Look at what I rescued from a wheelie bin this morning....

Isn't she gorgeous?

Some absolute tosser had just fucked her into their bin 😢

I saw the leafy bit sticking out the top of a wheelie bin on my dog walk and had to save her. I didn't expect her to be quite so call - trunk just kept on coming.

I've potted her and I'm letting her rest and acclimatize in my bathroom for now before I find her permanent home.

As you can see, I don't have a nice pot for her yet so she's having to make do with a nursery pot and a dinner plate. Don't judge us.

I hate cruelty to plants, I always head for the sickly rejects corner at garden centres, supermarkets etc. My friend and I particularly love pathetic rose bushes - they’re as tough as old boots and I have at least a dozen that were sickly individuals when I got them.
Sad aren’t I? 😄

TurtleTriplets · 23/02/2023 20:38

She is a beauty! Great rescue OP - I love my plants they bring me so much joy.

Deathraystare · 23/02/2023 21:05

I am sure she will be very happy and will forget her awful ordeal!!

I do this, too!

Do you live in the NE?

Are you the lady I have to race to the "dying plants" shelf and then we elbow each other viciously to get as many as we can? 😀 (Not really - but there is another woman who's also there a lot and we both tend to get a few while saying "If they would only give them a drink of water, poor things!" and "It's just cruel!")

Just sad ole trout who hate to see an unnecessary death.

I have several plants I need to get rid of (one the same as the one you rescued!) but I have no idea of the best way of getting rid. No one I know wants them! (I'm moving and can't take them)

Is the best idea putting them on the pavement with a "help yourself" note?

Some charity shops will take them.

Or, if you are in the North East - I will!

I meant does it have berries or something? How can you tell.

I don't think you can. I imagine that like many, if not most plants, they carry both male (fertilising) and female (seed-producing) parts.

However many of us name our plants (myself included) and just choose a name that seems to suit them.

My winter cactus is called Jennifer. She has a daughter which was a piece that the cat broke off, so I stuck it in a pot and rooted it. Her daughter is Winnie.

Geneticsbunny · 24/02/2023 08:37

As a fellow plant bin rescuer please quarantine this plant somewhere. It might have been put in the bin because it has something like mealy bugs which are virtually impossible to get rid of.

IceIceBabyBump · 24/02/2023 11:41

She's now officially Binderella. I told DP about my rescue mission when he returned home last night and dropped the name into that conversation. He was impressed. It stuck.

She was definitely chucked away, not delivered. She was in the wheelie bin, half under a black bag. As in, the top bit was sticking out above the bag but the bag was covering her trunk.

Her roots were all exposed, she wasn't in a pot.

Even if I'd been so inclined (which I absolutely 100% wasn't) I couldn't have asked the dumpers if I could take her anyway. The bins are all clumped together on an intersection of four different streets so I have no idea whose bin it was.

@AverageGuy Thanks for your manly wisdom on the law around this area. I've also talked to DP about it because he has a penis which, as you know, bestows superior intellect, wisdom and decision-making. DP has very kindly given me permission to use my silly little lady brain to make up my own mind about my criminal actions. I've decided that I shall present myself, and Binderella, to my local police station forthwith for appropriate punishment.

While you're here, can I ask the poinsettia people.... how do you keep your's alive?
I always feel so bad chucking mine away after Xmas, but once the leaves begin to drop, I assume they're on the way out. What should I do to try and keep them going? I love poinsettias and would love to have one year-round.

I did an accidental quarantine - she's in the bathroom where there are no other plants 👧

I’m no pointsetta expert but I got one to October / November before it died. I kept it draft free, watered sparingly with rain water (left in the kitchen for a while to warm up) and threw any excess water away after a few hours so it wasn’t sitting in it.
not sure what happened in October, I think maybe the house temperature dropped too much at once.

by draft free I mean, away from the window (but still in light) and away from doors and the chimney.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 24/02/2023 11:55

See no expert. Didn’t even spell it right.

Konfetka · 24/02/2023 12:31

I took pity on a poinsettia post-Christmas some years ago, root trimmed it and potted it up in a bonsai pot with 50/50 john innes no 3 and perlite. It's watered only when the soil has dried out, with room temperature rainwater. It thrives.

Of course commercial poinsettias have their seasons reversed artificially in order to have red leaves at Christmas, whereas my bonsai poinsettia is green over winter and is just coming into red leaf now.

IceIceBabyBump · 24/02/2023 14:37

Thanks for the insights into poinsettias.

I'm determined to try and keep this year's poinsettia alive for as long as possible Stand by for an advice-seeking thread in December 😆

So can poinsettia's last for a long time ? I've got one the dog bought me before Xmas, he died in January so I want to keep it going.

DIL had two poinsettas last Christmas.

One has inly a couple of lives left - they other has thrived and is lush (yes! LUSH!) and green (though no exert lowers, alas.

I think it's the luck of the draw.

I'm very sorry about your DDog - I have lost dogs too in the past and it's awful!

Though no extra flower, not "though no exert lowers, whatever the hell that is supposed to mean.

Bugger you, Autocarrot!

Used to haunt the plant department in Woolworths, they were awful about looking after their plants, but fair do, they used to reduce them to pennies! They were known colloquially as “Woollies sticks” and it was a matter of family pride to rescue them , the stick-ier the better, and restore them to life. I also used sometimes to lurk in our local Homebase on a Wednesday as that was plant reduction day, quite often met the same people there, also on a mission.

Emotionalsupportviper · 24/02/2023 22:12

Hahaha - it gets to be a challenge, doesn't it?

IceIceBabyBump · 24/02/2023 23:38

I don't live in the NE but kinda wish I did, plant rescue fights sound fun.

I might have to start paying closer attention to the limper-looking offerings in my local Morrisons plant section 🥸

supermarkets not watering their plants really annoys me. Such a waste of resources growing them just to let them die.
wouldn’t take a lot for them to be on capillary matting or something.

I once asked for one almost dead to be reduced as it was still salvageable. The response “I can’t, the code won’t let me for another two days”.

I had a similar comment when I asked if it was possible to reduce a desperately thirsty plant - "We can return them to the supplier" (Bet they can't if it is their neglect that caused them to die!)

Breaks your heart.

Maybe we should go in with stealthy watering cans

I always stand fallen pots upright in garden centres and nurseries because I worry the plants will miss out on the watering schedule!
