Tony's Chocolate - does anybody buy this?? So expensive!

I've started seeing Tony's Chocolate more and more in shops. It's very expensive as they don't use "slave labour" so the cost reflects the price. Fantastic ethics but it seems very expensive!

Agree with pp re the chunks - it's really annoying to eat. I am a chocolate lover and this puts me off!

CountZacular · 03/02/2023 20:53

I don’t think it’s too badly priced. I’ve got it on offer for £2.50 for 180g which is fine. Cadburys offer price is £1 for 80g so it’s not that different. I think it’s better than a lot of the premium brands (hotel chocolat, etc).

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/02/2023 20:54

Being ethical is an expensive trend that I can't afford to keep up with.

I hope people who feel this way just don't buy any chocolate.

Because the alternative is child slavery. Not a little bit of grey area, children as slaves.

I wanted to like it but I hated the uneven pieces and the taste. Plus expensive.

Agapornis · 03/02/2023 21:01

It's Dutch, and it's what average dutch chocolate taste like. Usually more cocoa and less cocoa butter than Cadburys. They're usually about €2-2.50 (£1.80-2.25) when on offer over there - so yes, massively overpriced in the UK!

Their ethics aren't as good as they used to be. They use Barry Callebaut as a supplier, who "don't guarantee" they won't use child slave labour.

noodlezoodle · 03/02/2023 21:10

Obviously not the point of the thread, but I'm still upset from finding out it's 'Tony's Chocolonely', not 'Tony's Chocoloney'. It doesn't rhyme properl that way. Whhhyyyyyyyy would you do that?! Makes me twitch.

PauliesWalnuts · 03/02/2023 21:21

I really like it but find it really disappointing that they don’t sell more flavours - the ones over here are pretty mediocre compared to the ones in the Netherlands, like the Eton Mess or popping candy ones.

RedCarsGoFaster · 03/02/2023 21:21

It's not great quality chocolate. I'm not a fan of the flavours. The thickness of the bars is way too much for my brittle crappy teeth. I hate that you can't break off consistent pieces and that you have no option but to hurt your hand to break it into smaller pieces or try not to snap a tooth biting into it.

I've had freebies in Gousto and Freddies Flower boxes - I won't be buying it.

Greatly · 03/02/2023 21:23

It tastes like any other cheap chocolate.

skywalkersweetie · 03/02/2023 21:25

Fave choc of me and DP, two chocolate fiends. Only bought occasionally as a treat due to the price!

darisdet · 03/02/2023 21:31

It has a strange aftertaste. I really hoped I'd like it.

darisdet · 03/02/2023 21:32

I was also worried for my teeth @RedCarsGoFaster It's quite solid and difficult to bite into.

buckeejit · 03/02/2023 23:51

I prefer the lid version way to go with caramelised almond & seasalt I think

Wishihadanalgorithm · 04/02/2023 11:03

I rally like Tony’s. Have tried most of the flavours and loved them all. Prefer it to Cadbury’s.

ClippClopp · 04/02/2023 11:13

I really like the caramel and sea salt flavour but the chunkiness of the chunks puts me off now. I do buy it, and other flavours, now and again. It is the chunks that put more off more then the price.

The new strawberry cheesecake flavour is amazing, tastes like those pick n mix white chocolate mice from my childhood, only better!

ChocolatemilkBertie · 04/02/2023 11:22

I prefer standard Cadbury Dairy Milk - however I have bought Tony’s as presents because the packaging just has the right “look” for a gift.

LegoGoldenDragon · 04/02/2023 11:26

I don't want my treat to have the word lonely in, so never tried it. The advent calendar bollocks would have really annoyed me too. Stick to hotel chocolat instead.

What was the issue with the calendar?

suzyscat · 04/02/2023 12:55

It had an empty door, then 2 in another door later on. It was yet another point about inequality (like the awful wonky bars that ironically make it impossible to share fairly.)

I don't buy chocolate advent calendars but I remember people were raging. Sooo many disappointed kids.

Oh, ffs! Wanky nonsense 🙄

CottonSock · 04/02/2023 13:24

I was raging about the miniscule amount of chocolate in my advent calendar. £15 bloody quid. My kids got more in their lindt ones for a fiver (and it was nicer)

Vitriolinsanity · 04/02/2023 14:59

I got one free with Hello Fresh. It took the entire bar, but I decided I wouldn't buy one. It was nicish but the wonky thing going on irritated me way more than I thought possible.

101jobs · 04/02/2023 15:08

Tastes disgusting. I wouldn’t pay 10p for it, never mind the ridiculous cost of it!

userno777 · 04/02/2023 15:11

Far too thick and chunky and I'm not loving the taste tbh.
