If you are at home today, what temperature is your house?

Without the heating on our house seems to fall to 11-12 degrees. I don't know if that is normal or if I just really feel the cold. We obviously can't afford to have the heating on all of the time but I just find it so miserable being cold.

Currently the house is naturally anywhere between 12 (newer extension) and 14 (older part of house).

Starting to panic a little though as we ordered our LPG almost 2 weeks ago and it still hasn't been delivered. Worried we're going to run out soon. We have 2 small children so really don't want to be without heating.

The heating has been on in the living room this morning to keep the kids warm and I'm surprised to see it's still at 19 as it usually cools down rapidly.

I'm in the office but I've left the heating on 18° for the dog, she's old and feels the cold 🙄

I live without heating by choice because of the bills. My house is currently 11C but I'm very accustomed to it now. What you need OP is to be properly dressed. I wear 3 different types of thermal vest under a pure wool jumper and a fleece over that. Thermal leggings under regular joggers, regular socks and Pachamama socks over those, Tescos fake Ugg slippers. Toasty. My windows are currently open front and back as I'm super careful about bathroom condensation.

How do you avoid burst pipes ?

Whattheladybird · 27/02/2023 09:37

Heating was on this morning but it’s off now; it’s 15.5° in the living room where the thermostat is. I think if it gets to 14° the heating will kick on. The kitchen will be warmer soon as the sun heats it most of the day.

Iminthecupboard · 27/02/2023 09:40

How high are you heating it to? I have mine set to 20.5 and when it’s not on overnight it doesn’t usually go below 17-18. Have you looked at your insulation?

11-12 is way too cold to be in

Fuwari · 27/02/2023 09:40

Mine is set to 16 at night. I put it on to 19 a while ago. I'm on a pre pay meter so I don't have to worry about a big bill. I've been putting in approx £25 a week and it's not actually run out at any point. That's fine/affordable for me so I don't see a need to not have it on.

Iminthecupboard · 27/02/2023 09:42

@midgemadgemodge if you can afford to I would heat your house as it’s really stressful for your body to live in such cold temps. Put a lot of strain on your heart and affects your immune system.

Passerillage · 27/02/2023 09:44

15 degrees, think. 14 - 16 is fine, esp with the electric throw. In the evening I have the stove lit so it’s 20-ish and without the stove lit, if the kids are around I don’t let it go below 16.5.

midgemadgemodge · 27/02/2023 09:46

Oh o do heat @Iminthecupboard

I just wonder where someone who lives with no heating at all actually is based because around here you would seriously damage yourself and your home with no heating at all

And I worry that someone saying they live totally without heating is making other people think that's ok and normal - which for most ( all ? ) of the uk it isn't

Gamerlady · 27/02/2023 09:47

Currently at 13 degrees which is fine .. heating goes on later but soon as goes off .. feels cold again shortly after.. roll on nicer weather

Heavensalongwayaway · 27/02/2023 09:48

19 in the room I’m working in. Less in the upstairs rooms

EyesOnThePies · 27/02/2023 09:49

I put the radiators on in the rooms I am in and keep them at 17.5 degrees. Shut the door on the other rooms. My house was down to 14’ when I got up this morning (no heating overnight) . It will go down to about 12 if the frosty spell persists.

Peckhaminn · 27/02/2023 09:49

18 in the house but feels like -10! Got the heating on and the electric fire. Bloody frozen!

TenoringBehind · 27/02/2023 09:53

18 in my kitchen (Aga on 24/7)
15 elsewhere

feels colder because it’s very cold and damp outside

spacechimp79 · 27/02/2023 09:54

Mine is currently 13.5. Heating went off at 9pm last night. I will put it on for a bit so it heats up to a balmy 16 degrees.

Cookerhood · 27/02/2023 09:23

Ours goes on at 19 for an hour or so in the morning, and at 20 in the evening. It's set to come on at 15 during the day but never does. It's set at 5 overnight so has never come on.

i don’t think there is any house that would get to 5 degrees so of course it wouldn’t ever come on if it’s set to that overnight. Unless your house is an igloo.

MmedeGouge · 27/02/2023 10:01

11C
It feels very chilly.
I cleaned the grate yesterday so don’t want to light the fire- lazy!

Walrussy · 27/02/2023 10:03

20 in the lounge where I'm working (with an electric blanket and hot water bottle). Heating went on at 6am for three hours. I hate being cold. My dad would never let us have heating on when I was little and I swore never to live in the cold and damp again.

No, that's the point! But if we were away & there was a big freeze it would stop the house from freezing. We don't need the heating at night, we have duvets.

What do you do when visitors come round? Do you warn them to wear extra thermal layers?

there is nothing worse than going to a friend’s house and you’re just dressed normally and they’re sitting there in multiple layers. You end up chilled to the bone. It would be ok to be forewarned. Or even asked if I was warm enough so they could light the fire/ put a heater on in the room we were sitting in at least.

LadyPoison · 27/02/2023 10:07

About 13c. This house doesn’t hold heat well. It’s lovely during a heatwave but I’m not so happy at the moment.

The heating will come on in my workshop later so I can use it but it’s about 10c in there at the moment. I need it to be 15c or my fingers get too cold to do much

Oh right. Fair enough. We have ours set to 11 at night. I think I’ve only heard it click on during the night once or twice during the past 10 years and that was when it was about minus 5 outside. Goes off again within 20 mins in those sort of temps though.

WhoSaidWhat123 · 27/02/2023 10:09

In the lounge / dining room and bedrooms about 14-15 perhaps. In the kitchen (uninsulated old extension), will be much colder. I’ll make a fire around 2.30pm or put the heating on for a bit so the lounge is warm for when DD comes home from school.

cobblers123 · 27/02/2023 10:12

19 deg but I've just lowered it right down as I'm about to go out so it's on 16.
