Thread 5 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

Kucinghitam · 07/02/2023 14:43

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads (thread 4).

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen a stoat IRL, but they look (from photos) very much prettier than weasels.

Ginmonkeyagain · 02/03/2023 13:18

It is also a wonderful word to say.

See the Other Place didn't have quality weasel content

Kucinghitam · 02/03/2023 13:24

I saw a stoat once. We were at some National Trust country park place. It was quite boldly stalking a couple of rabbits, which were themselves quite boldly grazing in the kitchen garden.

I was quite proud of being able to point out to FamilyKuc that I knew it was a stoat because of having read Enid Blyton's Cherry Tree Farm as a child, and remembering the thing about the blackened tail and the bigger figure. (FamilyKuc were unimpressed, sods the lot of them).

With stoats if you make the tchak tchak sound back they'll come back and look at you - the squishy kissing the back of your hand noise that lures red squirrels works on them too.

For rats you need more of a high-pitched hissy whistle sound.

I once watched a mother stoat moving her babies one by one, carrying them by the scruff of the neck like a cat with kittens, on a lovely May morning with sunshine and bluebells and whitethorn bushes and chiffchaffs. Happy days.

Great to know but, um, any tips on a noise that makes them very quickly move
away from you rather than towards?

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 02/03/2023 13:30

Just stand up and look human I think.

SinnerBoy · 02/03/2023 13:33

I was about 8 and we were out in the car, when a weasel ran across the road.

"Look dad, a stick running across the road!"

"No, that's a weasel."

I KNEW it was a weasel, but it did look like a little stick.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 02/03/2023 13:49

Weasels are essentially☆ very long mice. But fierce.

☆ Geometrically, rather than biologically.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 02/03/2023 13:56

Are stoats the ones that in their winter coats provide ermine?

About 'doxxing' - they obviously (sensibly) decided that they wanted to be owned by a limited company, a consequence of which is that directors have to be named. They have at least used a 'correspondence address', which is probably that of their accountants, as it's also the registered office, and apparently in a business park: it's not their private addresses.

I can't log back in to have a rummage. I no longer have my password, and can't reset it - Terfisaslur didn't work, so I tried Johnnyisahero, but that failed too, so I don't think I'll bother to try any further. I am reading proper books more now, so really don't want to get back to doom scrolling there, in view of everything that happened, and the things that were said.

Gonners · 02/03/2023 14:08

I was inappropriately amused by angelico's post at 12:53 being immediately followed by Mavis's: Think there’s a weasel in the living room.

I don't think I've ever seen a weasel.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 02/03/2023 14:30

I was thinking the same thing Gonners - admittedly I haven't lived in the same country as weasels since my early teens. Stuffed ones in a museum maybe - and there was a picture of one in one of the Ladybird 'What to Look For' books, probably Autumn which gave an idea of the size (because there were conkers beside it).

MavisMcMinty · 02/03/2023 14:57

Weasel update:

T’was a weasel, still is a weasel, but a dead one.

When I went to get logs, Badger went wild around the logpile, which he never usually does, so maybe that’s where it came from, and there’s a whole orphaned litter, just waiting to be caught. It really is a jungle out there.

SinnerBoy · 02/03/2023 15:02

There are people who rescue them, they'll starve, if left alone. There was a documentary on last year, with a guy trying to train a young female to be wild, he had to give up and let her stay as a semi pet. They're great, really interactive and highly intelligent.

MavisMcMinty · 02/03/2023 15:07

Maybe it’s too early for there to be babies, I do hope so, this is why I can’t watch David Attenborough documentaries.

I just want to see animals living their best lives, no peril, no thrilling death chases. If they must show animals eating, film it through a sellotaped lens, so you could believe they were eating a taco with salad or something.

StephanieSuperpowers · 02/03/2023 15:10

Weasel talk at lunchtime. For shame.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 02/03/2023 15:14

We can all just hope that Badger is convinced that if the woodpile produced a weasel once it will do it again, like a dog forever checking the spot on a walk where he once found an abandoned sandwich.

SqueakyDinosaur · 02/03/2023 15:22

4.5 minutes of baby stoat bliss here:

Great info!

We had a stoat in the grounds of a posh flat we lived in in Lincoln. I used to see him sticking his head suddenly above the weeds, a quick scan, down and on with whatever he was doing.

We also used to watch the baby rabbits playing in the grounds, but I stopped doing that after the rabbit I was watching was snatched by a buzzard in the blink of an eye.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 02/03/2023 15:28

They're adorable. And what a brilliant setup he has.

SqueakyDinosaur · 02/03/2023 15:31

Yes, I loved the way he was very clear that he needed to wean them off human contact, not turn them into pets.

MavisMcMinty · 02/03/2023 15:37

O.M.G!!!!

That was adorable, thanks for posting it! How wonderful, what an amazing stoatland he has created!

Britinme · 02/03/2023 15:53

Oh how lovely! Thanks for posting that video.

Kucinghitam · 02/03/2023 16:05

That was just wonderful! Thank you @SqueakyDinosaur!

Lovely stoat babies! And what a great set-up for getting them ready to be out in the world.
