Since when has M&S been so good for clothes?!

After years of being dragged round M&S with my gran and swearing I'd never ever shop there..... I now own a Per Una jacket Shock

I was given a voucher for Asos for Christmas, still haven't managed to spend it and instead my last 5 purchases have all been Markies.

I've bought M&S jeggings since my mid 20's 🙌🏻

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 28/02/2023 08:58

I've been a secret convert to them for years. Their Goodmove stuff is great, and I'm currently wearing a pair of smart joggers from there at work. The beauty range is great, and I love their standard merino wool jumpers.

Me and Em are happy to sell polyester for £400 - I really don't rate them. I loved these trousers from them, but I'm not paying £200 for recycled polyester.

In a land, a long, long, time ago, I loved to visit the Marble Arch M&S that carried clothing available no where else and spent far too much on items made of pure new wool, dresses that flattered and seemed timeless and never creased or lost their colour, with some items worn till they disintegrated. Knitwear was a real favourite and I often bought from the menswear department, again they carried a range of Italian knitwear that screamed quality and style (not necessary for me to have the latest trend, just one that makes me look good). In their race to the bottom I struggled to find anything of late until a few weeks ago! I went into the cosmetics department and found a great range of body butters and scrubs, made in the UK and on the way out of the door a denim blue, cotton / linen mix jacket caught my eye and then the wide leg trousers. Tried on and a real hit in terms of weight of fabric, cut and style. It does depend on what the individual store carries in terms of range and that purchase has inspired me to order some navy trousers (Me & em lookalikes) to try. I believe we are seeing the juggernaut turning and I do hope it continues, as the high street needs at least one shop you can turn to.

I love their ankle grazer trousers. I’m short 5’3” and usually have to shorten trousers but their ankle grazers fit me perfectly.
Looks like I need to rethink my opinion on M&S as I impressed with M&S a year ago, everything was so frumpy.

Daffodilsandtuplips · 28/02/2023 09:15
  • Wasn't impressed.
Dudum · 28/02/2023 09:17

Every couple of weeks there's a thread, ooh, going to M&S food hall tell
Me what to buy. And now they're flogging us per una flats. No fucking thank you 🤣

theDudesmummy · 28/02/2023 09:19

I'm 60. I have worn M&S trousers to work my whole adult life and continue to do so. My allegiance to their other stuff (apart from bras) waxes and wanes.

Mercurial123 · 28/02/2023 10:02

I'd have to disagree. It's depressing and quality has declined.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 28/02/2023 10:26

I would also like to add massive kudos to them for keeping click and collect free, no matter how small your order. That's frequently a reason for me to choose M&S over John Lewis.

NeedWineNow · 28/02/2023 10:36

I really like their jeans and also the relaxed fit t-shirts. I'm not a fan of their basic t-shirt bras but I do love the Rosie range. Beauty department is excellent I think, with all the different brands.

Some of the knitwear colours can be slightly 'off' and I think you have to search for natural fibres but by and large I think they are coming back as a store. DH has always rated the men's stuff.

Agree - their delivery is pretty good but the click and collect and seamless returns processes are winners. I have a Simply Food at work and can drop stuff of there.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 28/02/2023 10:39

Off, not of!

Shopaholic100 · 28/02/2023 10:41

It would be good if they let you collect from a local store, like you can collect John Lewis orders from CO OP. I used to use them a lot but they closed all the local stores so I’ve moved to John Lewis.

bravelittletiger · 28/02/2023 10:46

I've found liking M&S clothes is in direct correlation to number of years over 30
You are 😂. Happens to us all eventually. You think "oh that's lovely quality" or "those would be ideal for play dates" or "look how versatile those comfortable looking trousers are!". It's an age thing I'm afraid.

stepfordwifey · 28/02/2023 10:50

I find some of the knitwear so garish, especially their take on pink and green. I have however had some really nice roll neck jumpers in dark colours with drop shoulders that have seen me through with jeans and boots.
I struggle with the waistband on their jeans as it's always a bit snug but they fit everywhere else. Annoying as I keep trying different styles. Eventually I had to buy my chinos from Next, admittedly in a bigger size but they're really comfy and look more flattering.
The rubberised rain Mac has been my favourite purchase in recent months.

BitOutOfPractice · 28/02/2023 07:45

That’s because they are a third of the price. That’s not a surprise surely?

I am loving M&S at the moment. I’m a long time fan but I go through phases of loving everything and not being able to find anything.

I’ve had a charge card since 1989. I think it’s the last one standing

Who was surprised? Don’t recall reading that in my post. 🙄

I think it depends on the store. The Meadowhall one is excellent, as is the one at the Metrocentre.

Rshard · 28/02/2023 11:18

You can collect from a local store @Shopaholic100 . I once managed to leave a collected parcel in store and to my eternal amazement someone had handed it in.

Menswear is good the moment too, my dh had bought several bits recently

Yellowdays · 28/02/2023 11:24

Is someone here a marketing manager for M and S? 🤣🙂

I'm not old, I'm a young thing!

I hate to break it to you but no one on MN taking about M&S can claim to be young 😉

theDudesmummy · 28/02/2023 11:35

I also buy school clothes there. The free returns also make a massive difference to me.

bluetongue · 28/02/2023 11:47

I spent hours here in Australia trying to find jeans that fitted me and looked good. Nearly drove me insane. Was in London recently on holiday and popped into M&S on Kensington High Street (as you do) just out of curiosity. Thought the jeans looked okay and the first pair I tried on fitted me perfectly! Had to buy them of course.

I did find the store and people working there a bit odd though.

dontgobaconmyheart · 28/02/2023 11:54

Hmm I'm not sure. I'm mid thirties and haven't ever made a fashion purchase in M&S - but do like their thermal leggings and a few other similar non glamorous things for around the house. DP often buys work clothes from there and the sizing and quality is very, very variable.

Fashion clothing wise I still think almost all of what I see in there looks dated or a bit naff for the price or just isn't my style. I'd happily shop in there in theory but in practice nothing ever draws me in.

FinallyHere · 28/02/2023 13:20

I've caught myself thinking the same as @scoobycute I'm wearing a pair of high waisted leather look leggings as I type this.

My most admired item of clothing by a country mile. Not just my many frumpy friends, literally everyone I know (and a few random strangers) have admired these.

Anotherusernamethisweek · 28/02/2023 14:03

I'm 45 and I just walked through M&S this morning and thought I should come back and get a few things. I wondered if I was just at that age now or if M&S had some new designers 🤣
Maybe both? 😂
