Continuation of previous lifeboat threads (thread 4).

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Damn your Tammy Wynette earworm, elderberry!

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 21/02/2023 20:27

Tammy is never a bad thing

The bathroom carpet gave me an earworm by The Beat:

Carpet in the bathroom
It's so scummy
I swear my landlord's such a dummy
After splashing from the bath for umpteen years
The cleaning brings me close to tears

Carpet in the bathroom !

Ha! I should have known there would be a pun lurking there.

NotDrowningJustCrowing · 21/02/2023 23:30

Heh, I love many paws!

I'm on the recliner with both boys sleeping on the back of it like total dudes.

@Britinme I'm so sorry you're having to deal with that but selfishly it makes me feel better about my past lax cleaning methods. Or no methods. It must be so frustrating to know that he almost certainly won't keep up with all the good work you're doing.

@BinkerTell I wish there was an instant magic pill to sort all of this awful stuff out. Is it possible to go on HRT? The migraines may have nothing at all to do with the perimenopause but HRT wouldn't hurt.

In other news, I was not at all interested in Emily in Paris when it came out or at any point since then. Until. Sunday night I decided I needed to watch something quickly, went to Netflix and thought "Ach, I might as well watch one episode of this and then I can laugh at how rubbish it is with actual experience of watching it." Readers, I have now watched nearly the whole of the first season and frankly, it is sort of awful but gloriously so. I've stopped wanting to smack Emily's face even though her perkiness is unbelievably annoying and I have no idea why Sylvie goes around with her hands all bent and funny, but whatever. I am mildly addicted because the clothes are nice and PARIS! So, there you go. I considered being ashamed and then decided I don't care and then one of my honorary nieces was here yesterday - she's an actual doctor - and she loves it too so I felt seen. Then again she's of the opinion that I'm beautiful so I'm not sure exactly how clever she really is.

Tricyrtis2022 · 22/02/2023 08:23

I had a migraine phase too, but no where as bad as what Binkers has, and realised the trigger was having coffee before breakfast. Once I started eating breakfast before coffee they pretty much went away and now happen rarely. It was horrible while it was happening, though. I'd get the flashing lights and headache and then feel wiped out for the rest of the day.

Kucinghitam · 22/02/2023 08:31

I've only had a handful of migraines in my life (and I think they were associated with perimenopause because I only started getting them in my 40s) but because they only happened on a limited number of occasions, I very quickly realised that my trigger was prolonged LOUD NOISE.

Each experience was so utterly horrible and the after-effects seemed to linger for days. I'm so very sorry for people who suffer them more frequently.

Ginmonkeyagain · 22/02/2023 08:42

I don't want to alarm anyone but it is good to get sudden and severe migraines checked.

My mum suddenly started suffering from severe debilitating migraines in her mid forties as well as disabling periods (flooding, severe cramps, vomiting, severe leg aches).

Her doctor told her it was just the menopause and it would pass. She was also referred for a hysterectomy to deal with the period issue (it turned out she also had a minor prolapse).

It turned out to be a brain tumour.

Very rare I know but good to explore all possibilities.

kittykarate · 22/02/2023 09:06

I've had migraines, though infrequently since I was teenage - my trigger seems to be flickering lights (especially fluorescent) + some unknown secret ingredient (could be coffee, could be reduced sleep, could be Tuesdays).

They are frustrating because of how random it feels when you're on the receiving end, like Zeus just decided to lob a lightning bolt in your direction for shits and giggles.

Yes, spot on, as is this image.

(((Gin))) Flowers

OP posts:
BinkerTell · 22/02/2023 09:58

Oh Gin, that's awful. I'm so sorry.

I've had an MRI scan, which confirmed I have a brain but it was thankfully all clear. Flickering lights, loud noises and alcohol are triggers for me, but stress is the worst and is probably the reason I am now in a chronic and constant migrainous state with the odd few days where the pain dials down enough for me to function normally.

I'm taking supplements, ensuring I get enough sleep, eating healthily and limiting known trigger foods (though I don't think they are my triggers), getting fresh air and exercise when I can. OTC painkillers don't work so I don't take them, triptans don't work for me either. The two preventative meds I've been on haven't worked either. Last year I lost 20% of the year to days with migraine pain, this year so far it's 52%.

I'm on HRT and seeing an amazing doctor who, once I've seen the neurologist tomorrow, will work with me on getting the best combination to keep hormones stable as it's the fluctuations that cause migraines. AFAIUI, migraines hate instabilities - in hormones, blood sugar, sleep levels, anything really so trying to keep everything as stable as possible is the goal.

Sorry for TL:DR and me me me post!

Britinme · 22/02/2023 09:59

Oh Binker that sounds so hard. I'm sorry you're suffering but glad it at least isn't something more sinister.

weaseleyes · 22/02/2023 10:04

Goodness, @BinkerTell that really sounds wretched. I hope it turns out to be a horrible phase which passes.

CyanCrystalViolet · 22/02/2023 10:38

So sorry @BinkerTell, it sounds horrific. I’ve always had migraines with aura but the worst ones happened after I had surgery. One side of my body went floppy and everything that came out of my mouth was complete random nonsensical gibberish even though I knew perfectly well in my mind what I was trying to say. Then I started having more episodes, crazy light shows followed by some of the worst pain I’ve ever experienced. It’s absolutely miserable and you have my utmost empathy. When you know stress is a trigger and you’re trapped in a cycle of it you despair. I hope they can get you onto some of those really good drugs they give you after they make you try all the other options, can’t remember the name off the top of my head! I found the migraine trust really helpful.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 22/02/2023 11:19

((Gin))

And ((Binker)). Being in that much pain more than half the time xetainly earns you a bit of MeMeMe-ing.

In a considerably more trivial gah, I've just emerged from the dentist and I need a filling. My last one was 30 years ago so I'm not doing too badly, but still annoyed.

mach2 · 22/02/2023 12:47

Oh lord! Reading the above I feel lucky in the extreme. Hugs all round.

Kucinghitam · 22/02/2023 12:51

Definitely hugs all round.

BinkerTell · 22/02/2023 13:09

Thanks everyone! There are lots of treatments left for me to try so trying to be as optimistic as possible though my main concern at the moment is my increasing levels of anxiety. I was meant to leave the house today to go to the library and return some overdue books but just had a panic attack so have down graded my expectations to some minor domestic pottering.

I just got back into bed and Tinks has sat on me, so she clearly thinks this is where I need to be today!

NotDrowningJustCrowing · 22/02/2023 14:42

Cats are wise. They can also be incredibly stupid but when you're rested upon it's their wisdom shining through.

I'm so sorry, @BinkerTell . It's a while since I had a migraine and the worst of them were in my teens. I hope, so hard, that a solution is found soon.

weaseleyes · 22/02/2023 19:28

I'm afraid Tinks may have discovered your trigger and is now activating it repeatedly, just so you remain bedridden and comfortable for her.

duc748 · 24/02/2023 01:27

@mach2

I read the Starmer thread at the other place, I really don't feel like posting there now, but just to say, generally, with Starmer; the more I see him, and with each fresh utterance, I like him a little less. Spineless and unprincipled, a double bogey.
