Just woke up to this news this morning. It's just so incredibly heartbreaking for all involved. Seems to be happening so much more than ever these days

@mydogisthebest that is a separate subject?! What do we do about the drug trade or sexual abuse or genocide? It's irrelevant, you don't have a certain quota of being able to care about abhorrent crimes. Just because we are discussing one, does not mean we care any less about the other. Personally I think one person killed by a dog is too many, and one person killed by a parent is too many. Doing something about one does not mean we don't do something about the other.

@mydogisthebest

Let me guess, more Bully XL 'nanny dogs' to protect the kids from their parents?

Whoever compared dog owners to the NRA was bang on the money.

Now I know you’re on a wind up 😂😂😂

WFHbore2023 · 02/02/2023 15:16

@Teaandtoast3 do dogs with a bite history not have to be PTS? I always assumed it was a one strike situation?

But the number of children killed by a parent or step parent is far far higher than the number killed by dogs and yet nothing is done. I don't even really see as much outrage about that as there is about dogs.

As I said before, there have been 17 deaths caused by dogs since early 2020. Not all of them were children so even if 10 were children that is compared to AT LEAST 1 child a week being killed by a parent!

So 10 deaths by dogs in three years and at least 156 deaths by a parent in three years.

I do feel the outrage about dogs does not fit the actual reality

My friend's son has a cockapoo that has bitten her twice. Her son says it's because his dog can smell my friend's labrador on her and says " Just be glad he's not a big dog, mum!"

I said "Suppose it bites one of his children's friends?" My friend said "Oh, they make sure the dog is locked in the kitchen if other kids are around." So that's OK.....not.

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/02/2023 15:41

I never heard of an xl bully till I came on here. Not a dog I would like to come across.

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/02/2023 15:44

Teaandtoast3 · 02/02/2023 15:10

But I think more should consider it if a dog is reactive to the point of view that it can’t lead a normal life… especially dogs with biting history if unprovoked and 100% well.

I own a dog. I love dogs… but that’s my honest opinion.

When I was about 7, I got bit by my uncle's dog was only a small 1. He was a vet and took his own dog and put it down. I was heart broken at that age, it was only a small nip.

Not as ridiculous as trying to claim that deaths by dogs (which are completely preventable) aren't worth worrying about because some children are killed by their parents.

In terms of the outrage, which you claim doesn't exist for child killers?!?! Really?

Well I think your posts are the ridiculous ones. Yes most deaths by a dog are preventable, often by the parents. Deaths by step parent is also preventable by the actual parent using their brain and actually caring more about their child than a new boyfriend/girlfriend.

It's hardly "some" children killed by a parent when it is at least 1 a week is it?

Dogs and children can live happily together but the parents need to use some sense. They should not be getting dogs that they don't know the history of, they should not be getting big powerful breeds that are known to be a problem. They should not be letting their child pull the dog, kick the dog or let their child lay on the dog. Sick of seeing photos of young children laying on a big dog. They also should not leave the child and dog alone together.

Of course there is outrage for child killers but usually not to the extent of the dog haters in this country raving about a dog attack Dogs don't attack a child for fun or because they are sick psychos. Parents kill for those reasons along with being so needy they have to bring a new partner into the home and then turn a blind eye to any abuse that partner inflicts on their child or, even worse, joins in with the abuse.

No way on earth would I let anyone harm my dog. Shame some parents (far too many) don't feel the same about their children

Most vets will not put a healthy dog down.

Yep, people become vets because they love animals and want to help them.
When strays are handed to vets, they are scanned for chips, and then if the owners can not be found, they put out a social media campaign to find them.
I have heard of vets and other staff taking unclaimed animals home themselves.

They are not going to put a healthy animal down just because it is stray. I would hope any decent vet would push back on such a stupid rule. It wont happen though, as it is just a fantasy of the dog haters here.

They are terrifying in real life. Huge, ugly beasts with beady eyes. And I know there are the people who say all dogs are dangerous, but you’d rather run into golden retriever down a dark alley than one of those.

There are quite a few where I live, I don’t take my children to the park because of them running lose and I don’t let my toddler walk down the roads with me because they are her head height.

Can’t avoid a couple of them on the school run.

JustDanceAddict · 02/02/2023 17:08

Just dreadful. My heart sank when I read that yesterday- so sad and preventable.
My v tall teen son was set upon by a big dog a couple of years ago. The dog chased him & reared up - son was minding his own business walking down the road. Owner called the dog back, luckily. Subsequent to that the dog attacked a woman in the local park and was banned from the park. Idk what happened after that but I hope it was PTS. The owner tried to make loads of BS excuses up why the dog attacked the woman (was all played out on nextdoor app).

I don't think they are ugly at all. Also not that big compared to a Great Dane or Irish Wolfhound.

I love big dogs though.

I do think we’ve got used to small dogs now, lots of these ‘oodles being crossed with miniature poodles.

I saw an XL bully where I live. Massive muscular black thing. Had cropped ears (which I am sure is illegal here). It had the most velvety looking coat though. If it did not look so intimidating (the owner did too), then I would have asked to say hello.

Yes, all these cockapoo teddy bear looking things... all named Teddy too!
A dog groomer was on the radio and said they are the worst for biting.

I'm a dog owner I have absolutely no problem with strict licence being brought in , paying for these licences and I also never have mine off lead in public ... I do pay to hire a private dog park field because I chose to keep dogs and therefore won't throw them at the general public to accept , it's my responsibility to exercise them and if I want to walk amongst the public out walking in the woods etc I fully agree that mine should be on a lead and away from everyone ... adult to child and also other dogs ...
I don't see why any responsible dog owner wouldn't want licences or to have their dog / dogs under control at all times
Anything is a weapon , dogs have their own thinking brain it's the owners job to look after that responsibly and keep both people and them dogs safe

I really wish more dog owners were like you and some other sensible owners who have commented on this thread in favour of restrictions/licenses. I would be so much more comfortable around dogs and be able to enjoy my local parks and even my flat building if more had
this mentality.

That poor child I can’t imagine how they felt in their final moments. Horrendous.

I haven’t read the full thread yet so it might have been mentioned but there was another fatal dog attack the other day. The victim in this case was an elderly woman. It’s absolutely shocking.

More get people get bit than killed.

bellamountain · 03/02/2023 00:29

It's not just people wanting to look tough who buy bull breeds, it's every day people. They just lack any kind of common sense. Their need for a dog (to make themselves feel better) outweighs others around them. If their beloved pet dies, they think nothing of replacing it with another dog a month later. Dogs are a commodity to them. There will be countless stories on the news of children who have been mauled to death but they will argue it's the media scaremongering (even when faced with hard facts). After all, their dog is the perfect 'nanny dog'.

I am a dog owner (golden retriever) but would never leave my dog alone with my children. Dogs need plenty of exercise. A walk round the streets and your regular local park imo isn't enough. They need woodlands, fields and open land. And don't have a dog with lock jaws in the same house as children.

I’m sorry I should have specified. I don’t mean a little nip. I mean when a dog properly bites and draws blood.

Teaandtoast3 · 03/02/2023 00:32

And I am sorry @vodkaredbullgirl that you had to go through that. I wouldn’t class a small nip and an actual bite with blood which pierced the skin quite the same. My dog can get overexcited and nip when we play but she’s never pierced the skin, never draw blood and when I yip she’s so incredibly sorry visibly.

Puppies nip too. They are young and still learning. Would be nuts to say they should be PTS for that.
