Jack Monroe flounced from Twitter - Again

AnonWeeMouse · 03/02/2023 15:01

This time it looks like she was caught out in regard to addiction faking.

She posted a photo claiming they were of her recovery chip thingies and it was noted that 1 of them was for Cocaine Anonymous and another was for Narcotics anonymous.

She'd denied cocaine use earlier.

Early January she was in the Guardian saying she'd blown to s of donated money on Drink, tramadol and Cotswolds sideboards.
Seems the oddities of her stories are catching up with her.

Curious case of honest mistakes of someone who does good?
Or a devious chancer that's raking in as much as 30k a month of other people's money for doing nothing?

OP posts:

My hope is that someone has staged some kind of intervention and taken her phone away.

Last week she was tweeting for up to 20hrs on one occasion. Now either she had a manic episode or she was on one hell of a Coke bender.

Whatever it was it wasn’t normal.

I hope she is being supported somewhere.

She needs to close her Patreon down, taking money every month for stuff she isn’t producing is just plain wrong.

KitBumbleB · 05/02/2023 09:06

I'm a bit confused by the Patreon, can people not just cancel their subscription?

Yes, but then you’re unable to contact them for a refund/access any complaint procedures etc.

Nah, she’s Narc flounced like she did a few weeks back after bread crumbing suicide. I doubt she has anyone because if she’s anything like she is on Twitter in real life, they’ll all have been really low contact for a long time.

WaddleAway · 05/02/2023 09:19

KitBumbleB · 05/02/2023 09:06

I'm a bit confused by the Patreon, can people not just cancel their subscription?

Yes. And many hundreds have. But there are also lots of people who have her the benefit of the doubt and kept paying for a few months believing that their rewards would come through soon, and then cancelled when it became apparent they wouldn’t. They (understandably) asked for a refund on the payments they’d made for no rewards, upon which Jack sent them verbal abuse and blocked them.
Equally, once you unsubscribe you lose access to the Patreon messaging service, meaning it’s then difficult to request a refund from Jack.
Many also paid an annual subscription, then didn’t receive the rewards for the entire year. So they cancelled their annual renewal but had already given her £100’s that they couldn’t get back.

WaddleAway · 05/02/2023 09:29

But equally, even if you only subscribe for one month then cancel because your rewards haven’t come, that’s still money Jack has obtained by deception. If you bought something from Amazon and it never came, would you just say ‘oh well, I’ll cancel my account and not buy from them again’ or would you try and get the goods you’ve paid for or a refund? Why should anyone have to just write off their money?

robinax · 05/02/2023 09:30

Well i am autistic and have adhd and im not furious about her saying she has it, because she absolutely comes across as though she does. Blatantly.

She does. She sounds exactly like a relative of mine who has ADHD and autism with the chaotic living, disorganisation etc. They also exaggerate, but I wouldn't include that in a list of traits.

It doesn't excuse the lies and behaviour. Why can't she, as a pp said, post like Jamie Oliver and keep all the nonsense out of it. Or get involved properly in helping a poverty related charity. Stop the personal donation requests. Her family should step in also.

robinax · 05/02/2023 09:31

That was to @Branleuse

DontSodAroundWithEpoxy · 05/02/2023 09:32

KitBumbleB · 05/02/2023 09:06

I'm a bit confused by the Patreon, can people not just cancel their subscription?

Hundreds have. However many of them, believing Monroes apologies and promises to send them their goods, subscribed longer than they intended and now, not unreasonably, want a refund. At least one has begun legal proceedings.
Patreon really should step in and suspend her account. I imagine that would send her rushing to the Post Office within hours.
Jack Monroe has taken money from some of the poorest people in society and, by her own admission, used that money to buy drink, drugs and naff furniture. She has abused their trust and her platform. She is an unscrupulous and thoroughly unpleasant woman.

WaddleAway · 05/02/2023 09:39

I genuinely don’t know how anyone can defend the patreon thing. If she couldn’t deliver the promised rewards (when she set of the account she categorically said ‘this is not a donation service’) then she should have paused the payments. She has taken thousands and thousands of pounds of other peoples money and delivered nothing.
I subscribe to a couple of patreons. One recently had a tough time, and couldn’t deliver the content for a few months. So they paused payments, and restarted them again when they were able to deliver.

StephanieandKate · 05/02/2023 09:57

Cocaine anonymous is for cocaine and all other mind altering drugs though, not just for cocaine. So there will be people at CA who's primary drug was opiates. I'm not saying an alcoholic will be going to drug meetings, but someone who is addicted to tramadol and alcohol could well be a CA member even if they've never tried cocaine or it wasn't their primary drug problem.

ArseMenagerie · 05/02/2023 09:58

Her spending the patreon money is on public re

ArseMenagerie · 05/02/2023 10:00

record. Yet she still doesn’t seem to be making proper amends or recognising why she’s being called a grifter.
she didn’t seem to see any problem with the guardian article either just going on about the copper coin. Baffling lack of awareness.

