If you are at home today, what temperature is your house?

Without the heating on our house seems to fall to 11-12 degrees. I don't know if that is normal or if I just really feel the cold. We obviously can't afford to have the heating on all of the time but I just find it so miserable being cold.

14, after turning the heating off at 8pm yesterday (it was set to 18 degrees). It’s not a particularly cold day outside today.

I don’t know why real wool jumpers stopped becoming the norm. I try to wear wool or cheap cashmere in the winter as it really makes a difference to my body temperature. I often wear a woolly scarf inside too. I’m always amazed when I go to the supermarket in the autumn or spring when it’s only 10 degrees but sunny outside and see people in there wandering around in shorts and flip flops. I always wonder whether their house is heated to 22 or something all year round or if they genuinely don’t feel the cold.

17 - no heating on. Although may be cooler as DH has been in and out of the back door always leaves the lobby door ajar

Orchid90 · 27/02/2023 10:17

mine is set to not go below 15 ..but it would go down to 12 easily. Even less.

Logburnerperils · 27/02/2023 10:17

It hovers between 12 and 15 most days at the moment. Heating set to come on if it falls below 12. You guys have some crazy temps on here and then moan when you have £300+ gas bills.

Thesearmsofmine · 27/02/2023 10:18

Currently 12, we didn’t have the heating on at all yesterday so it’s dropped low right now but will pop it on later for a bit. Really looking forward to warmer days.

Oh o do heat @Iminthecupboard

I just wonder where someone who lives with no heating at all actually is based because around here you would seriously damage yourself and your home with no heating at all

And I worry that someone saying they live totally without heating is making other people think that's ok and normal - which for most ( all ? ) of the uk it isn't

yes, of course for many years we lived without central heating in our homes but people DID heat their home in other ways eg coal fire in the living rooms downstairs. There were often fireplaces upstairs too but my dad says these were almost never lit. Only if you were ill in bed.

How much are your bills? must just be lucky as our heating is set to 18.5. We pay around 160 per month for joint gas and electric (fixed tariff)

We have a national trust house near to us. I remember seeing an old barometer in a side board. It said that “room temperature” should be 15-16, and for “invalids” it should be 17-18.

I remember thinking that if I’m ever ill (like I am today) I feel so cold and shivery and would NOT be warm with a room temp of 17! Unless I had a raging fever that is.

I found it interesting, realising how we have come to accept “room temperature” as a standard 18 degrees.

Thatladdo · 27/02/2023 10:34

22 degrees, heating on and set to 22 degrees 24 hours a day, 3Hr 28Min Runtime so far today, if it is knocked off overnight it will drop no lower than 17 degrees.
Had no heating for 3 days last week as a New oild boiler was fitted and it was terrible, 13 in some rooms - One oil filled electric rad was set on medium to heat room to just over 20 and over the span of 2 days cost £25.
Old, uninsulated property, built directly onto the ground with stone / slate flag floors.

SweetPetrichor · 27/02/2023 10:35

My home office is currently 13.5 degrees but it is warmer downstairs. I’ve got layers on and it’s fine.

Walterwhiteswifey · 27/02/2023 10:37

Currently 21'c, drops down to 18'c at night when heating goes off.

Jellycatspyjamas · 27/02/2023 10:39

Mine is 15 degrees just now, had the heating on this morning for the kids getting up but I’m doing housework so 15 is warm enough while I’m busy working. If I’m in my home office I need it around 18 or I get chilly sitting doing office work. Usually heat to 20 in the evenings and turn heating off overnight.

userno777 · 27/02/2023 10:40

Thermostat set at 22 until 9pm then off again until 5am. Our house is v well insulated so once at 22 it usually stays at that.

NewBootsAndRanty · 27/02/2023 10:40

21°.

Who accepts room temperature as 18 degrees? I think that's a minimum. I think 20 - 22 is more accurate.

mast0650 · 27/02/2023 10:46

That's far too cold if you are at home! We have different parts of the house at different temperatures at different times of the day. My office is the warmest as I I am sat there (19 degrees, that means the radiator will be on in there for much of the day, it will go off later). The kitchen/diner thermostat is 17 (that will need a bit of heat on too). The living room, bedrooms are on cooler termperatures until later in the day so won't be coming on much until later. Our bill is pretty high but I don't feel it is wasted as we are heating the parts of the house we need to.

Mischance · 27/02/2023 10:47

I only heat one room at a time. I do not keep the heating on all round the house; only in the room I am using. The room I am in is about 19 at present.

Badger1970 · 27/02/2023 10:47

Ours is usually around 15c when the heating has been off overnight, and we only put the heating on between 4pm and 10pm (rural bulk LPG which is eye wateringly expensive).

mast0650 · 27/02/2023 10:48

Our heating wasn't working properly when it was very cold before Xmas and our bedroom/bathroom went down to 5 degrees. Now that was cold!!!!

BestIsWest · 27/02/2023 10:49

18.8 but feels warmer. It’s very sunny and the dog is snuggled next to me so that helps make it feel warmer.

Homemadearmy · 27/02/2023 10:51

My house is currently at 12.5. I have one of those oversized fleece hoodies on and a blanket and I'm warm enough.

mast0650 · 27/02/2023 10:52

CurlyhairedAssassin · 27/02/2023 09:58

i don’t think there is any house that would get to 5 degrees so of course it wouldn’t ever come on if it’s set to that overnight. Unless your house is an igloo.

It certainly will if it is very cold outside and the heating is not on for long enough! I speak from experience. Probably not just for one night if you have the heating on during the day though.

lmnabc · 27/02/2023 10:52
  1. The heating comes on for an hour night and morning but the temperature drops quickly after. I use a calor gas in my office
USaYwHatNow · 27/02/2023 10:55

18C,but we live in a new build. I think I heard the heating click on about 4am when I was feeding the baby, but it's not on for long before our super insulated new build holds its heat!
