Since when has M&S been so good for clothes?!

After years of being dragged round M&S with my gran and swearing I'd never ever shop there..... I now own a Per Una jacket Shock

I was given a voucher for Asos for Christmas, still haven't managed to spend it and instead my last 5 purchases have all been Markies.

Their trousers are really good - every shape, cut and length imaginable, and some of their jeans are nice too. And their skinny rib long sleeved tops, and of course, the underwear!

WedonttalkaboutMaureen · 27/02/2023 23:39

Their "sculpting" jeans are fantastic.

I'm not old, I'm a young thing!

It's a gateway drug. Next, you'll be eagerly awaiting the Lakeland catalogue and it's all garden centres from then on.

You mark my words, young lady.

I only ever by M&S jeggings now. They're soooo comfy

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 28/02/2023 01:04

I love their Magic jeans. I’ve just bought three new identical pairs in case they stop making them. They are so comfortable and flattering.

BasiliskStare · 28/02/2023 01:17

@SignOnTheWindow - I love M&S Is a gateway drug to Lakeland

That said - I do have many M&S jeggings which are comfortable but you can go out in them without looking like you have pyjamas on. & not expensive. - I just wish they would do knitwear in more eg Navy blue , charcoal etc rather than Neapolitan ice cream colours or stripes where there do not to need to be stripes. Also I have 3 shirts ( I think called boyfriend shirt or something - ) £25 - I got mine for £14 in the sale and they are great.

I have been getting food the last few times I have been in so could not be bothered to go to changing rooms - are the "Mom" jeans any good - or has this been done to death & I just need to search & go and try some on. ?

pippapipps · 28/02/2023 01:18

I've always liked and bought most of my underwear in marks but never even look in the clothes section until recently because I've noticed there's a bit of a rave about marks clothes all of a sudden.
How's the sizing? I recall years ago hearing that the sizes ran big?

RestingMurderousFace · 28/02/2023 01:30

They seemed to have been ‘inspired’ by a lot of Me and Em pieces. Fabrics are flimsier and the cuts are slightly less flattering though.

Shouldbesleeping8 · 28/02/2023 01:36

The last two jumpers I've bought have gone bobbly after a few washes. Terrible quality

BasiliskStare · 28/02/2023 01:37

@pippapipps - I tend to stick to their basic things - so jeggings as above - love these - cheap as chips but wash well & honestly you can dress them up a bit or just for day to day . They used to have some brilliant loafers which I bought but sadly don't seem to have them . What I tend to avoid is the very obviously patterned dresses etc . The boyfriend shirt runs big . I would expect to be a medium and had to get a small. The jeggings - depending on fit I would say if you want looser fit and you can't decide go one up but I chose the smaller and they were fine. I'd probably go the smaller size now ( they don't have belt loops ) . I think my local M&S might disappear or just be a food outlet so I might run in & see what is around and about over the next few weeks. It's worth a look around as there are a few gems . Not sure I would go into a huge shop as I might find it overwhelming but a little one - I think there are some nice things. Now I have my size I shall be ordering jeggings as long as they make them 😊

garlictwist · 28/02/2023 01:41

Interesting.. I need some new trousers and was scouring the web yesterday looking at ASOS and H&M - nothing. Maybe it's time to move to the dark side and try M&S.

Deanefan · 28/02/2023 07:32

Need some new trousers and am very short legged will give some a try thanks

itsgettingweird · 28/02/2023 07:38

I have their

Washed and worn frequently.

Love them.

Also have a jumper and swimwear and shirts from there.

I agree the past few years they've reinvented themselves and it's my go to for decent king lasting staple wardrobe.

That’s because they are a third of the price. That’s not a surprise surely?

I am loving M&S at the moment. I’m a long time fan but I go through phases of loving everything and not being able to find anything.

I’ve had a charge card since 1989. I think it’s the last one standing

BreakfastOfWaffles · 28/02/2023 07:49

I have always been a fan of their underwear, pj's, school uniform and Good Move range. Lately they have been on a very long stint of me also liking the rest of their range - I agree they have really upped their game. Their prices are so much more reasonable than a lot of places as well.

Leftbutcameback · 28/02/2023 07:55

I’ve been buying trousers there for a long time as they do short length, but can’t anymore as the short length now seems to be for people taller than 5,4 (I’m not the only one complaining about this). It’s massively frustrating!

Leftbutcameback · 28/02/2023 07:58

its also worth looking on insta as lots of accounts are m&s staff or stylists with the new release clothes

RedRiverShore3 · 28/02/2023 08:00

I'm fairly tall and like their jeans, straight leg joggers and some trousers as they fit and wash well, I don't get tops or knitwear as they are usually too short for me, some of the shoes are good and I buy underwear, pyjama bottoms as they do a longer length and thermals from there.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/02/2023 08:07

You have to pick and choose carefully. I got a dove grey cashmere jumper with a zoggt stardust-esque coloured star on the right hand side fron M&S last year. It looks a lot more expensive and directional than M&S clothes usually are.

This year I got a very good fitted black cardie with small white star pattern on it and some high waisted, wide legged cord trousers.

Just this week I got a mid length, button through, denim shirt dress with gathered sleeves which will be a very useful work basic.

You do need to pay attention and look out for awful fabrics and mad fits though.

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2023 08:10

I buy a lot at M&S, especially online and consider myself reasonably 'on trend'.

Like - not a fashion slave, but I follow a lot of fashion content.

The thing I love, on top of them having some nice pieces is that it's pretty good quality, well fitted and they have good eco credentials.

Prices are great too - £35 for my fave jeans for example.

GoBackToTheLibraryWhereYouBelong · 28/02/2023 08:23

My 17 year old dd got a great cricket jumper there last summer that has barely been off her since. I really liked it too but agreed it would look better on her, and it does, it looks effortlessly cool

tatteddear · 28/02/2023 08:31

I've always secretly bought jumpers and the odd pair of shoes from there even when I was in my 20's. Now they have lots of stuff I fancy!

TheOGCCL · 28/02/2023 08:35

There is such a massive range of clothing in M&S. I guess something for everyone but most people do want to be looking for age appropriate pieces. So you’ll get a ditzy print three quarter length sleeve, yoked neckline fitted top, and a much more on trend oversized chambray shirt. I don’t really know who the target market is, seems to be everyone.

I like the fact they still have lots of stores and their click and collect service is fast.

cheatingcrackers · 28/02/2023 08:35

Jeggings experts - are they high waisted and do they actually stay up?

I haven’t bought clothes at M&S for a while but I’d basically rather shop there than any other high street because I can buy a nice packet of those more chocolate than biscuit biscuits at the same time.

Catspyjamas17 · 28/02/2023 08:52

Last year I found their sports stuff really good and it was much better for basics - like they used to be. Had no problem buying vest tops and shorts in different colours.
