When did it become acceptable to go out in pyjamas?

For context I live opposite a school and my work desk is at the window that looks out to the school, it means I can indulge in a bit of casual people watching while daydreaming and pretending to work.

I've noticed a large number of mums (never dad's weirdly) who turn up in pyjamas, big puffy coat, and slip on shoes or slippers for the 9am school run. I know everyone's situation is different and there are many many reasons why an individual finds themselves in this situation but I'm more interested in when did we become ok with it? I don't remember any parents in pyjamas when I was at school nor when my children (youngest is 16) were at primary school so is this a new phenomena?

Were you mentioned in it by name? No. You weren't. Sometimes it's not all about you, love.

Well, love, you were speaking to me before this, so one has to assume

CuriousMama · 23/02/2023 11:45

I'm with the 'it's grim' camp. I'm also amazed how many people only leave their houses to do the school run. When I was a sahm I still went out every day. As well as the school run. And I had depression at one point (pnd)
Yes a very very small minority will have health reasons for struggling to dress. But the others are lazy.
I dread to think what their houses are like. 🤮

CuriousMama · 23/02/2023 11:49

Let's face it when programmes like naked attraction are deemed normal anything seems to go. It's disgusting. I despair for dcs of the future.

They will think it’s perfectly acceptable and normal to do the same.

That’s the reason my child’s school try to discourage it. If you saw your mum and others turn up to parents evening in thier pyjamas like it was the most normal thing in the world, you’d grow up thinking it was fine to turn up to meetings having made not the slightest bit of effort.

I get that some people have pain issues, depression or other health issues that can make things difficult for them. I understand that. I understand that there are some people who it takes every ounce of energy in them to get their children up, dressed and ready for the day.

But that’s not everyone.

Some people are just lazy and in some areas, it’s just the norm to be a slovenly twat. Their children have little chance as it is, let alone having not being arsed to get dressed as an example.

I’m a quite senior hospital doctor and in the winter I drive to work in my PJs, and change into scrubs as soon as I arrive at work. We often do 13 hour shifts, plus 1 hour commute each way, I really can’t be bothered spending time finding clothes and getting dressed at home only to change again as soon as I get to work.

My ‘PJs’ are dark coloured trackies and long sleeve thermal-type top, clean on after a shower just before I get into bed. You wouldn’t even know they were PJs tbh. I don’t see anything wrong with this routine. (In summer I do get dressed as 1) PJs are more PJ-like and 2) I’m not putting a coat on top)

My underwear and how fresh it is is frankly no one else’s business and I honestly can’t imagine caring about (or even having time to consider) the state of cleanliness of another adult’s underwear

Tribollite · 23/02/2023 11:54

I'm always a bit surprised to see people walking around outside (not just sticking the rubbish out) in dressing gowns, PJs and fluffy slippers. I'd feel like I was in some kind of bad dream being in public like that.

HoppingPavlova · 23/02/2023 12:09

Do people turn up to the office in the PJs? Is it acceptable to go to work on the tills at the supermarket in your dressing gown? Of course not, so why is it acceptable to turn up for the school run in them

Can you really not figure this out? Because my employer pays me to go to work and as part of that payment requires I wear specified attire. I was never paid to do the school run, nor am I paid to get groceries/coffee/petroleum etc so any obligation re attire has gone out the window.

MyriadOfTravels · 23/02/2023 12:11

@HoppingPavlova do you do your shopping in the PJ you’ve worn during the night?

Genuine question because so many people seem to be happy with that on this thread but in RL you rarely see people doing that….

OMG! The horror!

Seriously, they're just clothes. Who cares?

I sometimes do the school run in the t shirt I slept in plus joggers, unbrushed hair etc. a right scruff

Then go home to do a highly technical, very professional job for which I have a post grad and am very well paid.

Biscuit

Hahah - you are me!

I couldn't care less - and have no shame Grin

I was at Legoland at the weekend and there was a whole family at the bar in their pyjamas, with bare feet!

