Since when has M&S been so good for clothes?!

After years of being dragged round M&S with my gran and swearing I'd never ever shop there..... I now own a Per Una jacket Shock

I was given a voucher for Asos for Christmas, still haven't managed to spend it and instead my last 5 purchases have all been Markies.

I prefer Next . Clothes more stylish and bigger sizes.

colouringindoors · 28/02/2023 18:35

Thermal leggings are brilliant!

Like others have said great to have different trouser lengths for the vertically challlenged.

Kids school uniform and kids shoes very good in the main, now I can't afford Clarks!

Reasonable value for money and the free online ordering and returns is excellent.

I saw this IRL the other day and thought it looked like it could come from somewhere like Mint Velvet rather than M and S. www.marksandspencer.com/pure-cotton-embroidered-puff-sleeve-blouse/p/clp60597949?prevPage=srp#intid=plpnav_pid_pg1pip35g2r1c1

I blame the op, because I had a look at M&S to see if they had ''upped their game'' or, not!

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 28/02/2023 20:15

I just bought the perfect cashmere jumper there.

RampantIvy · 28/02/2023 21:49

I'm curious where you buy your clothes @Terrribletwos given that you seem to be in the minority on this thread.

I have relied on M&S jeans for years, being both short and fat. I live in their wide leg ones at the moment - have them in black, dark and indigo. I am 5'4 on a very good day after a pilates class and agree that their short length have got longer though, I am only a fraction away from them being too long.

Love the idea of being taller after Pilates - I need more classes! I’m glad it’s not just me. I do think a short length should fit a 5,2 rather than a 5,4

Their food is not awful. That's crazy

VillanellePinkDress · 28/02/2023 22:07

Somethings really changed. Their clothes are much, much better 😍

AnneShirleysNewDress · 28/02/2023 22:10

Love Markies jeans. Got some lovely ankle grazer trousers too.

I agree.

adrianmolesmole · 01/03/2023 18:57

Thanks to this thread you've all forced me to have another look at the M&S site and select and buy a longline cashmere jumper. Thanks a bunch, people!

M&S has improved. They seem to have lots more nice basics and plainer stuff...in previous times I found everything too twee

WedonttalkaboutMaureen · 02/03/2023 12:07

if you're comparing to the 60/70s when they had the St Michael label....no comparison.

Jeez, how old are you? GrinGrinGrin most posters won't have been born never mind old enough to buy adult clothing back then. You surely can't expect retail to remain the same 60 years later Shock

theDudesmummy · 02/03/2023 12:33

I am old enough to remember the St Michael label in the 1970s (although as it was sold in Woolworths in South Africa, not M&S, which we didn't have, it was the same stuff though). It was very posh clothing for us and the quality was fantastic.

RampantIvy · 02/03/2023 12:41

I remember the St Michael label, but, quite frankly, I don't remember the quality of clothes. I was a child/teenager at the time.

Leftbutcameback · 02/03/2023 14:56

I have a couple of St Michael vintage clothes - nice quality, but the sizing was a shock 😬

BasiliskStare · 02/03/2023 14:56

@cheatingcrackers - re jeggings , for me ( but I am not hour glassed shape - yes they come up to waist & I reckon I would call them high waisted ) & no they do not fall down. ( but as I said before no belt loop ) For under £20 a pair I think they are great - I have in various colours including indigo and light denim & these can pass for actual jeans - well skinny jeans - It might be worth ordering a pair and see what you think . Am sure they would take them back . They go through the wash and the tumble dryer and come out just fine.

WilsonMilson · 02/03/2023 15:10

Oh same, I used to shop in younger trendier shops and now I find myself heading to Marks or more grown up (boring) stores. I think I’m just getting old.

cheatingcrackers · 02/03/2023 18:07

Thanks @BasiliskStare. I’m slim hipped and often have problems with leggings drooping. I’ll try them out!

Boogismyname · 02/03/2023 21:29

Was the St. Michael brand made by M&S and only available there? I remember it being about but not more than that. Together with clothes, St. Michael made toiletries and possibly foodstuffs I think. I wasn't old enough to know much more.
Was St. Michael better quality than the standard M&S brand?

Boogismyname · 02/03/2023 21:32

If M&S clothing is getting better in quality and popularity then I am genuinely happy for them because they have had made some dodgy design choices for sure.
Does anyone remember decades ago when it was on national news about their dip in profits and low quality clothes? They had to be 'rescued' by some kind of new director.

Yes, St Michael was the standard M&S brand, rather than being just one of their ranges. I remember books, homewares and, as you say, toiletries and clothes too. I think they ditched the name as they thought it sounded old-fashioned and that rebranding themselves would be a good idea.
