Jack Monroe flounced from Twitter - Again

This time it looks like she was caught out in regard to addiction faking.

She posted a photo claiming they were of her recovery chip thingies and it was noted that 1 of them was for Cocaine Anonymous and another was for Narcotics anonymous.

She'd denied cocaine use earlier.

Early January she was in the Guardian saying she'd blown to s of donated money on Drink, tramadol and Cotswolds sideboards.
Seems the oddities of her stories are catching up with her.

Curious case of honest mistakes of someone who does good?
Or a devious chancer that's raking in as much as 30k a month of other people's money for doing nothing?

I don't hate her, but I wish she would stop making things worse for people like me who share some of her conditions and life experiences. It's like it makes me and people like me look like frauds, when we have fought and continue to fight stigma on a daily basis. She's not giving us a hand up, she's stamping us back down. And that pisses me off.

I regret every penny I've spent on her cool books as well, the recipes are shit most don't even work and are a lot of faff for something that isn't filling and doesn't help with my money poor and time poor life.

It makes me feel like I have less of a voice, because she takes up all the space, and has made such a hash of it that people like me are made to look like we shouldn't be given a platform in the first place. She sets me, and us, back

StephanieandKate · 04/02/2023 15:02

Cocaine anonymous is for all drugs though, not everyone who uses it takes cocaine regularly or has even tried it, it's not quite the aha moment people think it is. Also very common for addicts to attend multiple fellowships, especially early on when they are advised to go to a meeting every day, that could be AA x3 nights, NA x 2 and CA the final 2 nights.

Yorkshirelass04 · 04/02/2023 12:32

She's cut from a similar cloth to Dr Jessica Taylor.

Another 'made it despite the odds' grifter whose empire is slowly unravelling.

I loved her when I first discovered her, felt like finally somebody is saying a lot of things I've been thinking. But yeah, another one who has turned out to be not who she says and that's a shame.

Ballcactus · 04/02/2023 15:11

The chip thing means nothing, people often attend AA NA or CA interchangeably, you don’t have to stick to one.

StephanieandKate · 04/02/2023 15:23

What did she say about DV?

ArseMenagerie · 04/02/2023 15:28

She’s a classic attention seeker who centres herself in every popular cause/idea/tragedy

Shes been:
vegan
trans
non binary
an ex firefighter
an alcoholic
spendaholic
ptsd
in deep poverty
in recovery
in a pub
dealing with a slum landlord
in a bungalow with stairs
in a two bed/three bed/one bed

none of these states seem genuine to me as they all fit with either the zeitgeist or to support other lies she’s told.
It reminds me of those southern Baptist grifters whose lies unravel and they lose their mansions …. Except on a much smaller Brit scale 😂

Simulacra · 04/02/2023 15:32

Someone called her out - politely - and she responded with

“When did you last batter your wife?”

That’s probably not even the worst thing she’s said in response to someone either.

Simulacra · 04/02/2023 15:33

The AuDHD stuff is like everything else - absolute bullshit that she weaponises to hide behind when things don’t go her way.

Like being trans/non binary, like being a lesbian but having had several boyfriends recently, etc.

Gosh that's vile. Not surprising though sadly.

JackGrealishsLegs · 04/02/2023 15:39

The chip thing wasn’t dodgy because it was Cocaine Anonymous (when she claims to never use cocaine). It was dodgy because it was from Cocaine Anonymous Canada 😂 (ie, she’d bought it online).

StephanieandKate · 04/02/2023 15:41

I found it now on Twitter, apparently she claimed it was her chip, but was actually a zoomed in image of a cocaine Canada chip, so not only the wrong country etc but she stole the image she didn't take a photo.

That's the problem with lying though, you have to have a really good memory. Much easier to tell the truth!

I think the worst thing she has said was when referring to David Cameron...

'he uses stories about his dead son as misty-eyed rhetoric to legitimise selling our NHS to his friends’.

Regardless of what you might think of DC, using the phase 'his dead son' to refer to the tragic death of a loved child is just beyond hateful.

Never heard of anyone being prescribed both mirtazapine and sertraline. It's one of the other. I don't know most of the others she's listed but that particular claim is bollocks

You can be given that combination to manage mental health, although mirtazapine is usually paired with an SNRI like venlafaxine or duloxetine, rather than an SSRI like sertraline.

The mirtazapine combined with a SNRI actually has a nickname in America - California rocketfuel. It's really effective in a short timescale. I was on it for a bit, duloxetine and mirtazapine. It worked really well except the mirtazapine caused weight gain. I had to come off it.

I know people don't like jack, but this medication combo is definitely a thing.

Screenburn · 04/02/2023 16:20

I don’t think it’s mean or unfair to be resentful that someone who cannot keep their story straight over the course of a single twitter thread has managed to profit enormously from doing just that. Making money from lies is deplorable enough but when that money is coming from kind, struggling people who believe what you’ve told them - that you’re just like them - it’s so much worse. I find JM fascinating and repugnant for this reason, and want to talk about it because I can’t understand how anyone is still defending her. (“Other people are worse” is a dangerous road to take - can we not criticise Sunak because Bolsonaro is worse? Where does it end?)

It’s also not bullying to point that out and to ask for accountability. Anyone with a big public profile making a claim that doesn’t add up can, rightly or wrongly, expect to have that questioned. If she doesn’t want that to happen, she could just…not make claims that don’t add up in public forums. She doesn’t have to be ‘famous’, or have a Twitter account, or post intimate details about her life, but she does all these things by choice. That’s not saying she deserves to be criticised, but there are things she could do to reduce the amount of drama in her life and she chooses not to.

