Hurrah for the voice of reason. Now this is the sort of person we need as Prime Minister.

We should eat Therese Coffey, with turnip.

Arthurflecksfacepaint · 23/02/2023 19:02

When I worked 12 hour nights in a care home, I genuinely had people tell me to get a day job too.

There were a couple of people absolutely incredulous that I wouldn’t. Because they were asleep at night, so it didn’t occur to them that I was actually up, awake and working. And I slept when the children were at school, lazy fucker that I am, I could be working instead of lazing about in bed.

One lost their shit that I was “only” working 4 nights a week. Part time!! How dare I! Erm……except 4x12 hours is actually 48 hours a bloody week. They still wouldn’t have it that it wasn’t part time.

Said I should work a day job on “at least” one of the days I wasn’t working 🤣

This smacks of that sort of thinking.

letthemalldoone · 23/02/2023 19:03

Fuck that for a game of soldiers, now there'll be a run on turnips and then what will we do?!

Can't decide on dinner tonight - baked potato with cheese and turnip, or an omelette with cheese, ham and turnip... spoilt for choice!

I can work as many hours as I like but the organisation I work for won't pay me to do it!! Hasn't been paid overtime since pussy was a kitten!!

Good job she has private healthcare otherwise that chubby, cigar smoking, champers quaffing cow would cost the NHS a fortune in a few years.

Which is fortunate for her of course because if everyone takes her advice there won't be any staff left to run the NHS.

I'm a lone parent due to bereavement. How exactly do I balance childcare with extra hours? I suspect you are being sarcastic.

Name999999 · 23/02/2023 19:06

Hasn’t she said something like this before? We are an expensive country with a poor population. Fuck Brexit.

frozendaisy · 23/02/2023 19:07

If Coffey has the answer we are asking the wrong questions.

Absolutely we need her as PM. On her watch the DWP covered up the fact that vulnerable disabled people had wrongly had benefits stopped and sanctioned and had lost their homes, and in some cases their lives as a result. They then commissioned a report which reinforced the fact that DWP was to blame for claimant suicides and deprivation as a result of these failures, which Coffey then refused to publish. The Tories enjoy sticking it to people and they’re not fit to be in office. Roll on 2024.

You’d get a fair few joints out of her ankles alone !!

Dymaxion · 23/02/2023 19:10

But how will I afford more childcare in the evenings if I’m working?

If you can't afford a live in Nanny, you probably shouldn't be having children, perhaps a job looking after someone elses might be more financially prudent ? Obviously if you have your own children already, they might be able to take up some sort of role in the household, under scullery maid or similar ?

Put the kids up chimneys or down coal mines. No need for child care and they can be earning their keep.

postwarbulge · 23/02/2023 19:10

@SerendipityJane Like Therese Coffey, I wonder if someone his shit on your brains and forgotten to flush.

jgw1 · 23/02/2023 18:52

I have been trying to smoke turnips for months, it really doesn't work, if only I had known to eat them before.

@jgw1

Sometimes, in the workhouse, if you give it your all, they allow you to smoke your turnips over the coal fire, provided you've mined enough. I understand that if done right it's indistinguishable from the finest smoked salmon.

Maireas · 23/02/2023 19:15

I'm fed up with all these lazy children not earning their keep. 10 year olds are more than capable of working shifts in unskilled jobs.
You have very prudent parents on here, charging their children board and lodging - just because they're your children they shouldn't live in your house for free. There was one mum charging her 6th former son £80 per month.
If you have a child that doesn't do at least a few hours paid employment a week, then withdraw food and heating. Let's stop all these hangers on.

TheDogthatDug · 23/02/2023 19:15

I've just had a look for turnip recipes.

Quite fancy this one

They've closed the coal mines down and I don't think log-burners news chimney-sweeps.

Sending them out to dig turnips would solve two problems in one though.

SerendipityJane · 23/02/2023 18:49

No wonder the UK is in the state is is when people trying to help are treated with such disrespect.

Prove to me that ANY Tory MP is ‘trying to help’ . The UK is in the state it’s in because of the Tories and you have it arse about face - it is they who are disrespecting us. Where have you been for the last few months - have you missed the shit show they turned the UK into during the summer and beyond ?

To be honest, it's hard to believe that people can be either so gullible or so thick that they can't see what a load of empty drivel such statements are.

The same is true of the 'you should upskill/ get a better paid job' .
Those who are able and get the opportunity already do that, but even if it were possible for everyone to do that - which it clearly isn't - the the country would quickly be in even deeper sh* than it is now, because there would literally be no one left to do all those low-paid but essential* jobs The country would grind to a halt.

No job , however unskilled it is, should be so badly paid that someone doing it full time cannot afford a basic standard of living.

Maireas · 23/02/2023 19:17

Well, @pigsinoodies , I say reopen the coal mines. Oh, and those nice big chimneys were great, no need for central heating.

Pity they’ve closed the coal mines and stopped us burning coal at home - they could have been gainfully employed down the mines and sweeping chimneys otherwise !!

noblegiraffe · 23/02/2023 19:18

Please can all the subsidised food in the Parliament canteens be replaced with turnips?

RubyTrees · 23/02/2023 19:18

There is a giant field in front of our house which was full of turnips until just last week when they were all eaten by hungry sheep.

Damn them 🐑

Maireas · 23/02/2023 19:19

Don't we have Tony Blair and Labour to thank for zero hours contracts?

Not sure what your point is but I’m no fan of Labour either.
