Since when has M&S been so good for clothes?!

After years of being dragged round M&S with my gran and swearing I'd never ever shop there..... I now own a Per Una jacket Shock

I was given a voucher for Asos for Christmas, still haven't managed to spend it and instead my last 5 purchases have all been Markies.

It's because after so many high street brand closures there is literally nowhere really to buy clothes from anymore past a certain age. That's why they have become more attractive. I thought the same the other day.

I'm 32. Completely swerved away from New Look, not even liking Zara as much.

Same! Zara used to be my go-to, I'd usually like everything in there. But for the last 6 months or so I've found it to be crap. Also the quality has gone way down, the jumpers bobble so quickly.

New look and h&m are just shocking quality, I always walk in thinking maybe I'll find something today, but often walk straight out after about 30 seconds of seeing all the hideous polyester, creased outfits. I do like h&m baby clothes though!

I had never shopped at M&S until a couple of years ago. Now, I buy lots there. I love their jeggings and dresses. I think I became a convert during lockdown when it was the only shop open.

Ugh I have never ever bought anything in H&M that wasn't terrible looking! It always looks lovely on other people but not on me.

I've always bought my bras and the kids school uniforms from there

After years of not buying underwear there, I've started buying bras again. They now do bravissimo style sizes, and I've picked up 30FFs in store for a very reasonable price.

The knitwear colours are still a bit weird though.

@DarkOphelia how are the bras for support vs. Bravissimo? I am 30G and love the look of some of the M&S ones but the last time I tried them (ages ago) they had zero support. I rate Bravissimo highly though.

My new jeans are Autograph, I get loads of compliments on them and the material is so soft and comfortable.

Could I ask you to link to the Autograph jeans please?

sofapaddling · 27/02/2023 21:17

i work there and even i'm impressed with the clothes! (previously wouldn't have bought anything, even with the discount!) i am fairly youngish (ha!) at 35

Turtletotem · 27/02/2023 21:19

OP are you from the east coast?
I've lived in various places across the country and now east coast and locals say Markies I never heard it before I lived here.

I mentioned this a few weeks back but they have been amazing the past few months for petite clothes in particular petite midi dresses which are virtually impossible to find. I'm 4"11 and have gotten some lovely dresses there and zero alterations needed

fionaapple · 27/02/2023 21:20

I'm 23 and not embarrassed to admit I have been a fan of their clothes for years😁the sales are so good too. I love finding 'vintage' M&S jeans in charity shops. I even have a pair of jeans from Bonmarche as they seem to be the only shop that cater for really short legs. I do feel slightly embarrassed going into Bonmarche but I don't think I ever look like I dress old for my age (apart from probably at work). Not like I'm going to see anyone I know in there anyway.

maddiemookins16mum · 27/02/2023 21:21

I started shopping at M and S in my mid 30s, I went off Etam (showing my age here) and Dorothy Perkins. I’m 60 next year.

Lottapianos · 27/02/2023 21:22

M&S have always had some decent bits among the horror. They are particularly strong at the moment. I love that they are one of the few high street shops that recognise that women come in DIFFERENT HEIGHTS and make their trousers in a range of leg lengths. FFS, get with the program, other clothing retailers!

I'm 4'11 too so will have a look😅any advice on where you find things that fit your leg length? I have to go for a cropped jean in most 'cool' shops that end up just being normal length or even slightly too long on me. I'm around a 27 inch leg but a size 12 so can't shop in the kids section like I could pre-lockdown😫

SparkyBlue · 27/02/2023 21:25

@fionaapple I've given up on leg lengths as I just won't find anything that fits me unfortunately

ScreamingTree · 27/02/2023 21:26

I had this conversation with friends recently. We've all found ourselves raving about M&S clothes recently and couldn't decide if it's got more stylish or we're just getting old (late 30s/early 40s). We decided it's definitely the former. I've got the most gorgous shirt dress and blouse in the last few weeks.

Have you tried Bonmarche?😬😬

Since when has M&S been so good for clothes?!

Since Mumsnet schooled them about some of their wackier designs.

Pink dress, anyone?

YukoandHiro · 27/02/2023 21:36

M&S jeans are good - excellent range of fits

familyissues12345 · 27/02/2023 21:38

I find I either love loads of things in M&S or nothing at all

bellocchild · 27/02/2023 21:40

Marks are a lot better value than equivalent mid-range brands.

butterfliedtwo · 27/02/2023 21:40

I get all my basics and workout clothes from there, and I don't even live in the UK anymore. I'm so glad they ship internationally. I also really like their Autograph range.

OhNoNotThatAgain · 27/02/2023 21:41

Nope. The older I get, the more I think that M&S clothes are awful. When I've wandered through the clothing section of late (on the way to the food hall, I hasten to add), it has reminded me of the 80's with the colours, cuts and all the goddam stripes and wishy-washy denim.

It is a good 10 years since I found anything in there I liked.

Talia99 · 27/02/2023 21:41

I never stopped buying my ‘sensible’ underwear there (the sort you might have to show to a doctor). I like their cashmere jumpers and cardigans though they seem to be on the expensive side (not more than anywhere else, just not better value than other sellers).

fruitandfibreg · 27/02/2023 21:42

Hm. I found it all quite mumsy. I am a mum but it was too much for me
