The bodycam footage has been released.

I'm in two minds about whether to watch it or not. I don't think I'll ever get the George Floyd one out of my head.

What is the problem with male police officers? Racism, violent or misogynistic tendencies (the latter more specific to other recent cases). I just don't know. And I don't know how the police can build back trust on either side of the Atlantic.

I think it's interesting that the police chief here is black and female. Yes the officers have been sacked/charged straight away. Maybe that is to do with who is in charge rather than them being black?

noblegiraffe · 29/01/2023 09:23

Black or white, they were all men, again.

Marmite17 · 29/01/2023 11:36

The deeply worrying thing about this is that the police wore body cams and clearly believed that they could brutalise and ultimately beat this man to death with impunity.
Couldn't quite process what I was seeing. It was just a traffic stop for suspected reckless driving. Completely senseless. I can't imagine a society where you can be on your way home one minute and set upon by sub human thugs the next, in the name of policing.
Utterly awful. RIP Tyre Nichols.

That's a good point. Now for there to be more like her in charge so that the rest of these animals who commit these crimes can meet the same fate.

Marmite17 · 29/01/2023 12:08

It is promising that the police chief took immediate action. The problem is clearly systemic.

Unfortunately it seems she was fired from her previous position in Atlanta after apparently telling officers not to investigate the husband of a police officer, who was later found guilty of possessing child porn.

You can't trust anyone.

Catlady2021 · 29/01/2023 17:45

The man had been restrained and posed no risk when he was punched and kicked. Absolutely disgraceful. It’s definitely murder. No justification.

Police are supposed to protect us. And look at these thugs. They were also that stupid that they knew they were being filmed too.

Catlady2021 · 29/01/2023 17:51

Someone mentioned the Met in 2011 during the riots. Please don’t compare the two. This was a sadistic and brutal murder.

I was very close to where things kicked off in 2011, it was quite scary. The Met did what they could ( with other forces supporting). When they’re in riot gear, they’re pushing back rioters and dispersing the crowds.

They had to react, and no one dies during the riots. The Met have their faults but in 2011 they did their job.

ThreeFeetTall · 29/01/2023 18:21

@Catlady2021
I think you might be forgetting the trigger behind the 2011 riots...

ThreeFeetTall · 29/01/2023 18:21

@dreamingbohemian
Urgh, that so depressing Sad

RosaGallica · 29/01/2023 18:28

I watched half of it. I don’t understand what they pulled him over for in the first place - does anyone actually know? I couldn’t believe the level of aggression I was seeing from police with someone who appeared to be cooperative.

hattie43 · 29/01/2023 18:30

This whole thing is beyond comprehension.

JumpingSpider · 29/01/2023 18:32

Maybe the police does need to be a graduate profession like nursing and spend time teaching professional values as well as having a values based recruitment process

Do you really believe the people who killed Tyre Nichols probably wouldn't of done it if they had attended higher education teaching them values?

Geepee71 · 29/01/2023 19:20

It's horrific, I saw the video as it was shown on a news channel, it's heartbreaking and awful, it's really upset me so no, I don't recommend you watch it.

Enough info has been provided, to know how bad it Is.

You wonder how much goes on without cameras to pick it up.

His family deserve justice.

Those responsible deserve to rot.

No, but it might have weeded them out over the period of a three year degree. Plenty of nursing students, etc get thrown off the course for displaying non professional values during the course.

Throwncrumbs · 29/01/2023 19:48

It’s not racist as the 5 cops were all black!

I’ve been thinking about this. Regardless of their race they work in an organisation which is systemically racist. I wonder how much of that rubs off subconsciously.? And that when they put on their uniforms they don’t identify with black non police officers anymore. Almost that they become a raceless police officer?

Who over the years has being subtly exposed to the drip, drip message of black people are trouble, black people are criminals, black people are dangerous, black people don’t deserve respect? 🤷‍♀️

Recruitment has plummeted in the US, standards have dropped just to fill spots. Iirc one of the five already had some sort of felony on record.

There’s no way you can raise standards even higher since they already cannot find enough candidates.

It’s very sad. I see private security become more of a common thing in America through HOAs because of this, it will become like many other American countries in this regard.

Throwncrumbs · 29/01/2023 19:48

As has already been pointed out on the thread - it's possible to be racist against other members of your own race. Just like it's possible for women to be misogynistic.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 30/01/2023 08:06

Actually @JumpingSpider said it better.

Just4ThisThread · 30/01/2023 08:38

I understand this video is distressing, but I suggest watching it and asking more questions.

Like the black officers were fired and charged but not the white one who also appeared to be an active participant in the brutality.

Tyres family have specifically asked why the white officer hasn’t been fired, arrested and charged.

“There was a white officer that was tasing my son and we don’t understand how come his name was not put out there or mentioned in this whole fiasco,” Nichols’ stepfather, Rodney Wells, said in a recent interview.

MintyFreshOne · 30/01/2023 09:59

Maybe he will be charged with something later but he wasn’t involved in the beating death as he remained behind.

Its really reaching to say they had some sort of internalised racism when they live in a majority black city with a PD led by a black woman, as making the local force reflect the diversity of the community was supposed to help stop police brutality.

It’s likely less to do with their skin colour and more about their low character.

And currently few decent people want to be cops. Standards already have dropped to get more recruits, so it’s very hard to see where they will go from here.

So we shouldn’t ask the question?

This man’s family have every right to the full story, don’t you dare shut them down as the subject of race makes you uncomfortable.

Well telling black officers to stop being racist isn’t really going to solve the problem imo

nor is the assumption all police officers are racist by default (then we get into solutions like defunding/dismantling police etc, which few really want to see)
