Hurrah for the voice of reason. Now this is the sort of person we need as Prime Minister.

If you're homeless, buy a house!

Or get your distant cousin to arrange for someone else connected with Putin to lend you the money for ever at 0% interest so that the person who made the introductions can be given a job by you that they have no qualifications or suitable experience for.

HopLeaps · 23/02/2023 18:39

But but but ... if, say, some lowly healthcare assistant decides to stop being a lazy unmotivated SCROUNGER that provides crucial, exhausting and essential end of life care and instead takes an office skills course so that she can become a GO GETTING call centre professional who spends her working life being shouted at by people who have had their online order thrown over a fence in Basingstoke by a delivery driver who hasn't slept in a week... she could potentially earn an entire extra 5p an hour before tax. Which over the course of the year would buy enough turnip to make a really good cup of turnip tea.

Ain't no prizes for bystanders, baby.

Mari9999 · 23/02/2023 18:39

Why are people so quick to say that the cost of child care is extortionate? Aren't childcare providers entitled to earn an income that allows them to have the same comfortable life style that people in other industries strive to obtain?
Many families seem to resent paying for this very demanding service, and yet interestingly enough it is one cost that is easily avoided. You can opt not to have children or you can opt to stay at home and care for you own children.

The owners of childcare facilities are motivated by the same desire as any other entrepreneur, and yet they are often denigrated for their desire to run a profit making enterprise.

Many complaining parents might want to consider opening their own childcare facilities if this is the goldmine that they believe it to be.

She IS a turnip

Dymaxion · 23/02/2023 18:40

I can't remember the last time I saw a turnip in the supermarket, is it also a seasonal vegtable ? I wonder if she has got confused with swede ?

I'm a teacher. I work 7.30 - 6pm at school.

I've got a first class degree and an MA.

I'm not on a low income - M5 - but I'm a single parent so a single income household.

I'd like to know her solution for me.

What you need is a better paid job.

Oh. Wait. But we have a huge recruitment and retention crisis in teaching. If we all get better paid jobs…

It’s almost like she didn’t think this one through.

I'd love to see the repayment terms of that 'loan'.

MPs really need to be put on the national average wage of their constituents and have their expenses cut to zero in order to at least have an idea of what people are going through.

But the ballet lessons and school fees don't come cheap, so one really needs to tout for bribes from the Saudis to make ends meet. (or is that just my MP?)

This. Same goes for all those pesky minimum wage earners doing vital jobs that we actually need doing.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 23/02/2023 18:43

If I expressed what I want to do to these people, MN would rightly ban me.

Failing that, Keir should set up a Truth and Retribution Commission and have them all stripped of their assets, driven to the Russian border and kicked over it. There is now no Tory MP or donor who isn't a traitor, thief or nazi. From the cosplaying Gradgrind, JRM, to the overpromoted teaboy in No 10, not one of them is conducive to the public good.

Those commie bastards.

CriticalAlert · 23/02/2023 18:44

Evil fucking Tory bitch.

Changes17 · 23/02/2023 18:44

If people had been forward-thinking enough, they would have made a large donation to the Tory party at some point, and then they would have cashed in with a PPE contract for millions. Sadly, people just don't think ahead these days. They have no-one to blame but themselves for that.

HopLeaps · 23/02/2023 18:26

No, they came in during the late 80s. Blair made them slightly more palatable by introducing payment for zero hours workers facing downtime in a workplace and outlawing compulsory rolled up holiday pay and agency hourly fee deductions. Which is something. Although not very much.

Thank you.

I need to read!

horseyhorsey17 · 23/02/2023 18:44

Talking of the job upskilling thing, I am an editor but have been toying with the idea of retraining as a paramedic, as it's always been an ambition and I think I'd love it. But then I looked at how much they get paid, and it's sh*t. I couldn't justify changing to that job (and as a single mum it would be a stupid move). Idiots like Coffey just seem to think we should all be hedge fund managers, as they're apparently the people who work hardest (because income level is a direct result of hardness of work), but on the other hand, she also thinks people in the NHS should work for love not money and live on turnips. But she ALSO thinks they should look for higher paid jobs, which would mean leaving the NHS.

NONE OF IT MAKES SENSE. We are being governed by utter morons.

I feel you are being a little unfair on morons.

bigbluebus · 23/02/2023 18:47

@jgw1 I assume you're in Shropshire? Gawd help you if you've got DK as your MP. Hopefully he'll be out at the next election.

Changes17 · 23/02/2023 18:47

We are being governed by utter morons.

I expect they think that if they got elected so could anyone. Which is both true and not true at the same time. Think you need to be a well-connected moron to make it.

Dymaxion · 23/02/2023 18:47

In Scotland a turnip IS a swede.

But they are different beasts, one is bijou and quite posh in a fiddly way and the other is big and tasty and cheap.

lovescats3 · 23/02/2023 18:48

The 7 th circle of hell has a place for her

HopLeaps · 23/02/2023 18:49

The only Swedes I know are very fond of cycling and not bijou at all.

I am NOT a racist.

SerendipityJane · 23/02/2023 18:49

No wonder the UK is in the state is is when people trying to help are treated with such disrespect.

The very same MP for Riyadh and Moscow is my MP, he of the expensive Polish lessons at our expense, a language he already speaks. According to electoral calculus there is an 86% chance of him being on his lemon after the next election.

Dymaxion · 23/02/2023 18:50

@lovescats3 Ocado are out of them, other supermarkets might be able to fufil your needs.