Teatime55 · 05/02/2023 10:03

She won’t give up Twitter or patreon because they both make her lots of money. She doesn’t want to get a real job. She wants people to send her money.
She will suggest she is unwell, or secretly campaigning or she doesn’t have enough money, and people will send her money. Some of those people will not have much themselves.
It’s not okay.

Lem0nsherbert · 05/02/2023 10:06

She's a con artist, by her own admission. I'm amazed this hasn't been all over the media since the recent Guardian article in which she essentially admitted taking people's money and frittering it on sideboards and drugs - it's mind boggling.

Hardly like noone else ends up subscribing to things lomger than they wanted to. Sign up for things or dont. Loads of people now do a place they can donate. Some people ask for donations for 'emotional labour' for online activism/writing opinions online.
It is entirely up to the individual.
If i donate to a charity or an individual and then decide that its not for me or i no longer feel onboard with what they do, then thats up to me to stop.
I think its pretty well publicised that jack monroe has followers and haters. I find these frequent threads trying to pick her life stories apart to be gross. She may have exaggerated certain life stories - big deal. Any of my autistic kids would exaggerate things according to the size of how it felt for them.
All of JMs stories are plausible to me. Admittedly im not stalking her like some of you. But this feels like the absolute worst bit about public life to me. All thr lle arseholes that dredge through posts going AHA. LOOKS LIKE YOUR ARTHRITIS WASNT SORE ON THAT DAY. AHA. YOU SAY YOU WERE POOR, BUT YOU CLEARLY DRANK ALCOHOL THAT DAY.
get a fucking grip

StephanieandKate · 05/02/2023 10:17

Well yes @WaddleAway obviously that doesn't mean that applies to JM but plenty of people attending CA meetings worldwide will have another problem drug than the C in the title

Lem0nsherbert · 05/02/2023 10:17

People say you’ve taken money, I start to say. “Yes: ‘She’s a fraud, she’s a liar, a thief, a chancer.’ I’ve heard it all.” How do you answer that – you don’t seem like a fraud to me, but it does look as if you’ve taken a lot of money. “I’ve been an absolute chaos. I’ve been very ill, physically and mentally.”

I ask if the simple truth is that lots of the money was spent on alcohol. “I was drinking a lot so I was losing work left, right and centre because I was unreliable and chaotic. I was spending money.” Were you spending recklessly? “Yes!” she says instantly, with what sounds like a sense of relief. “Oh my God! You can go online and buy furniture. That’s what I used to do. I’d go online absolutely shitfaced and buy nice furniture.” What was the most excessive thing you bought? “Sideboards.” How many? “Four!” She is laughing, out of embarrassment. “One day after the next. It turned up and I didn’t like it. And then I got another and another and another.” Did you have space for them? “Course I didn’t have space.” How much did they cost? “About £300 each. Like I say, I’m chaos.”

Yeah I see that @Branleuse but I also see the lack of ethics (stories not adding up, not delivering on stuff, public cries for help) as problematic across all social media. From Jack Monroe to Andrew Tate it’s about accountability and regulation. She’s taken money from people and that should be scrutinised.

Lem0nsherbert · 05/02/2023 10:18

Apologies for the ridiculous gaps above (@mnhq this is so annoying). The above is from the recent Guardian article.

Simulacra · 05/02/2023 10:20

Yes, how dare JM be held to account for her own words/lies that are easy accessible because she broadcasts every shit she takes online.

You’re replying to my post so I’ll assume your remarks are aimed at me.
Can you please provide evidence that I am stalking Jack Monroe because that’s quite the accusation you’re making there.
You appear to be centring yourself in this discussion. This might come as a shock to you but since you presumably did not give money you could ill afford to an activist in the belief they were working to improve your situation, your assumptions are pretty much worthless. This is not about how you feel, it’s about how those who financially supported Mx Monroe feel.
If you can’t discuss something civilly then perhaps Social Media, or indeed any kind of social interaction, is not for you.
I’d get an effing grip of that temper if I was you.

SweetSakura · 05/02/2023 10:29

Fraud = obtain money by deception.

She's now freely admitted -in the guardian no less- that the lifestyle portrayed in hunger hurts 2 blog was an absolute fiction. That she had money but frittered it and that the soap boiling was "research".

Yet she rattled her virtual tip jar at the end of that blog and happily collected money from people she had tricked into believing she was destitute.

She's lucky she's just facing the wrath of people on social media etc and not a criminal investigation

Bankofrave · 05/02/2023 10:53

Sorry I don’t know much about her but I’m upset about the little bit that has been written about the kitten

why was it locked in a bathroom to die? That’s making me so sad. Who would do that?