At first I saw the kids and it looked they'd come straight from the swimming pool. It was about 6pm so I thought oh fair play, probs taking kids straight to bed.
Then saw the Mum at the bar in her pjs and bare feet as well! Could they have at least not put some shoes on 😂

Couldn't get my head around it !

Arthurflecksfacepaint · 23/02/2023 09:58

It’s the norm where I live.

Only they don’t bother with coats, it’s dressing gowns in the school playground.

Still, it’s better than summer when the school playground is full of dads with their tops off.

When it’s time for parents evenings, the school send out emails asking parents not to come in night ware and in the summer, they ask men to please wear tops to the appointments.

Imagine turning up to speak to your child’s teacher in your dressing gown?

It’s pathetic.

We live opposite the local shop and my office looks out the front of the house. I am nosey and and procrastinator, so I see people all day every day popping in and out in night clothes, and they are very obviously pyjamas and dressing gowns and not just slouchy tracksuits.

Where on earth do you live ?!

I don't think I've ever seen anyone at the school in their pjs and have been doing school run for over 10 years !

On the edge of a sink estate in a complete fucking dump of a town/area.

DiastasisRectiSucks · 23/02/2023 12:33

It’s “never dads” because men simply expect to have whatever time they need to get ready in the morning no matter what.

While mum puts everyone else first and decides she can get dressed properly and brush her own hair after everyone is at school etc…

It's just pure laziness, can't arsed attitude. Most of these parents have time for a fag though.

No wonder some people grow up not knowing how to dress for different occasions. Unfortunately their parents never taught them which is sad.

Ashtara10 · 23/02/2023 12:46

I often wonder what someone's problem is that they take so much offense and judge others about it. Seriously? Who cares

Soonenough · 23/02/2023 12:46

Think it got a reputation as being the obvious sign that you were unemployed. No job, no need you get dressed as you were just slobbing around at home. And we all know how some sections look down on so-called benefit scroungers. I don't believe that they don't care what others think as always defensive if they see anyone staring. Terrible example for children.
I tried not to do this when I was depressed as I knew it was not a good thing for mental health. Was advised to get up , get dressed , make bed every day . Go out of the house at least once a day.

Nannyfannybanny · 23/02/2023 12:50

It is sometimes dad's as well. Not the school run, but the other evening popped into one of the big four, while walking the dog, around 7.30, so unlikely his bedtime. It was very cold,I was wearing a puffer jacket and pompom hat. Assistant said I looked like I just come off the slopes. I said at least I had got dressed. Bloke in front black dressing gown with pink pictures, definitely PJ bottoms...bare feet. A couple of times when my DD has rung to say one of the GKs is I'll,and she has to go to work... I've dumped my coat over my PJs,jumped in the car,no one can see, because the journey was around 2 hours.

QuertyGirl · 23/02/2023 13:01

howaboutchocolate · 23/02/2023 11:18

Pyjamas are usually just tops and bottoms made out of cotton. How is that different from leggings and a top? Or joggers and a top? They're all clothes.

Some nighties look very similar to dresses, would you be able to tell the difference and does it matter?

There is no difference and it doesn't matter in the slightest.

It does however, give slightly inadequate people an opportunity to feel superior.

PennyRa · 23/02/2023 13:01

I've had people ask why I'm in my pajamas before when I'm in my work clothes 😂🤦

Who sweats all night in their PJs? Gross. Maybe you do, in which case, yes you should get changed! Even undies, mine aren't so disgusting they need to be changed immediately when I wake up Hmm

So you don't sweat?

Spend much time in pizza express in Woking by any chance?

Sorry, was it above you? The point I'm making is (obviously far too obliquely) was that I don't care what most people think. Frankly, it's none of my business what other people think of me.

Do you run your life according to the opinions of people on the school run?

I'm anything but unemployed (professional with free lancing) so I think I'm basically trolling people

😁
