Tony's Chocolate - does anybody buy this?? So expensive!

I've started seeing Tony's Chocolate more and more in shops. It's very expensive as they don't use "slave labour" so the cost reflects the price. Fantastic ethics but it seems very expensive!

Unfortunately, ethics are expensive …

(Cant say I loved the chocolate though LOL.)

StillWeRise · 03/02/2023 19:20

I don't think its all that great taste wise
and I find it annoyingly chunky
give me green and blacks fairtrade milk chocolate

CottonSock · 03/02/2023 19:21

The advent calendar felt like a proper rip off. Gone off it now after that.

I love the orange coloured one! I buy it as a treat

TheChosenTwo · 03/02/2023 19:22

I quite like the chocolate myself, it just costs what it costs. Only really the one with the salted caramel pieces (or is it toffee! The orange coloured wrapper anyway) in though, not keen on the pretzel one and I haven’t tried the others as none of them entice me at all!

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 03/02/2023 19:22

Moderate chocolate at best

Disneyforaweek · 03/02/2023 19:22

I've had a it a few times but only ever on offer rather than at full price. I really like the flavour I've tried, it's the one in the orange wrapper

YourWinter · 03/02/2023 19:22

My teeth can’t cope with Yorkie bars, let alone Tony’s Chocolonely, which doesn’t even break into even chunks. Massively overpriced and playing on consumer guilt.

watchfulwishes · 03/02/2023 19:22

Yes I buy it for gifts sometimes, and some of the Christmas things. The bars are large so you have to compare the price to 2x regular bars?

Hollyhead · 03/02/2023 19:22

I love it, it’s my go to treat now. Instead of viewing it as expensive I think it shows up how much we exploit others just so we can eat masses of cheap shit. We should be ashamed.

I love it too!

Msgrieves · 03/02/2023 19:24

I think it tastes pretty ordinary, I admire the ethics, would rather have a ripple though.

AuntieStella · 03/02/2023 19:24

I wasn't wild about it. There were loads of posts when it first appeared saying it tasted how chocolate should. But I didn't think it did.

And of course there are loads of other Fair Trade brands to choose from

MysweetAudrina · 03/02/2023 19:25

I like it and buy it regularly.

DangerNoodles · 03/02/2023 19:26

I would rather not each chocolate at all then pay that much for it, I didn't think it was as tasty as other brands.

The only Mums I know who afford it regularly also happen to have loads of Grimms toys and a wardrobe full of frugi. Being ethical is an expensive trend that I can't afford to keep up with.

evtheria · 03/02/2023 19:26

After I had bought some as a Christmas gift for a friend, who raved about them, I thought I'd try one. It was just the plain milk bar (I have the tastebuds of the average 6 yr old) and it was..... ok. Quite disappointed as I thought I'd like to buy better (in all aspects) chocolate and the high price would perhaps make me cut down on eating so much so often...?

Johnnysgirl · 03/02/2023 19:26

I thought it tasted shit, tbh.

JofraArchersFastestBall · 03/02/2023 19:26

It's delicious, and I'm happy to pay more for something that is ethically made.

I also like the taste of dairy milk though, so maybe my tastebuds are under developed.

BevMarsh · 03/02/2023 19:26

Tastes a bit like cheap cooking chocolate to me.

evtheria · 03/02/2023 19:27

PS
I love Montezuma though, not sure if they are as ethical as Tony's but hope so!

greenacrylicpaint · 03/02/2023 19:28

I don't buy it. the ineven pieces piss me off. but I also don't think it tastes very nice.

ColdinNovember · 03/02/2023 19:28

very expensive , misleading claims the 100% slave free is aspiration not a guarantee

Justputitdown · 03/02/2023 19:29

I like it and I don't like eating chocolate, however cheap, made my companies which use palm oil or child labour.

sakura06 · 03/02/2023 19:30

I think it tastes nice. Wasn't there a scandal though where they were found to actually have used child labour despite their ethical credentials?! www.cips.org/supply-management/news/2022/february/tonys-chocolonely-admits-to-1700-cases-of-supply-chain-child-labour/

FaintlyMacabre · 03/02/2023 19:31

Lidl do a knock off salted caramel version which is very nice and half the price.
