Tyre Nichols

The bodycam footage has been released.

I'm in two minds about whether to watch it or not. I don't think I'll ever get the George Floyd one out of my head.

What is the problem with male police officers? Racism, violent or misogynistic tendencies (the latter more specific to other recent cases). I just don't know. And I don't know how the police can build back trust on either side of the Atlantic.

Rockingcloggs · 28/01/2023 09:58

Although I think it's incredibly important that the footage is 'out there', I won't be watching it. I can already imagine just how horrific it is and I feel so very much for his family having view it.

Notnonotno · 28/01/2023 12:07

I feel so disturbed by this. So deeply disturbed. I feel like my brain can't actually process it.
I have no words. I keep seeing his face in my mind and I don't think the image will leave. I don't even know the guy. God knows how his family and friends must feel. Then the black community in the States.....Every single human being on planet earth should be heartbroken and angry about it. It was unprovoked. It was abuse of power. Beyond brutal.

May you rest in eternal peace Tyre Nichols.

This is horrendous. Met Police have their issues, but I don’t think you can compare this. This is so beyond. It’s insane.

noblegiraffe · 28/01/2023 12:21

Absolutely horrendous. Why does this keep happening? Do they not fear any consequences? They were wearing body cams! That poor man, his poor family knowing that they stood around chatting and fist bumping about how they'd just beaten a guy to a pulp while he needed urgent medical attention.

And here we keep finding out about police officers who are rapists and wife-beaters, so we can't have any sense of superiority over this.

watchfulwishes · 28/01/2023 12:28

I can't understand what is going wrong, so badly wrong, that this keeps happening.

I have never been able to understand that level of brutality.

I am so tired of being told it is just a few bad apples. I don't trust the UK police so much after all the Met stuff, and would feel even worse if I was in the US.

I keep thinking of his mum Sad

We mustn't minimise what is going on in the Met just because this incident is so shocking. The Met situation is deeply concerning.

Reclaimtheoutdoors · 28/01/2023 12:31

It’s awful. I won’t watch the video. Heartbreaking to hear he was calling out for his mum. What brutality what cruelty 😣

HannaHat · 28/01/2023 12:34

Saw a little bit of it, really hope I don't see any more 😭
Absolutely vicious bastards.
God love Tyre and his family 💔

dreamingbohemian · 28/01/2023 12:36

There is a long history of police brutality in the UK (remember the Brixton riots? the 2011 riots?) but I think one of the main reasons you don't see more deaths as in the US is simply that police here are not as well armed. You don't have ordinary cops carrying guns and tasers all the time. I'm not saying this is the only reason, but I think it's an important one.

However as part of the move to increase police powers here, I believe it is now easier for police in England to carry tasers (not sure about guns). This is something that should really concern us all, given what we're learning now about how many police are violent and abusive.

noblegiraffe · 28/01/2023 12:37

Not having armed police is a good point, but this man wasn't shot, he was beaten to death.

MintyFreshOne · 28/01/2023 12:42

Big problem is that decent men will not want to be police officers, and haven’t for many years now, so who is left? A bunch of degenerates.

I said during the George Floyd debacle that the problem isn’t really racism, though it’s convenient for the establishment to cast it that way. It was always police brutality.

In America you are well advised never to cooperate with them and never have a large amount of cash on you. The police simply are not to be trusted, and it’s a big reason why the gun culture flourishes. If the police can’t or won’t protect you, who will?

Sorry I don't understand genuine question. Why advised not to co operate? I thought black boys especially were advised to be compliant with police? Not that it is obviously protective but surely the police get even worse if someone refuses to co operate?! What have I missed?

dreamingbohemian · 28/01/2023 12:47

He was tasered, or they were trying to tase him. Quite a lot of deaths by police are either bc of tasers or begin with tasers.

It is obviously completely horrible to be tasered, it tends to make people freak out and try to get away, and then the police shoot them or beat them to death because they're 'resisting'.

This just happened recently, it's awful:

DesertRose64 · 28/01/2023 12:49

I won’t watch it. Just knowing Tyre was crying out for his mum is enough horror.

dreamingbohemian · 28/01/2023 12:51

The problem is both. Why does it need to be one or the other?

Even in this case, people are already noticing that when white police officers kill a black person, usually they are just suspended, there's a whole long investigation, maybe they get put on trial and sometimes they get off. In this case, where the police are all black, they're immediately fired and charged with murder.

I mean obviously that is the right call but for some reason it usually takes a lot longer for that to happen when the cops are white.

The people I know who have cars in the US have cameras pointing inside them and know not to get out if the police pull them over.

I was going to say this.

This case does not mean racism is not a factor in many ways in many atrocities.

Obviously this is the advice after arrest. Don’t ever cooperate or speak to police without legal assistance. In America anyway

Notnonotno · 28/01/2023 13:02

Wasn't obvious to me at all which is why I asked. But ok I understand your point now you have clarified. Thank you.

noblegiraffe · 28/01/2023 13:04

I guess black officers are as capable of 'racial profiling' of suspects as white officers.

Tyre was beaten to death for a traffic stop for 'reckless driving' and it's not clear from the videos what the problem with his driving was.

That sort of 'stop' certainly seems to happen far more often to black people than white people.

This is the approach I would take now even in the UK. Which is actually really sad.

The people I know who have cars in the US have cameras pointing inside them and know not to get out if the police pull them over.

So then what? Other than it all being recorded what would happen if they refused to leave the car? I don't understand.

Notnonotno · 28/01/2023 13:04

If the car is locked you can not be beaten, at least until they have broken in.

You therefore have time to call someone.

Nanatokidsdogshampsters · 28/01/2023 13:07

I haven't watched the video but saw a still where one officer seem to be clapping
another on the back as though saying 'well done'
