Would you consider cauliflower cheese a meal?

So, I'm steaming veg (cauliflower, carrots and brocolli) and sauteing mushrooms, and I'll add some frozen peas and spinach. But this is just veg in a cheese sauce. WOuld you consider this a meal in itself?

Yes, when I was a kid, that would definitely be considered dinner - like macaroni cheese, and even now I'd be fine with it as a weeknight dinner or lunch.

As an adult, I've discovered other people consider these side dishes, and it's another symptom of how skint we were when I was a kid, but that doesn't change how I think of it. Still a dinner to me.

Yes, with a salad. We have it pretty often. My DC love it. Sometimes just cauliflower, sometimes with broccoli mixed in.

MrsCarson · 22/02/2023 18:49

If it was big enough it'd be all I'd need. Makes a change from Carb heavy and meat heavy food.

Yes of course. I often have that as a meal. I often add garlic bread, but not always. Perhaps butter beans too.

Sarahcoggles · 22/02/2023 18:56

It needs carbs in some form but apart from that, or coarse it's a meal. Veg, carbs and protein = meal.

wendywoopywoo222 · 22/02/2023 18:59

Yes I often have it as a meal. Grate some cheese and mix with some crushed crisps to make a crunchy topping.

maddiemookins16mum · 22/02/2023 18:59

For a veggie with garlic bread yes of course.

adriftabroad · 22/02/2023 19:01

Very nutritious and delicious.

Definitely a main meal.

YellowDaffodillie · 22/02/2023 19:02

Yes, it's fine.

I often roast bits of veg and cover it with a cheese sauce with breadcrumbs on the top. Perfectly tasty dinner.

WWGDD · 22/02/2023 19:03

Yes with a salad

doadeer · 22/02/2023 19:05

Yes I would. It often was as a child in my house.

shinynewapple22 · 22/02/2023 19:06

Yes with a baked potato or garlic bread. Alternatively with a piece of fish .

ReadtheReviews · 22/02/2023 19:13

Yes but I'd add mash!

SadCelticBunny · 22/02/2023 19:14

It has always been a full meal in my family.
Like a PP parents and grandparents lived through some hard times so simple meals were always part and parcel of feeding us all. We also have it as a side dish with a roast dinner when we are being fancy!
Actually we are having cauliflower with parmentier potatoes tonight. I absolutely love it, one of my favourite meals.
Obviously it has a lovely layer of cheese browning on top! 🧀🧀🧀

Thingamebobwotsit · 22/02/2023 19:18

I'm on the fence but I can see that. Are you both meat eaters?

Also, this is for a wednesday night meal at home, not dinner guests.

Yes, perfect mid week meal at home.

I'm veggie.

My carnivorous family would also want bacon, gammon etc but they'd have to do it themselves!!

Doesn’t need any meat, some people assume everyone eats meat ! some nice crusty Bread or a jacket potato. But a big enough portion of vegetables is filling ….bread is always good though . Sounds lovely.

Depends on appetite

Allschoolsareartschools · 22/02/2023 19:28

Yes, on it's own or with a salad. Needs to be properly cheesey though!

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 22/02/2023 19:28

Absolutely, with sautéed onions. Then extra cheese & breadcrumbs on top and a simple green salad. Delicious.
