1 - No, we haven’t asked you to come over for a meal in ages, no, I don’t care how many hints you drop, it’s falling on deaf ears.
I don’t expect you to help prepare or cook when you’re here BUT I do expect you to supervise your kids, not plonk down on the sofa and completely ignore them. Accidents may happen but if you actually looked after them instead of scrolling through your phones, we wouldn’t have had a house plant tipped over the carpet, used toilet roll and wee on the toilet floor, orange juice poured in the dogs bowl plus numerous others. Oh and by the way, we’ve never been invited over to your house in the eight years you’ve lived there!

2 - Im sorry your daughter would rather spend time with her gran but for god’s sake be honest, you spent the first ten years of her life bouncing from one disastrous relationship to another because you were desperate for a bloke. You put them in front of her needs. Her gran might not be perfect but at least she was there for her.

You are rich, so why have you started passing off your old tat and unwanted presents to us, even when we were there when you got the bottle of green grog, and then gave to DH for a 60th birthday present.Your memory does not allow you to remember who gave you what thing, which means that too often, people are given things they have given you! My birthday present is recycled old tat, and the one you got for your only grandaughter. But all the offspring aren't treated the same. Dsis has her rent paid every month, enabling her and her feckless husband to keep horses and animals they can't afford, and you actually pay for her private dental plan for a dentist she never goes to as she lives on an island and the dentist is on the mainland. The same money would pay for me to go a gym, which would help my health condition. But all you want me to do is sue my previous place of work for negligence resulting in a disability. This would destroy what remains of my fragile mental health, but that doesn't seem to matter to you. Have you forgotten that dsis couldn't come to your 80th birthday, cos dogs and horses, and we did our best to make the day special for you. Dsis has recently been for a visit, because she was bored, and suddenly 'dogs and horses' not an issue. Why are you sinking all this cash into the child who plainly only cares about herself? Do you think dsis will advocate for you if you need it? I suspect that will fall on me.

Another one from me:
I know it is important to keep in touch with you and to be available when you want to visit as you are the father of my step granddaughter, but actually you cannot just announce that you are going to visit without checking with me first! I work too and cannot just take time off on a Monday at short notice because you are coming down here on holiday and have decided it would be nice to pop in!
(Disclaimer - they have to travel 5 hours to get here and we are very happy to see them, but I am also trying to juggle other things in April and have had to rearrange other important family things. And I still don't know what time they are coming and I can't take time off work)

Yes FIL we are struggling massively financially because our mortgage has gone up massively, your son is on disability benefits which won't go up and we may have to sell up which means I'll lose my business. But you just turn a blind eye and talk about the crap you're going to spend all your thousands on and never use, whilst we go under..

DH has told him about our finances, that we're struggling with bills, using the foodbank, and not being able to pay our full mortgage payment each month but it seems to go over his head.He's told him how much we'd need to help us out although he hasn't asked him outright; however, if FIL can't work out that our situation is pretty dire then he must be a bit dense! He'll then proceed to tell DH about this particular classic car he's going to buy ( but will hardly ever use then sell at a loss in 6months time, which is what he always does ).DH has an older brother who hasn't worked for years. He owns 3 properties which he rents out, as well as the one he lives in.He has a pretty large pension that he's never claimed because he doesn't need the money. He's never married or had kids and his own house is falling down around his ears because he's too bloody lazy to fix it, yet FIL goes on about him maybe not having enough money to fix his house up and maybe he'll give him some to help out!
