Just curious to know what other people's ideal temperature is

I got a message from British Gas the morning suggesting that I increase my direct debit from £81 to £159 a month. This is just for heating. They can do one.

userno777 · 04/02/2023 13:58

Serious question but why do people have their heating on overnight (assuming they are all in bed). We never have heating on in our bedroom and the window is open every night.

NewBootsAndRanty · 04/02/2023 14:04

Because i have COPD. The WHO recommend an indoor daytime temp of 21 and nighttime of 18 to avoid flare ups/hospitalization.

My severely autistic child won’t wear layers or sleep under covers, so we have to have the heating on overnight for him.

NewBootsAndRanty · 04/02/2023 14:05

That was to @userno777 .

GroggyLegs · 04/02/2023 14:07

18 day
15 night.
Thermostat is in the coldest bedroom

We've got a nest & it works really well.

Beezknees · 04/02/2023 14:09
  1. Heat it to 20 for a couple of hours in the morning and at night. I'm in a purpose built flat that holds the heat well.
Toastnbutter · 04/02/2023 14:09

21 day, 18.5 from 9pm

WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody · 04/02/2023 14:22

It's all utterly irrelevant because it depends where people have their thermostats & heating source.

if you put your thermostat in your fridge, your house would be boiling hot as the radiators try to meet your demand. If it's next to your oven, it'll meet your setting but the house will be cold.

draughts/windows/etc all make a difference.

Brontosaurus · 04/02/2023 14:32

18 in the day, 8 overnight

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 04/02/2023 15:21

18, but we only have it on for about 3-4 hours a day, otherwise it's off completely.

BiddyPop · 04/02/2023 15:24

Ours is 14 overnight, 16 during the day (but we can boost it easily if needs be) and 18 from 6-9pm. I tend to put a hot water bottle on my lap under a blanket when WFH so don't often need to boost. And if the oven is on or the stove is lit, the gas doesn't tend to need to come on in the evening.

42F. That's about 5C.
Our thermostat is wrong, but that is about right in feeling.

I hope you're pulling our legs.

MargaretThursday · 05/02/2023 16:11

@ThisGirlNever
Not pulling you legs. That's what the thermostat says.
However the actual temperature it heats up to is around 18C. The thermostat is wrongly set.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 05/02/2023 20:11

@MargaretThursday is your thermostat new? We have the same problem - thermostat says it’s 21 deg, when a separate old school thermometer says it’s 10 degrees! Brand new as well.
tempted to tippex out the wrong numbers - problem is it’s a digital display so not possible! You learn to live with it though 🤷‍♀️

MargaretThursday · 05/02/2023 20:51

@Alphabet1spaghetti2

I think it's original 1970s one (hence being in Fahrenheit rather than Celsius). I suspect it was just calibrated wrongly when the current boiler was put in (previous occupants so I don't know).

hettiethehare · 05/02/2023 20:54

17/18 - our thermostat is ancient and has a dial with no dividing marks between 15 and 20 so it is a bit of a guess!

Notplayingball · 05/02/2023 20:56

23 at all times

OxanaVorontsova · 05/02/2023 20:58

17-18C here, in the north east. On for an hour before work then from about 4pm

The only time my heating isn't on through the night is if there's a power cut/boiler broken down.

Lcb123 · 03/02/2023 15:13

ours is off by default - don’t have heating on timer. If we feel cold (after layers / blankets) we might put it on at 16/17 for a bit. That’s fine for us!

How can you live like that! Mine is on all day around 20 or up a bit if just sitting around, maybe 21.5

20 is about my limit for central heating without feeling unwell, my preferred temperature would be 16 but my thermostat is set at 14 for cost reasons, and because DS runs hotter than me and I don't want him opening windows so I'm then heating the street.

You may have a point btu I doubt anyone has the thermostat in the fridge or next to the oven!
There are standard places to put them....
