Hurrah for the voice of reason. Now this is the sort of person we need as Prime Minister.

I'll just get another zero hours contract at almost 7 months pregnant and my dh can do another job on top of the 12hrs a day he already does. Therese needs to live in the real world not the fairytale land that mps live in where they have no cost of living crisis to worry about like the rest of us

GettingStuffed · 23/02/2023 20:29

Brilliant idea I heard whenever you hear about the economy change it into rich people's yacht money. Most companies could afford to pay higher wages but their profit means more money to the pigs in the trough at the top of the company.

Britain has always been a low wage economy.

Turnips are £1.70 per kg in Sainsburys. Not the cheapest veg.

They're the easiest thing in the world to grow and nobody steals them if you've not got a garden and you indulge in a bit of guerilla market-gardening.

newnamethanks · 23/02/2023 20:31

Don't worry theworldhas, Ben Wallace, Defence Minister, is suggesting this country will be embroiled in a war within 7-10 years so we'd better get used to living on turnips. Before they're rationed too.

Escapingmadness · 23/02/2023 20:31

@4plusthehound
Don't we have Tony Blair to thank for the minimum wage?

No, it was Tony Blair who brought in tax credits. It was widely said to be a poor economic policy that would be difficult to reverse. It has meant companies can keep workers on a part time wage low wage, and families can only work 16 hours per week and get a full time wage.

The funniest thing about this, is the number of Brexit/Covid threads which joked about eating turnips.

Only for a government minister to advocate eating turnips.

Some of us can very legitimately say 'we told you so'. But tbh, it doesn't feel terribly good to do so.

Baldrick will be turning in his grave...

This! 🤦‍♀️

Not even a turnip shaped like a thingy in my local supermarket today.

pointythings · 23/02/2023 20:44

The NMW as we have it now was introduced in 1999 under Tony Blair. Prior to that there was a minimum wage in some sectors, but not all. Margaret Thatcher refused to introduce a NMW and the Tories predicted doom and disaster if one was brought in under Tony Blair.

Am I seeing things or was this thread zapped and then resurrected? Confused

Christ no. What for...stating the bleeding obvious.

What else has she got to bring to the table as part from being utterly charmless.

Cankles ?

No wonder the UK is in the state is is when people trying to help are treated with such disrespect.

Quick, if you get your skates on you might get the last booking at the Comedy Store.

@oldwhyno its not a hardship, plenty of the red lovelies in tins to be had if you need a tomatoe fix, makes your salad a bit sloppy, but beggars living in rich countries can't be choosers Smile

Makes the bread a bit soggy in a cheese & tomato sandwich too.

I thought it was zapped, but then thought I had imagined it as it reappeared.

Britain has always been a low wage economy.

And UC will make sure it stays that way. Why should rich companies pay decent wages when the tax payer can top it up ?

Fcuk38 · 23/02/2023 20:51

As a widow who already works full time I’d love you to tell me how I can work more hours with a 11 and 14 year old to care for. Should I just leave them to their own devices of an evening and weekend?

@RafaistheKingofClay @Dymaxion If you’ve never had a cheese and turnip sandwich you’ve never lived

SerendipityJane · 23/02/2023 20:56

Quick, if you get your skates on you might get the last booking at the Comedy Store.

Fond memories of the original in Leicester Square and rubbing shoulders with Paul Merton, Josie Lawrence, Sandi Toksvig, Jim Sweeny, Richard Vranch as it was a very small venue. Queued up from 5pm on Sundays sometimes.

I've made that. Chinese turnip is actually daikon, so not sure how big a local crop it is.

On a side note, woks of life are brilliant. I highly recommend them to anyone who can afford to eat

RafaistheKingofClay · 23/02/2023 20:56

I’ll try it after my jacket potato with a side of turnip to replace the salad.

When all of mumnset aspire to be comedic, based on the first 25 posts, this is going nowhere.
