To nobody’s surprise, the frantic pace of this latest game means that the last thread is full and (as far as I can see) <polishes lorgnette> we don’t yet have a successor. So, off we go with a Brunswick Lateral to

Russell Square

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 29/09/2023 09:59

Deceptively simple. Puts me in a quandary, but I’m hoping this might work:

Hounslow West

OP posts:
HazelBite · 29/09/2023 12:23

I must counter with Edgeware Road

TragicMuse · 29/09/2023 13:50

Sharp intake of breath

Well my planned move doesn't work with Edgware Rd...hmmm...

So, the Bakerloo rule means I can't go West for 2 stops, but that's countered by the Circle line anti-clockwise and it's a weekday.

This is tricky!

It's going to have to be Pimlico

LlynTegid · 29/09/2023 14:11

There are two Edgware Road stations, so not specifying them means an invalid move and we are back at Hounslow West. Fortunately the 1988 protocol means that where there are two stations part sharing a name, an exception from being in Nidd is granted.

Making a move to Hounslow East, a short move.

DuckonaBike · 01/10/2023 00:17

I’ll counter that with a long move to Cockfosters.

Stop sniggering at the back.

HazelBite · 01/10/2023 09:30

Wow!, that's allowed me to go with Arnos Grove (that's a move I've been desperate to do for years.)

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 01/10/2023 11:10

Sniggering? Who’s sniggering? This’ll wipe the grin off their face.

Battersea Power Station

OP posts:
Chat1354 · 01/10/2023 11:36

That makes it my turn I believe, since the Rule of Fuel-Related Stations introduced in the 1928 edition of the Revised New Rules of Modern Play (not to be confused with the earlier rewrites ‘1928 New Rules of Modern Play’) state that the turn of play must now reverse anticlockwise two players, not including players who are on double named stations.

I haven’t been stuck in Nidd for a week since the 1984 Weastley-Remington championship but thankfully, this being a Sunday this means I can use the bus replacement rule to get me out of Nidd directly so I shall take play safely to

Embankment

TragicMuse · 01/10/2023 13:47

Ah a fellow keen student of the 1928 edition of New Rules of Modern Play! I always enjoyed the misprint on page 35 which completely confounded the 1962 world championships and lost the Scottish team the title when they played Auldgate instead of Aldgate.

It being a Sunday I therefore move directly to Temple. And there make my observances and orisons.

HazelBite · 02/10/2023 09:47

@TragicMuse Temple is not open on a Sunday! I had better take us rather quickly to Charing Cross and hope nobody has noticed.

TragicMuse · 02/10/2023 12:42

🤫

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 02/10/2023 18:16

I have always felt that 1928 was a turning point for the game of games, one whose significance (as Mao reputedly said of the French Revolution) wouldn’t be appreciated until centuries has passed.

Let’s have fun:

Mansion House

OP posts:
TragicMuse · 04/10/2023 19:27

Ooh. Camden Road.

DuckonaBike · 04/10/2023 20:46

Interesting times ….

Highbury & Islington

TragicMuse · 08/10/2023 23:16

Rayners Lane. I think that's safe?

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 08/10/2023 23:58

Safe, and yet challenging, as it means all anti-clockwise moves are retrograde until Tuesday. I think I can manage a half-moon to

Neasden

OP posts:
Chat1354 · 09/10/2023 17:05

A half moon to Neasden on a Monday? Dear lord, that means we have the faff of rotating the entire play half a degree west, meaning the next player must forfeit their turn, which of course is me. And it’s not been long since I had to spend a whole week in Nidd! This game is starting to feel like a repeat performance of the Wesley-Charrington tournament of ‘48.

Chat1354 · 09/10/2023 17:07

And I’m damned if I know which way play now moves to, since we have the business of sub-rule 47b (revised) to contend with and that’s no small task in this situation.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 09/10/2023 18:43

Forgive me asking, Chat1354, but your mention of Wesley-Charrington in 1948 makes me wonder - was it you who won the semi-final there, dressed so chicly in Dior’s New Look and a decommissioned gas mask? Something about your play makes me think it was.

Ladbroke Grove

OP posts:
Chat1354 · 09/10/2023 18:56

Well blow me if you haven’t just identified me! Now that is quite the thing, isn’t it? Takes me back. It was the corsetry required which proved my downfall with that look in the end, never had the natural waistline for it on account of the sweet treats served at the game of games in those days but oh the cut and the fabric!

The gas mask was I think a bit of fun initiated by dear old Edgar a few months prior to that, if you’ll recall the occasion.

Can I assume you were one of the two ladies on my right once the evening shenanigans commenced?

Paddington

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 09/10/2023 22:04

Ah, Chat1354, as my dear, late friend, HM the Queen Mother, once advised me, never complain, never explain. So I can say nothing about that, ahem, challenging evening in ‘48, beyond remarking that it was standing room only on the last train out of town.

Evoking the 3 mile radius rule when considering the rail replacement bus service. I’ve just been forced to board an N20 from Camden Town to High Barnet . Having hoped to alight at Kentish Town which has now become banished by tfl and basically its own lawless and disconnected no man’s land now, I’ve been warned not to alight due to concerns around apocalyptic violence and zombies… one was forced to ride the bus of doom, plank of wood in hand until High Barnet and then double back on oneself on the northern line make no eye contact with anyone and switch at Finchley to be fair, in Finchley we have way more yutes ready to smash zombies . Currently smashing zombies, hope to make it back to Charing Cross.

HazelBite · 10/10/2023 06:12

I think we need to get back to basics here if we are ever to proceed towards a brilliant conclusion, therefore I give you Seven Sisters

LlynTegid · 10/10/2023 06:39

Temple is not closed on Sundays anymore. However, under the 1934 amendment to the 1928 rules it is valid as a move because of not being challenged within four further moves, an amendment brought about by the closure of several stations for good in 1932 and 1933. Down Street and York Road were important moves in those days.

Tottenham Hale.

DuckonaBike · 11/10/2023 19:27

Gosh it’s all been kicking off in my absence! I’m going to keep things lively with a Pennington Slide to Lewisham. It’s a daring move, I know, I think a glance at Appendix B of the New Rules will confirm that it’s quite in order.
