I’ve give up smoking I’ve got a vape a good one I haven’t smoked since yesterday. This is so hard I really want one I want nothing more.
Im 36 and need to stop now I smoke up to 20 a day sometimes my skin has gone rubbish my hair is snapping my teeth have had better days.
my only reason for quitting at the moment is vanity and I’ve promised my children they keep nagging me to stop and their scared I will die young.
I know all this I know it’s bad for you but will I always miss it ? My morning coffee and fag my pudding fag I want to stop so much but I feel like something js missing will this go ?
Im avoiding the shop today I will buy some if I go in there today the worst bit is sometimes the man even gets my fags for me before I even ask lol it’s terrible I feel like I can’t go in if he does that I will have them help me see the benefits

Is the warning on the packet not enough ?

Eviebeans · 02/02/2023 05:36

Hypnotherapy worked for me

There's always one who is holier than thou isn't there? If you've nothing helpful to add then simply move on...

Well done op.

I'm also 36 and yesterday was supposed to be day 1 for me. I went down the nhs stop smoking route and have patches, supposed to be collecting inhalator today.

I had 2 yesterday, 8am and 8pm. I was still feeling quite proud until I came on this thread and was reminded how just 1 means you're at square 1 again (and now I want to throw in the towel!!!) I can't imagine being smoke free.

You're doing better than I am!!

Foxywood · 02/02/2023 06:11

Ime experience as an oldie - everyone thinks they can't stop smoking until, magically, they manage - once they are told they have lung cancer/ are at high risk of heart attack.

Ladybug14 · 02/02/2023 06:11

Every time you want a cigarette suck an ice cube

Tweetypie27 · 02/02/2023 07:21

Morning guys this is hard for me I felt depressed when I woke up like I’ve got nothing to look forward too. Silly how it makes you feel. Using vape and just taking it minute by minute this morning.

Bogeyes · 02/02/2023 07:24

Good morning. Don't weaken. You are doing well.

onepieceoflollipop · 02/02/2023 08:21

@Tweetypie27
You’re doing great
Yes minute by minute is best especially while you wake up properly and face the day
the first and worst day of this is over, well done x

lemons44 · 02/02/2023 08:52

I think it's normal to feel a bit up and down after quitting.
Just keep telling yourself you're not LOSING anything, you are only GAINING. Gaining your health back, gaining money, gaining your freedom.
You've done a full day already 💪🏼 well done!

Serenitespring · 02/02/2023 08:58

Start again today.
It’s normal to feel down in the dumps.
Its a form of grief, you have let something go that was a massive part of your life.
Stick with it.
You too Amandasummers, keep on!!
Distraction, diversion and determination!!!
You’ve done brilliantly yesterday.
No negative self talk only I can change I can do this!!
Every time the doubt/thought of a cigarette cones, I can do this I have changed.

Don’t even think about how you can’t imagine giving up - just choose not to have a cigarette and do it everytime the impulse/thought comes - and before you know it, time will have passed.
Tiny little baby steps will do it
Why not you
🌟

Mabelface · 02/02/2023 09:42

Keep it going, you're still doing this. Keep that vape charged. Day 2 for me too, and I really feel that I'm missing something! I'm not though, I'm gaining. Cravings pass and that's what I tell myself each time I have one.

Hups · 02/02/2023 09:54

You CAN do it op.
Lots of great advice here from ex smokers. Please heed it.
It really is mind over matter. You think you want a cig, your mind is telling you that you want a cig, so change your mindset. Every time you think ' I want a cig ' change that to ' I don't want a cig '
Change the way your mind thinks in the same way that you change the habit of having a cig say after eating, rather than reaching for a cig, reach for the dishcloth etc.
You CAN do this. It WILL get easier.
Your children deserve a healthy mum and your future grandchildren deserve a healthy grandma.
You're doing great so far, stick at it.
Good luck.

1952VincentBlackLightning · 02/02/2023 09:57

You CAN do it. Try and focus on how exciting it is to be free from something that takes your cash and harms you in the process. We're with you!

Findyourneutralspace · 02/02/2023 09:58

Tell the man in the shop you’ve quit. That way, you’ll be embarrassed to buy any more. Worked for me, but I still vape.

This - definitely tell the man in the shop that you've quit. Tell as many people as possible.

You're already on day 2, well done. Your DC will be so proud of you for stopping. My Mum smoked when I was young and I remember how happy I was when she stopped and our house didn't smell of smoke anymore.

NorthernWanker · 02/02/2023 10:47

My initial thought was how can anyone even afford to smoke these days

Ariela · 02/02/2023 11:04

Break the association with 'coffee' and 'fag' . Try a herbal tea. And a journal or diary and a nice pen (substitute fag shape for your fingers to do something). Keep a diary of how well you are doing so you can read back and encourage yourself to carry on.

Keep a running total, and book hair and nail appointments with the £££ you've saved.

Thanks everyone your helping me so much I felt so deflated but came on to read the msgs and feel motivated again. When I feel down I read these msgs and tips and keeps me going.
I’ve been to B & M got a new toothbrush toothpaste and some bottles of water and got some smoothies from Asda so had one of those and on my second bottle of water now.
love tea but it is my trigger at the moment hoping that stops so I can enjoy tea again soon.

The Allen Carr in person sessions work better than the book and they refund your money if it doesn’t work. Some people only have a short term click with the book.

it worked the second time with me. I read it, stopped for three months then started again and hated myself as the illusions that smoking is fun or delicious or anything other than gross and makes you feel like shut are gone. But the second time I read it a chapter a night, and really took it seriously and have not had a cigarette for 15 years. Was on 20 a day.

but it is true that the sessions have a higher success rate.

You will, you will also have lovely clean smelling hair, clothes and breath.
Come on Tweety, you can do this 💪

LaFemmeDamnee · 02/02/2023 12:41

A couple of people have mentioned free time. When my mum gave up smoking one of the best things was how much more present she became. When she smoked she was either off smoking or working out where she could go smoke. 20 a day, 5 minutes of smoking, 15 minutes of wanting to go smoke - that's 6 or 7 hours of a day given over to cigarettes. No cinema trips because you can't smoke. Shopping trips - out for a fag after every shop. It was so fucking boring. You'll be amazed by how much time you have soon. Good luck.
