Good article on the benefits of another route to disrupt the China-Russia ganging up against the US: www.thenation.com/article/world/biden-doesnt-need-to-keep-pushing-xi-and-putin-closer/

Summary quotes:

  • The history of the strategic triangle has created the possibility of a China-Russia alliance against the United Statesβ€”but equally so, it has created the possibility of US-China negotiations over ways to stabilize and reform the global system.

  • Rather than pressing Russia and China closer to each other, it is time for the United States to seek new possibilities within the strategic triangle. A more promising approach would recognize the salient differences between Russia and China and use that recognition not to split them but to establish a US-China modus vivendi. In addition to ending the current rush toward serious conflict with Chinaβ€”which Biden says he wants to avoidβ€”comity with China would also expand diplomatic possibilities for bringing Russia to the negotiating table.
Today, the United States and China both view their differences as making them incompatible, but those same differences just as often create a potential for complementarity. Whether the issue is a global climate transition, a framework for developing country debt restructuring, or leveraging diplomatic influence over both sides to end Russia’s war against Ukraine, making space for China in the global system is a far better strategy for pursuing US goals than is a destructive attempt to isolate and exclude it.

Ukrainian troops impress US trainers as they rapidly get up to speed on Patriot missile system

One underappreciated benefit of these courses is the relationships that are built. The Ukrainian battalion commander who went with his troops now has a close working relationship with the base commander at Ft. Sill. The troops now have relationships with their American trainers. These really matter. When the Russians invaded last February, American army troops who went to Ukraine to train their forces in anti-tank tactics got calls on their mobile phones from Ukrainian troops who wanted a bit of coaching or technical questions about the Javelin answered. These air defense troops will now be able to do the same, which is not only very helpful, it's also a huge morale boost to know that the US Army has their backs.

Lots of analysis urging diplomacy with China and warning against driving China and Russia together. In addition to the last one I posted, another here: responsiblestatecraft.org/2023/03/21/on-xi-putin-visit-the-us-sees-only-threats/

My question is, has that ship sailed? It's really quite hard to cut through all the stagecraft of the Xi-Putin meeting to really understand the relationship: it could be solid as a rock, or it could be for show; more likely it's, as Velina Tchakarova said, a "not always with each other but never against each other" pact. Whichever, is it too late to do a Kissinger and separate the two when discourse in the US at the mo has spent so much force lumping them together?

I think magnets fall apart when one side starts to lose its force and power.

Matching China for good metaphors there @Zuffe ⭐️

You know, the optics were bad and the relationship is bad for the west but Xi didn't (at least publicly) give Putin much beyond words; meanwhile Putin gave Xi a lot in return for those optics.

So in my head I'm simplifying the situation like this (to try to pin down the broader picture for my own sanity but please do pull it apart and forgive me for ignorance).

The world appears to be separating into two blocs, a NATO one and a new BRICS(or indo-pac Nato) one. I say this, but it's yet to be seen where India would stand here. We're in a Cold War relationship between these two blocs. Ukraine is a current hot spot and there may well be more later (Taiwan etc) Because of our weaponry and the arms race that will ensue we have to hope that, while this creates its own possible dangers, it doesn't turn hot in a global sense. It would be so devastating, how could either side emerge well from that? Warfare will therefore be grey zone hybrid? Focused on technology? The BRICS bloc will use a different currency and banish the dollar, diminishing US power and influence. What does need to happen is, as in the last Cold War, lines of communication need to be kept open and respectful. That isn't happening here.

A lot of what China is projecting (capabilities etc) will take some years and a lot can happen over that time. Was it Francis Dearnley talking about black swan events that change things up and allow for alternate possibilities? He suggested a situation where ukraine negotiates peace based on giving up land (!) but that this could be imagined as temporary, reassessed when putin dies. This seemed a bit mad to me, but what do I know?

Another random thought: does anybody know how the banking crises might feed into the broader picture?

Forgive me for my brain dump!

OP posts:
Igotjelly · 23/03/2023 07:17

Really interesting analysis of the Xi visit to Moscow on yesterday's Ukraine the Latest podcast (dare I say it Francis could even have been deemed to be positive....) In summary the view is that for all the pomp and ceremony it was really a great deal of fluff and nothingness, and essentially, as we've been saying, has just reiterated that Russia is the junior partner and little more than an energy supplier at this stage. Even the much vaunted multiple agreements that were going to be signed are a big load of nothing, other than the agreement on the Siberian pipeline.

MagicFox · 23/03/2023 07:19

Yes and I'd add to that that Xi's departing words to Putin have been roundly translated in a much more sinister way than is correct. The correct translation was "this is truly a part of a once in a century change. Let's drive it together". This is a phrase Xi uses regularly.

Oh that's really interesting, thanks.

I accidently posted the above update on that other "relations with China" thread. Won't get too worked up about it but it really does speak to the anti-China/anti-'woke' sentiment that they were speaking about on the Sinica podcast recently.

..it's yet to be seen where India would stand here

yes, it'll be interesting. India and Russia trade well together, but India and China are not friends. I imagine India will try to stay neutral.

I was reading, but it needs confirming, that one huge advantage China has gained out of this is the permission to 'aid' in developing the undeveloped earth resources in the far NE of Russia. Russia has been against this up til now for obvious reasons. If China really does have an agreement to develop that area it's another strengthening of their presence in that old corner. Vladivostok would make a lovely northern pacific port for them.

Russian forces conducted limited ground attacks along the Svatove-Kreminna line.

Russian forces made marginal territorial gains within Bakhmut and continued offensive operations in and around Bakhmut and on the outskirts of Donetsk City.

Another random thought: does anybody know how the banking crises might feed into the broader picture?

I have a relative who got sucked down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole. Some of which has proved to be closer to the truth than would be believed, maybe if you throw enough mud, some sticks.

Anyhow, they are of the opinion that we are being pushed into a Chinese credit style system, supermarket loyalty cards track what we buy and it would be easy to prevent people from buying an item by putting a block on that card.
The drive to carry id and (in the uk), to have to use it to vote (against our historical freedoms), enter certain buildings, buy specific items is conditioning young adults in the need for so they don't object when other changes are made

This feeds in to the company that Sunak is involved in (via his wife), being an Indian company still operating in Russia and being heavily involved in banking. The theory is that they are putting in the infrastructure preparing the West for a Chinese style credit system.

They believe that the banking crisis is being artificially created to drive people into debt so that they are less able to object and will be more compliant as a result. Nothing like the threat of homelessness to keep people in line.
