Told not to chat so much or hum at work.

So today I was told I'm too chatty at work.
Sometimes I hum apparently. The role is a busy active one with customers and colleagues. One lady dislikes me so
reported me.The thing is I do work while I chat and I've always been like this.
I'm even thinking of seeking an ADHD diagnosis and I'm quite hyperactive.
I'm not upset by the personality assassination yet I don't know how to stop.
How can I stop realistically?
Another boss said I was cheerful and like a breath of fresh air.😁

Humming is naturally soothing - it stimulates the vagus nerve/parasympathetic nervous system. I'd imagine that for someone with ADHD it's naturally become how you regulate your emotions. If you're going to try and reduce one, I'd go for chatting rather than humming.

whatisforteamum · 18/01/2023 20:24

I think the humming must be slight. No one has EVER mentioned it in my life.
Chatting yes.
The person who reported me applied for the post I have.
They have tried to make my life miserable which is why they resorted to personality traits.
Thank you for the feedback though.Someone chatting in an office environment would be difficult for me too.

Pereniss thank you that makes sense.

Goodness I feel the lifeblood drain out of me.
I feel anxious just knowing someone almost made me lose my job over it.

OP posts:
NewBootsAndRanty · 19/01/2023 15:15

Did you actually really almost lose your job?
I remeber your other thread about probation and a lot of catastrophizing.

Fwiw the humming would also drive me insane. Chatting to customers while you're serving them is one thing, if you're being chatty with your colleagues and distracting or annoying them that's a different kettle of fish.

Ohgodthepain · 19/01/2023 15:26

Chatting is fine, incessant chatting not so much. We have a colleague who tells us every single minute detail of what her cat does, it's excruciating.

whatisforteamum · 19/01/2023 15:46

Newbootsandranty I knew something was amiss.
I knew they were gossiping as I overheard them.I didn't know the toxic one reported me and it escalated to area manager.

Reported you for humming/chatting?

How did that get escalated to the area manager?
Did your own manager not attempt a resolution?

MichelleScarn · 19/01/2023 16:05

Has this been confirmed by your and area manager? A complaint solely about humming escalated to that level?

whatisforteamum · 19/01/2023 17:25

Yes I know.😪
The toxic colleague has been told to go through the correct channels in future. Some other bits that my boss said were v .petty.
They still had to tell me.
I haven't had a job chat like that in several decades .

OP posts:
NewBootsAndRanty · 19/01/2023 17:27

Do you mean she reported you to the area manager directly, rather than it being escalated?

Killingmytime · 19/01/2023 17:50

Nope. I knew a hummer. One day I nearly cried because I just couldn’t take it anymore

Killingmytime · 19/01/2023 17:53

whatisforteamum · 18/01/2023 19:36

Yes must be hard to work with someone with any type of disorder. Anyone who isn't neurotypical should stay indoors.

I’m autistic, now being assessed for adhd.
you would still make me want to quit I’m afraid. I would not being able to do my job with constant humming.
I’ve had to reduce my ‘chatter’ as it was a lot and I knew annoyed other people.

Viviennemary · 19/01/2023 17:55

Humming must be very irritating for your colleagues. Too much chatting can also be looked upon as irritating and not very professional.

whatisforteamum · 19/01/2023 17:58

I think the humming is minor.no one has EVER mention it before.

OP posts:
NewBootsAndRanty · 19/01/2023 18:02

Well it's been mentioned now 🤷‍♀️
Did you just get reported directly to the area manager then?

ArcaneWireless · 19/01/2023 18:15

You might think the humming is minor. Sadly your colleagues may not.

Just because they didn’t report it using the correct channels does not make it any less of a problem for them.

saraclara · 19/01/2023 18:25

I've had to stop going to a new hobby group that I would have otherwise loved and continued with, had it not been for one person who never stops talking, and who puts on silly voices to do so.
Clearly others can cope with her (just about - I know that others find it irritating) but I can't. If I worked alongside her I'd have to apply for something else.

whatisforteamum · 21/01/2023 08:12

Saraclara that is a shame.I wouldnt like someone putting on voices.I do acknowledge we are all different though.
In the workplace I think being energetic and positive is good where the job is the same thing each day.Small talk passes the time.

OP posts:
whatisforteamum · 21/01/2023 08:14

Killingmytime what other ADHD symptoms do you have if you don't mind me asking.

OP posts:
CatsTheWayToDoIt · 21/01/2023 08:19

I couldn’t work with someone who was humming! Can you not make a conscious decision to stop that? You sound nice but humming is incredibly irritating.

whatisforteamum · 21/01/2023 08:25

Cats yes now I've been told I do it I will try.

OP posts:
NewBootsAndRanty · 21/01/2023 12:30

Small talk might well pass the time for you, can you not realise that it is potentially incredibly irritating for everyone around you?

But who are you talking with/to? The customers or colleagues?

Johnisafckface · 21/01/2023 13:27

Humming I couldn’t tolerate, I’d probably report it.

the chatting wouldn’t bother me too much as I don’t mind it as background noise as long as it didn’t get too loud.
