmainsqueeze · 01/03/2023 17:49

Totally normal , still fairly young to me.

AncientBallerina · 01/03/2023 17:49

Sorry I haven’t read the whole thread but I and most of my friends had our second babies at that age and even third (shock horror - not) a couple of years later. It’s completely normal. Your sister has a problem- ignore her. Very unpleasant behaviour.

Scotland32 · 01/03/2023 17:49

Totally and utterly normal. I wouldn’t give it even a thought. I had a baby at 38 and so did a number of my friends. I am far more likely to raise an eyebrow if someone is pregnant before 30!

Mandyjack · 01/03/2023 17:50

38 is fairly normal now even though in medical terms it's classed as a geriatric pregnancy.
I think I'd only class it as an older person's pregnancy if the mum was 50 plus

Rollergirl999 · 01/03/2023 17:51

Had my first and only child when I was nearly 41 after lots of miscarriages. It seems quite normal these days.

Blueswirl · 01/03/2023 17:51

What's your sister's deal? Is she maybe envious? I didn't get the chance to try for a family till I was 39 so had no choice, my friend just had her 2nd aged 50 but looks and seems 10 years younger. 38 definitely isn't too old although medical professionals do call it more risky over 35, could she be worried for your health?

xJoy · 01/03/2023 17:51

a normal age to have a baby

MeinKraft · 01/03/2023 17:51

Obviously it's on the later side of average but not old enough to comment on, or even merit a thought tbh.

Fluffmum · 01/03/2023 17:51

My friend just gave birth at 43 so I think nothing of it

cantbebothered101 · 01/03/2023 17:51

After 10 years of ttc I had my first at 39, 2nd at 41 and 3rd at 43!! I wouldn’t have necessarily chosen my 40’s but now wouldn’t change it for anything. You are certainly not too old ignore your sister!

New30 · 01/03/2023 17:52

I’m 38 and on maternity leave. From the group of us at NCT I’m exactly in the middle age wise and hope to have another in a few years

Surreymamauk · 01/03/2023 17:52

Wouldn't think anything of it. I've just had my second and I'm nearly 38. X

MMUmum · 01/03/2023 17:52

I was 42, first baby in the family for 16yrs, everyone was thrilled.

Mandyjack · 01/03/2023 17:52

Pegfriedrice · 01/03/2023 09:33

She said it to me with a tone of almost disgust at the thought of someone my age having more children which made me feel a bit shit!

Does she have kids? Is she younger or older than you?

comeon2023 · 01/03/2023 17:52

Normal in my circles, I'm a solo mum by choice and know loads of women who had babies late 30s/early 40s, a few mid to late 40s. I'm hoping to have my second next year by which time I'll be 38. I'd feel happy for her as I know it can be more difficult getting pregnant after 35!

GingeAndTonic · 01/03/2023 17:53

Completely normal. I was 40 when I had my son. I was the oldest in my NCT, who were all first timers, but only just, and the youngest was probably 35. Several had a second probably between 38 and 41. Your sister’s reaction seems a bit weird, but it takes all sorts ¯\(ツ)/¯.

i wouldn’t worry. Plenty of late 30s and much older have kids.

ÉireannachÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉ · 01/03/2023 17:54

This is mumsnet lol. Practically most users here are starting their family at this age.
