The bodycam footage has been released.

I'm in two minds about whether to watch it or not. I don't think I'll ever get the George Floyd one out of my head.

What is the problem with male police officers? Racism, violent or misogynistic tendencies (the latter more specific to other recent cases). I just don't know. And I don't know how the police can build back trust on either side of the Atlantic.

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 28/01/2023 13:08

one officer seem to be clapping another on the back as though saying 'well done'

Yes, which speaks to a culture in the whole force, not just a problem with an individual officer or officers. No fear of colleagues seeing what they have done.

MintyFreshOne · 28/01/2023 13:10

Even in this case, people are already noticing that when white police officers kill a black person, usually they are just suspended, there's a whole long investigation, maybe they get put on trial and sometimes they get off. In this case, where the police are all black, they're immediately fired and charged with murder

No, the worst case I ever came across was the Daniel Shaver killing. The police officer responsible for that cold-blooded murder was rehired by the force so he could get his pension. All white folk btw.

Tony Timpa was killed in pretty much the same way as George Floyd. He was white and the cop most responsible for
his death literally got a promotion.

People want these cases to fit their priors tho

Sorry I don't understand genuine question. Why advised not to co operate? I thought black boys especially were advised to be compliant with police? Not that it is obviously protective but surely the police get even worse if someone refuses to co operate?! What have I missed?

Obviously this is the advice after arrest. Don’t ever cooperate or speak to police without legal assistance. In America anyway

I forget some people still live in high-trust societies :)

MistyFrequencies · 28/01/2023 13:15

I saw some of it on Sky news and im haunted by it all day. He screams for his mum broke me. SO many officers stood around and didnt administer medical attention while hes dying on the street. I just cant comprehend what they are thinking. Its incredibly distressing.

dreamingbohemian · 28/01/2023 13:18

@MintyFreshOne Are you denying that racism plays any role in police brutality and murders in the US?

hotpotlover · 28/01/2023 13:29

Absolutely disgusting. Absolute scum.

Cocolapew · 28/01/2023 13:42

I read that his mums house was close by, less than 100 yards and that's why he was calling to her.
When the officers were standing around after one says something like " I think he was trying to go for a gun".
Another then says that he went for his.
The first one then says" yeah he had his hand on ~name~ gun."
They are getting the story straight with each other without actually saying that's what they were doing.
It's just so horrific, he must have been so scared.

People tend to call out to their mums, when their life is under threat.

When my ex beat the shit out of me, I remember me calling out to my mum, even though she was thousand of miles away.

BubziOwl · 28/01/2023 14:38

And it begs the question of whether this was the first time?

Yep. I refuse to believe that five men went from being totally decent humans to cold blooded, brutal murderers in the space of a day. There absolutely will be past offences of some description for all of them.

noblegiraffe · 28/01/2023 14:40

I hope their whatsapp groups and general communications are being scrutinised to find the workplace culture behind it.

saraclara · 28/01/2023 14:48

I only saw the first part. He entirely cooperated, and he spoke very calmly. Yet they treated him as if he was uncooperative and a threat. From the very beginning it seems as though they wanted a fight. That him not giving them one was almost offending them.

He only ran away when they pepper sprayed him (for absolutely no reason) and were about to tazer him (or had, but missed?). And at that point I'd have tried to escape too.

DaVariance · 28/01/2023 14:53

Why did they stop him in the first place ?

DaVariance · 28/01/2023 14:54

I can't bear to watch the footage because thought of what he went through brings me to tears

MarshaBradyo · 28/01/2023 14:56

I don’t watch these and didn’t with George video

It sounds horrific

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 28/01/2023 14:56

Hard enough to read. Horrible! And then hearing about the Paramedics arriving who didn't nothing for ages...he was seen as so worthless! It's murder

MadameDe · 28/01/2023 15:15

DaVariance · 28/01/2023 14:53

Why did they stop him in the first place ?

Apparently, he was pulled over for reckless driving. Whether that's true or not is up for debate. They clearly just wanted to beat someone up.

In some ways I'm glad I watched it. With George Floyd there was so much shit spoken after the event to try and cover up how bad it actually was. To have seen the footage is to have witnessed the truth.

petermaddog · 28/01/2023 15:17

do not watch
see tyres photos instead

There is something so heartbreaking about this - for everyone who's been in a situation where they've called out for their mum.

I hope you're in a better situation now. Xx

It’s heartbreaking, understandable but so tough

dreamingbohemian · 28/01/2023 15:24

@hotpotlover Flowers

Yes it's very common
Soldiers dying on the battlefield is another heartbreaking example

The worst thing here is that she was only a few blocks away, and had no idea her son was being murdered so close to home.
She is being remarkably strong in calling for peace. I'm not sure I could do it.

Intrepidescape · 28/01/2023 15:40

dreamingbohemian · 28/01/2023 00:58

I can't bear to watch it. He cries out for his mom while they beat him to death.

I do think it's important that it's made public but that doesn't mean everyone has to watch it.

Not every cop is corrupt or racist or brutal but I think police forces as institutions are just incredibly fucked up. What is it, 1000 Met officers under investigation? That's insane.

The cops who killed this man were the same race. I’m not sure why you mentioned racism.

MintyFreshOne · 28/01/2023 15:49

dreamingbohemian · 28/01/2023 13:18

@MintyFreshOne Are you denying that racism plays any role in police brutality and murders in the US?

See this is incredibly divisive. Police brutality is a huge issue in America and affects everybody.

Have any of you ever heard of Hannah Fizer, a young woman who was pulled over for speeding on her way to work and shot and killed by a police officer?

The police officer was fired and never saw jail time. He claimed that he thought she had a gun (no gun was ever found). Not to put too fine a point on it, but she was white.

amp.kansascity.com/opinion/readers-opinion/guest-commentary/article256876622.html

But I guess she is the wrong colour so you’ve never heard of her? And overlook the fact that the cop was never punished for it.

blueshoes · 28/01/2023 15:53

I cannot watch it. I know what it is. I am in tears every time just at the thought. His mother. Her son.

dreamingbohemian · 28/01/2023 16:02

@MintyFreshOne So you're an All Lives Matter kind of person. Got it.

Everyone knows that police kill white people too. I'm not sure what sharing stories of white victims (and only white victims) is supposed to prove. It just shows you don't understand the impact of racism on police brutality, if you think it means that only black people get murdered.
