I am really confused. The report says Johnson may have mislead Parliament, yet Johnson has said the following? From the Gruniad:

It is clear from this report that I have not committed any contempt of parliament. It is also clear that what I have been saying about this matter from the beginning has been vindicated.

It is clear from this report that I have not committed any contempt of parliament.

That is because there is no evidence in the report that I knowingly or recklessly misled parliament, or that I failed to update parliament in a timely manner.

Nor is there any evidence in the report that I was aware that any events taking place in No 10 or the Cabinet Office were in breach of the rules or the guidance.

Like any prime minister I relied upon advice from officials. There is no evidence that I was at any stage advised by anyone, whether a civil servant or a political adviser, that an event would be against the rules or the guidance before it went ahead. There is no evidence that I was later advised that any such event was contrary to requirements.

So, when I told the house that the rules and the guidance had been followed, that was my honest belief.

He said that, if he had known about “a matter of such importance” (ie, Partygate), he would have raised it with his team, and they would have raised it with him. He went on:

No such concerns were raised on either side and all my statements to the House of Commons were based on that understanding and advice.

Have I understood Boris' argument correctly that no one had told him that lying to parliament was bad so it can't be his fault?

Notonthestairs · 03/03/2023 14:09

Basically it's ok to lie to Parliament about the "little things" and Johnson gets to decide what is a little thing.

mibbelucieachwell · 03/03/2023 14:17

At best, if anyone were to believe him, he comes out of it looking stupid. A defence of 'I didn't know what the rules wot I made were' is hardly a testament to competence 😆

He really must be so entitled or deluded, or something, though to prefer to have public money spent on an investigation rather than resigning quickly. What happened to doing the decent thing?

tobee · 03/03/2023 14:20

I've long come to the conclusion that the only "punishment" that Johnson and Trump will suffer is how they are seen by history, long after they are gone. I'm sure Johnson has himself down as "a modern day Churchill. But better ". And Trump has himself as "better than God".

I think he genuinely feels he is a victim of unfair treatment and will twist everything in even the most ludicrous way so that it appears to align with his narrative.

Well now we know what the squirrel was for I guess. This lot make me sick

He's lying.

Maybe not. We now know he's shit at maths. Maybe he counted the 45 people at the party and thought there were only 2 of them.

Maybe he was too wasted to see straight.

DuncinToffee · 03/03/2023 15:40

Did anyone see Sam Coates on Sky counting the bottles in one of the photos?

Thanks for that link Roussette, I have to find some time later to read it all.

Just read this thread ShockAngry

Buried in WhatsApp conversations between then-prime minister Boris Johnson, his scientific advisers and Dominic Cummings, is an exchange which is arguably even more worrying than this headline-grabbing stories.
Johnson's fundamental maths mistake...

That's scary.

But actually the comment down the page about why Sunak wants young people to carry on with maths is actually interesting. He may have a point!

Blossomtoes · 03/03/2023 12:25

Why aren’t we all delighted that they used WhatsApp so extensively? I know I am, it’s an absolute joy to see them telling us themselves exactly how fucking appalling they are. I haven’t enjoyed myself so much since Truss resigned.

Absolutely!!!!

They are really regretting being so cavalier with their thought processes now!

But at least Whitty and Valance are being shown again for their brilliance and it's showing they did advise correctly and he ignored it.

Something they've tried to twist to their benefit too.

itsgettingweird · 03/03/2023 16:20

I think my DD has it correct. Boris cannot have misled parliament because no one believed a word he was saying anyway.

Your dd sound very intelligent.

Notonthestairs · 03/03/2023 14:00

He's lying.

Honestly?!

DuncinToffee · 03/03/2023 16:40

I wonder if his laywer has told him yet that he will have to do a lot better than 'nobody told me'.

"I believed that what we were doing was within the rules"

Boris Johnson has spoken after an inquiry said there was evidence to suggest it would've been "obvious" to him that COVID rules were being breached at Downing St gatherings he attended.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse. Particularly not when you're the person who fucking made it.

DuncinToffee · 03/03/2023 19:36

Oops

You'll never guess who was responsible for Sue Gray leaving the Civil Service and taking up a job with Labour. That's right, Simon Case....

But it was a stupid law, I don't know who introduced it, but what is the harm in having a slice of cake and little drink with a few work coleagues?

Fucks sakes.
It's not the dishonesty, I expect that - but the revelling in personal glory that's annoyed me.

So if it was all within the rules did Boris Johnson think the rest of the country were doing likewise?

Although if you asked the same of Jacob Rees Mogg (and his type) the reason we weren't all partying away was because we weren't using our common sense. The rules were there, the police were enforcing them, but if we'd had been like Mogg we'd have carried on partying anyway.

This is genuinely funny - Hancock discovering his affair had been found out.
