Would you consider cauliflower cheese a meal?

So, I'm steaming veg (cauliflower, carrots and brocolli) and sauteing mushrooms, and I'll add some frozen peas and spinach. But this is just veg in a cheese sauce. WOuld you consider this a meal in itself?

Nope!!!.....needs baked beans and home made potato wedges!!!

Sunriseinwonderland · 22/02/2023 20:34

Yes a lovely meal. But then I'm a vegetarian.

mondaytosunday · 22/02/2023 20:35

Yes, but with bacon or sausages in it

HoodieBell · 22/02/2023 20:48

You need a little more protein from the sound of it but other than that it sounds like a good meal. Several of your 10 a day in there!

Wincher · 22/02/2023 20:52

A meal I like but no one else in my family does is cauliflower cheese but with a hard boiled egg quartered in it. Oh and sweetcorn in the sauce too. Lots of salt and pepper on top, glass of red, heaven. You can do it with mash on top but that’s even more faff apart from steaming the cauliflower, making the cheese sauce, boiling and shelling the egg, grating the cheese etc… already quite a faff for a meal for one!

PollyPaintsFlowers · 22/02/2023 21:02

Yes. I add butter beans for extra carbs and protein and usually have kale and carrots on the side. It's delicious

Yes its a meal. No different to if you had all those bits of veg and mixed it in a curry sauce instead of the cheese sauce. No one would say a veggie curry wasnt a meal

Most people would eat veggie curry with rice or naan.

Perfect.

RoseMartha · 22/02/2023 21:05

Yes but I prefer broccoli cheese and sometimes I add pasta.

Snugglemonkey · 22/02/2023 21:07

I love it and am the only one who dies in this house. I make it in batches and freeze some little ramekins of it for side dishes but often eat it for lunch too. If it was dinner I would add a salmon fillet, gammon steak or bacon and/or some garlic bread/pasta.

WinterMusings · 22/02/2023 21:09

GinTonic123 · 22/02/2023 17:36

…with rice and a side salad, yes but not on its own.

@GinTonic123

rice??

@dudsville I just had that for dinner, but slightly different veg. I'm a vegetarian low carber, so it's a regular meal for me.

I wouldn't serve it as a 'meal' to anyone else though. But that's the case with most of my meals 😂😂

XenoBitch · 22/02/2023 21:24

Yes, but I consider a tube of Pringle a meal.

dudsville · 22/02/2023 21:32

😂 of course, there's a time and place for everything @XenoBitch !

Butter beans is a good idea @PollyPaintsFlowers , I'd wondered about beans instead of the other carb alternatives but it didn't work in my mind. I was thinking aduki or black beans.

Yes

Arrrrrrragghhh · 22/02/2023 21:39

Yes. I’m a meat eater but cauliflower cheese is enough for me on its own. Has to have a nice brown top with crispy bits though.

Encorebiscuitandtea768 · 22/02/2023 21:39

Not my favourite but my DH loves it with a couple of rashers of good back bacon.

PuppyMonkey · 22/02/2023 21:41

I must be a bit weird as I can’t understand at all the people saying you should add pasta.

Fair enough I sort of get how you could have it with a bit of salad or garlic bread or shove some bacon in. But pasta and cauliflower are no bedfellows imho.

I also think leave it as cauliflower and broccoli - shoving mushroom and spinach and god knows what in is a bit OTT.

SunnyDaysAheadGang · 22/02/2023 21:48

Mmm cauliflower cheese.... Smile

IDontWantToBeAPie · 22/02/2023 22:08

No, but I have been served it as a meal before by a family member. It was fine enough, but I would never make it for a meal alone. I think she was worried because we're vegetarian so I'm just happy she accommodated us.

FrostyBits · 22/02/2023 22:22

My Mum used to make cauliflower cheese when we were kids. Just cauliflower cheese for dinner. Nothing else. I hated it but ate it as there was nothing else. She still has it often now.

It's a side dish, not a main meal I'd say.

tigerbear · 22/02/2023 22:31

Yes, we have this as a midweek main meal very often, in fact had it this evening.
we always add in crispy bacon, peppers, onions, spinach, leeks etc

I would if it came without rice, naan, chapati or paratha etc!

LadyGAgain · 22/02/2023 22:34

Yea definitely!! When I was small this was a main meal. We didn't have loads of money but we were fed and full and happy!!