For what it’s worth I have ADHD and it is absolutely debilitating when unmedicated. It’s almost impossible to muster up the energy and brainpower to do anything that isn’t driven by an external factor (i.e. someone else relying on you). I was diagnosed in adulthood and some friends and family found it hard to believe because, in their words, “sure you’re very disorganised but you always go above and beyond for others” but that’s characteristic of ADHD - the dopamine from doing things for others is just enough to enable you to do the things. Without that dopamine, doing something for yourself is nigh-on impossible, even if it’s really easy. This in turn causes really low self-esteem (because you feel unable to do basic things) which then compounds the inability to get stuff done. Even if it means your life is significantly harder than it would’ve been if you’d done the thing. It’s not a choice; it’s a mental paralysis.

BUT: this is why I can believe JM hasn’t got a PPC because of ADHD, even if she really is poor (which I don’t believe for a second btw) - because doing stuff that only benefits you is always at the very bottom of the (long, impossible, overwhelming) to-do list. Failure to provide patreon rewards isn’t, though, because that benefits others and the dopamine hit would (a) make it possible and (b) mean the shame and self-loathing associated with not doing it would be unbearable and cause her to pause it.

In addition, there’s one thing that makes a BIG difference to ADHD life: medication. It doesn’t solve every problem but on a moderate dose it is life-changing. My brain is quiet when I’m taking it and I can do both simple and complex things that seemed impossible before. 60mg Elvanse (what JM is on) is a moderate-to-high dose and it’s pharmacologically impossible for it not to have an effect on the human brain at all (ADHD or neurotypical - I know people who take it recreationally and all of them have felt some kind of impact on their mental energy). If she is still not doing basic tasks then it is either (a) not because of ADHD or (b) she is not actually on it. It’s so harmful to claim that it is and makes the rest of us struggle to be believed, taken seriously and accommodated where we need to be.

TLDR: It’s hard to believe any of what she says when she lies, on her own social media, so much. She may have ADHD but that’s not causing her behaviours; that’s just shitty personality traits.

And you dont know her either. Im not saying 'be kind', but please try not to be cunts

I know what she has said, unless you're implying that she's been hacked?
And what she says often contradicts - directly - what she has said before (and often, what she goes on to say later). The evidence is there. If you think you need to 'know' someone to be able to ascertain that someone can't keep their story straight then that is something we disagree on.

The 'Georgia cookbook' being full of lovely East European recipes is my personal favourite example of 'you clearly didn't need to lie about this... but you did? What else have you lied about? Ohhh....'

Georgia Church Suppers - classic Book, right up there with Flyfishing By JR Hartley.

I think for me, my favourite 'You didn't need to lie about that...but you did' moment is The Bath Coins.
Banging on on twitter about it taking so many coins to fill a bath and then confirming several times the bath was full of coins etc. But then the photographer releases a behind the scenes video that shows sponge and blanket and the rest filled in with photo shop. Why? Why lie? What was gained from it? Absolutely Jack fucking shite.

That's not accurate, if you go to AA that's where you go, they even say it's only deal with issues relating to Alcohol, believe me I know. So yes you can go multiple other types of meetings but if they're anything like AA it's for what they describe, they aren't cooperating fellowships.

Again this is not accurate, I can definitely say from my experience at AA it's for alcohol dependency and that's it, if you want to get support for other addictions you go to your meetings, of course if you're addicted to various substances then of course you might want to go to them all but they're not a cooperative.

smileladiesplease · 04/02/2023 18:47

Have read the thread and had no idea who this woman is.

My advice would be anyone who uses pronouns for themselves/sees dead people/can do building works for you as long as you give them a deposit are all scammy liars.

Respectfully anyone who sends anyone like this money is an idiot.

Silly woman

WaddleAway · 04/02/2023 18:48

Jack has also said she had an addiction to Tramadol, so absolutely no issues with her going to NA.
The token she had was for Canadian Cocaine Anonymous, which seems a bit bizarre as she’s never mentioned going to Canada (and she mentions everything else she does), and says she’s never taken cocaine, which to me suggests she bought a job lot of tokens from eBay (there are plenty available).

Ballcactus · 04/02/2023 20:07

It is the case where I am!

softswirlingsnow · 04/02/2023 21:49

I don't understand why she posts so much inconsistent personal stuff when it inevitably ends up in her being outed for lying or grifting.
I've looked at Jamie Oliver's Twitter and just see lovely photos and accompanying recipes. He doesn't moan about his personal difficulties and doesn't say horrible things. Seems so simple.

AnonWeeMouse · 04/02/2023 23:49

I think the stories are purely to wangle donations and push people to patreon etc.
Call it emotional manipulation, or cosplaying, or fabricating sob stories to garner sympathy etc.
It's all to garner trending status, which brings donators, which drive the income.

Other cookery writer have restaurants, TV careers, books selling 15k a week etc. They get their income from that.

Without social media and twitter, Jack Monroe would write books for virtue signalling middle class people who poverty tour their local Aldi and marvel at the adequateness of Aldi versions of their usual Waitrose products.

She needs the attention.

I find it interesting that those, on threads like this one for example, who jump to her defence, write a lot like she writes on twitter or on her blog posts. She is well known for having sock accounts isn't she?

Unfortunately, having had plenty of experience with narc liars before, I recognised her type years ago. When someone is always the centre of some drama, either the poor victim or the plucky hero, it's a big red flag.
