Tony's Chocolate - does anybody buy this?? So expensive!

I've started seeing Tony's Chocolate more and more in shops. It's very expensive as they don't use "slave labour" so the cost reflects the price. Fantastic ethics but it seems very expensive!

It’s not very nice chocolate imo.

Bemyclementine · 03/02/2023 19:32

I've tried several of the bars . The green abd orange are ok. All the others are pretty unpleasant and cheap tasting. The "dark" bar is horrid.

Montezuma is lovely.

Tessisme · 03/02/2023 19:33

It is expensive. I really liked it when I first tried it, but after - ahem - a bar or two, I have gone off it. I just don't think the taste is good enough to justify the price, even with all the ethical credentials.

Deffo better chocolate out there.

Bluegingerbread · 03/02/2023 19:35

Tried and found the taste ok but the ridiculous chunk sizes too annoying, Had to cut it up with a knife as my teeth definitely aren't risking that. Difficult to share out for the same reason. Haven't bought since.

Mama198 · 03/02/2023 19:48

It may be pricey…. But it’s delicious. I wait till it’s on special to buy

Phos · 03/02/2023 19:50

I tried it because it was on the counter at the coffee shop at work. I didn't actually know about the ethics side of it but I won't buy it again even so, it was horrible. Tasted cheap and nasty, like supermarket own brand cooking chocolate.

yentirb · 03/02/2023 19:50

Bought it once and it was so average

TheCatterall · 03/02/2023 19:52

I love it and the ethos they have. It’s a once a week treat. :)

User17649787 · 03/02/2023 19:52

I quite like it but find it difficult to break to eat, its occasionally on offer but not that cheap, about £2.50

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 03/02/2023 19:52

I don't think it's particularly nice chocolate, I would rather buy Lindt which also claims to be ethically sourced.

xyzandabc · 03/02/2023 19:53

I bought one to try, to see what all the hype was about. It was expensive, not easy to break and tasted awful.

I love chocolate and have some pretty much every day, I'm not fussy, any chocolate will do, but honestly it'd have to be the absolutely last thing left for me to eat Tony's again.

Fluffleupagus · 03/02/2023 19:55

I love it. If you go to the Netherlands they have loads of different flavours, my favourite was a limited edition chai white choc.

I bought a ben and jerrys collab strawberry shortcake / white choc one in sainsburys today, not eaten it yet but very much looking forward to it!

chalkyc2 · 03/02/2023 19:59

I'm sure I read somewhere that the company used to have some weird policy for their employees of some sort of reward system if their BMI didn't go up?? Am I dreaming that?!? I think they were shamed into revoking it but defo put me off!!

Minniem2020 · 03/02/2023 20:00

I only tried it as we got a free sample with our hello fresh order once. Tastes like cheap advent calendar chocolate so I definitely wouldn't spend money on it.

reddwarfgeek · 03/02/2023 20:04

Unpopular MN opinion but I love it and think it's superior to a lot of chocolate.
Tried most of the flavours, not been disappointed.

larkstar · 03/02/2023 20:08

Tried it once. Thought it was very mediocre. I stick to Green and Black's and write a lot of different ones from Lidl - their whole hazelnut is surprisingly good for the price.

Ontheup75 · 03/02/2023 20:15

/Lidls fake is really good and much better ruched!

TomatoSandwiches · 03/02/2023 20:21

I tried the crispy milk chocolate bar over Christmas I found it Moreish. I can't remember how much it was, I would buy again if I fancied it.

kitsuneghost · 03/02/2023 20:22

I wasn't impressed with it

suzyscat · 03/02/2023 20:26

They'd get so much more of my money if the bars had equal sized pieces.

I know it's their gimmick to reflect the inequality in the world and cocoa industry etc but honestly I get it. That's why I'm buying expensive mediocre chocolate.

Rockbird · 03/02/2023 20:29

I've never had it but the name makes me irrationally angry so I wouldn't buy it because of that.

motimacboatface · 03/02/2023 20:33

You're missing out on anything really. It's average chocolate for a fiver.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 03/02/2023 20:42

I tried it for the first time when it was on offer at Christmas and liked it, didn't have that greasy taste that most of the others have these days.

WolfFoxHare · 03/02/2023 20:50

I find the packaging so aggressively ugly and the name so annoying that I haven’t ever bought it. From what I gather, I’m not missing much.
