Hurrah for the voice of reason. Now this is the sort of person we need as Prime Minister.

@HopLeaps exactly very good point.

@OldChinaJug

So you're done by 6? That gives you a half hour to get to your second job. You do a quick 6 hour NMW shift, home by, say 1:30 am, a couple hours of sleep and then off to teaching! I don't know how old your child (children?) are but getting their own meals and themselves off to school will pay dividends in self-sufficiency later! Kids today are way too pampered. And just think of the money you'll save by not having time for an evening meal.

Good thing Therese isn't such a snowflake!

👏👏👏😂😂 comment of the day

It does seem to be news to some people to be honest that they need to work and/upskill. Obviously doesn't apply to those in decent jobs already who are struggling.

Certainly it doesn't appear to have occured to Coffey to work and upskill.

4plusthehound · 23/02/2023 18:20

Don't we have Tony Blair and Labour to thank for zero hours contracts?

No, they came in during the late 80s. Blair made them slightly more palatable by introducing payment for zero hours workers facing downtime in a workplace and outlawing compulsory rolled up holiday pay and agency hourly fee deductions. Which is something. Although not very much.

TheDogsMother · 23/02/2023 18:27

Turnips !! It's like an episode of Blackadder.

AdoraBell · 23/02/2023 18:27

She might be right about seasonal vegetables but if you really think she would be a good PM I wonder which rock you’ve been under.

BIWI · 23/02/2023 18:27

JFC @SerendipityJane I thought your post was sarcastic. Didn't realise you actually agree with that load of shite.

Signed: lefty troll

Fizbosshoes · 23/02/2023 18:30

Upskilling often isn't free, even if the course is free you might need childcare and/or available free time to do it....and you still might not get a better job at the end of it.

Oh is it Coffey's turn to be PM, how cute.

Forever42 · 23/02/2023 18:31

Every so often the Tories have to roll out a soundbite to please their ever-decreasing hard core of voters. Looks like it's Therese's turn today. Ironically this comment will be aimed largely at retired people who are sick of whining 'snowflakes' and don't realise how much the world of work has changed since they got their 9-5 job-for-life on the 60s or 70s.

(I know that not all retired people think that way, but this comment will be aimed at those who do).

TheFairyCaravan · 23/02/2023 18:31

How is a private soldier, who is deployed for 6 months, supposed to work extra hours? Or a nurse, like DS2, who did 4 night shifts on the bounce last week? Theoretically DS2 could do seven shifts a week, realistically it would be bloody dangerous. Fortunately he’s not struggling for money because he’s got a partner and no children.

I’m sick to the back teeth of this Govt. A lot of the people who are struggling work in the public sector. Maybe we should cut MP’s pay, reduce their expenses, get them to work more hours, while increasing the NMW and other people’s pay?

WiddlinDiddlin · 23/02/2023 18:31

I mean, take it to its obvious conclusion...

Just work constantly, then you've no time to eat or sleep, thus won't need anywhere TO sleep, and if you ensure all the jobs you take provide a uniform, you will save on clothing costs too!

This also solves the pension problem, as by the time you're old enough to consider retiring, you'll be dead of overwork and malnutrition.

Fucking genius!

Things humans need:
Physical exercise
Good nutrition
Good hygiene
Shelter
A good, small network of human contacts
Health care for when the above don't bring about good health

Every day I get more and more fucked off that billionaire capitalists have us all on the fucking treadmill to keep up bullshit productivity so they can buy another yacht.

Completely agree

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 23/02/2023 18:34

Hopefully she will keep coming out with these belters in the lead up to the election…

The good news it that we subsidise MPs meals to a far greater extent than we do those of school children, so they won't have to worry about turnips.

Quveas · 23/02/2023 18:35

I'm seriously hoping the OP is being sarcastic.

For information, I like turnips and hate Tories, and I work enough fucking hours thank you.

It's crazy how out of touch they are! And so lacking in empathy.

They always have been. It makes me wonder about the people that vote for a party full of people lacking basic humanity.

Hello Jacob, still extolling the virtues of Victorian workhouses are you?

Widdlin you've single handedly sorted all the UKs problems, you've got my vote for next PM!

Hopefully she will keep coming out with these belters in the lead up to the election…

Perhaps in the echo chamber of fellow travellers that she exists in, it is a perfectly normal thing to say?

CandlelightGlow · 23/02/2023 18:37

I don't know why people are claiming what she's saying is so controversial.

5am - put the turnips in the slow cooker, get to job one

5pm - come home, 'nips down ya, quick kip, down to job 2 by 6:30.

Home by 2am, kids are still awake, fuelled by the unparalleled energy source of turnip starch, everyone has a cuddle and it's off to bed.

This is how people lived in generations gone by, state handouts have made people soft and weak. It's pathetic.

Charlize43 · 23/02/2023 18:37

MPs really need to be put on the national average wage of their constituents and have their expenses cut to zero in order to at least have an idea of what people are going through.

Podgedodge · 23/02/2023 18:38

To whom is it news that working/ upskilling should increase their take home pay? Some mythical ‘they’?
