The bodycam footage has been released.

I'm in two minds about whether to watch it or not. I don't think I'll ever get the George Floyd one out of my head.

What is the problem with male police officers? Racism, violent or misogynistic tendencies (the latter more specific to other recent cases). I just don't know. And I don't know how the police can build back trust on either side of the Atlantic.

If the car is locked you can not be beaten, at least until they have broken in.

You therefore have time to call someone.

Who to call though?! I mean this genuinely if the police pulled you over and they are a threat to you, who you gonna call to save you when they standing there? A lawyer?! Is that the thinking?

@MintyFreshOne So you're an All Lives Matter kind of person. Got it.

Everyone knows that police kill white people too. I'm not sure what sharing stories of white victims (and only white victims) is supposed to prove. It just shows you don't understand the impact of racism on police brutality, if you think it means that only black people get murdered.

The point is police brutality affects everyone. If you think it will only happen to someone else, you won’t work too hard to end it. But the fact is, this can absolutely happen to anyone.

That’s the point I want to see driven home.

Survey99 · 28/01/2023 17:35

I watched the videos and the completely unprovoked and unnecessary actions of those pack animals that called themselves police officers, and their whole demeanour recounting, congratulating themselves and lighting a cigarette after the attack, no one helping as Tyre was lying there dying is horrific. Throughout the videos Tyre was compliant, at times he seemed to be trying to calm the situation down and I just couldn't understand why they kept attacking him. I hope they rot in jail.

I don't know where Tyre's mum finds the strength to speak with such dignity and poise.

Notnonotno · 28/01/2023 17:50

I am absolutely devastated by the senseless murder of this poor, innocent man. I've been on and off crying all day today because of it.

I can't put into words....

Rotting in prison feels too good for those scumbags who are responsible. I have to believe they will burn in hell for all of eternity.

Prayers for Tyre's family and friends.

It does, but it happens to black people significantly more often and that should not be minimised. Also take a look at the punishment of the black officers involved in this. No time off with pay, no waiting until there’s been an investigation, instant dismissal. Not the way white officers are treated.

It does not happen to Black Americans more often. More unarmed white people are killed by cops.

Now you’ll say that, well, it’s because there are more white ppl in America.

True, but then you could say when examined as a function of police encounters, it looks pretty even.

HOWEVER you look at it, it is an issue that impacts everyone in the US and we should treat it that way. Then you will get the political will to actually do something about it.

What you shouldn’t do is try to take a police brutality story like this and shoehorn a racial angle into it, so it will neatly fit your priors.

I mean, don’t you think it’s a good thing that these cops were immediately punished? Do you really think a group of white cops reenacting the wedding scene from Kill Bill would have been protected here? Or do you just FEEL that would be the case?

It’s like you forgot that white lady who shot Dante Wright was arrested within the week (iirc she confused her gun with a taser). There are plenty of cases like that which don’t fit your priors.

Don’t you actually want to solve this problem?

The cops who killed this man were the same race. I’m not sure why you mentioned racism.

It's possible to be racist against other members of your own race. Just like it's possible for women to be misogynist.

dreamingbohemian · 28/01/2023 19:58

Black Americans are murdered disproportionately by the police. There are any numbers of studies that show this.

In particular, if you look at unarmed people killed by police, black Americans are three times more likely to be killed than unarmed white people.

This is not 'shoehorning a racial angle into it', those are cold hard facts.

Shame on you for coming onto a thread about another murdered young black man and insisting there is nothing racial about police brutality in the US. It affects everyone but not equally and if you are not willing to recognise that, you are part of the problem.

dreamingbohemian · 28/01/2023 20:02

And if you're going to trying to exploit Daunte Wright's case, at least spell his name right

Oh and what happened to that white cop who murdered him?

"Potter was sentenced to two years in prison, serving sixteen months with eight months of supervised release. The typical sentence for first-degree manslaughter in Minnesota is more than seven years in prison, with a maximum set at fifteen years."

But sure, justice was served right.

ladymacbeth · 28/01/2023 20:18

40% of male police officers in the US have admitted to domestic violence. Think how many didn't admit it. That's a horrendous amount of violence in roles with weapons

purpledalmation · 28/01/2023 20:19

Its shocking and awful. You can't even say racism so what possessed them to beat a man to death?

I would expect you to be ashamed to look at a clear case of police brutality and see racism. This sort of divisiveness helps no one—especially when unarmed Native Americans are statistically the MOST likely to die in a police encounter, and Asian Americans the least.

I find it very odd you get angry that I spelled someone’s name wrong from my memory. But you probably hadn’t even heard of Hannah Fizer nor even clicked on the link I shared, did you?

You wondered why these officers were immediately dealt with — isn’t that what we should want?

And as I pointed out, it’s not just black cops, a white female cop got booked immediately for killing someone, and she clearly didn’t mean to kill Daunte, she was just incompetent, unlike these vile men.

Police departments are taking these cases more serious, this is a positive step to be encouraged, like the use of body cams. More of course, needs to be done, like abolishing police unions and more emphasis on de-escalation tactics, among many other things that people more knowledgeable than me on the issue have suggested.

dreamingbohemian · 28/01/2023 21:59

Ah that old chestnut, where acknowledging racism = being divisive

Filling up the bingo card nicely

Rate of fatal police shootings U.S. 2015-2022, by ethnicity
Published by Statista Research Department, Jan 2, 2023

The rate of fatal police shootings in the United States shows large differences based on ethnicity. Among Black Americans, the rate of fatal police shootings between 2015 and December 2022 stood at 5.9 per million of the population per year, while for white Americans, the rate stood at 2.4 fatal police shootings per million of the population per year.
you are so very wrong, so either admit you have a problem or leave it alone.

Geetars · 28/01/2023 22:10

How come there is just soo much racism in the US? From the Police? Does this really reflect mainstream society? It’s just another reason not to visit the US… (That and that half the population voted for a deluded, misogynistic rapey idiot).

I can’t bear to read or watch the killing video, the George Floyd video was horrible enough.

Wrote a long post that you didn’t engage with. Fine.

Five black cops beat an unarmed black man to death, this death is on them and their department, and you know it

Just go play bingo

Kerrybemmy · 28/01/2023 22:57

The officers are telling Tyre to put his hands behind his back even when they have him restrained, it's a deliberate tactic, to make him look like he violently struggling so they can justify to their bosses why they attacked him. Notice the body cam footage never properly shows the kicks and blows, it's deliberate to obscure what's going on. Unfortunately the pole camera caught them in the act.

Well given that you've shown zero understanding of racism in the US, to the point of ignoring statistics that people have patiently supplied, what's the point in engaging with you?

I genuinely don't mean that in a nasty way. I just think it's clear now that there's no point.

Yes in a lot of these videos, when they come out, you hear the victims saying things like, But I am on the ground! I'm not resisting! I'm doing what you want!

Body cams alone cannot solve the problem.

AbsolutelyFuckingSick · 28/01/2023 23:10

The US and UK are as bad as each other when recruiting these monsters. Any institution where men are expected to protect their "brothers" are insidious. That goes for police, forces etc. Men are the problem, regardless of race. Give a simple man a little power and he will fly Angry

I think that was their undoing.

I think he was shouting mum because he was so close to his mums house. He was clearly running there to be safe. Absolutely heartbreaking.
