We're trapped in the house!

A hedge has fallen in front of the gate and we cannot get out of the front garden. And Amazon cannot get in to deliver the chain saw we ordered a couple of days ago when we noticed the hedge was starting to look a bit out of control and the branches were too thick for the hedge trimmer.

I'm thinking if we use the hedge trimmer on the smaller branches and try a normal saw on the thicker branches we might be able to get it small enough to climb over/through but we cannot start until it is light and it doesn't get light until after DD leaves for school.

I can't tell the school the truth can I? They won't believe DD cannot get to school because she can't get out of the front garden, will they?

Right…but now you are claiming to be stuck in your house when you clearly have all the tools to resolve that. You could have sorted this in max two hours today, barring any mobility issues. Was there really no one you could ring with a set of ladders to get over the fence to help you if you couldn’t do it yourself? Sorry again OP but I cannot believe with the kit you have at home you couldn’t resolve beyond the fact that you simply cba 🤷‍♀️

Did you not read her posts? By the time she realised it was dark they are being sensible and waiting till daylight

WonderingWanda · 16/01/2023 06:48

I hope you manage to escape at some point today op. I'm Guessing you were being a bit tongue in cheek when you said school wouldn't believe you?

SunshineAndFizz · 16/01/2023 07:24

Shamelessly here to find out if you escape.

I'd love to see your Amazon delivery instructions Grin

SunshineAndFizz · 16/01/2023 07:26

"Can you Fatima Whitbread my package over the hedge please?" Grin

Kevinyoutwat · 16/01/2023 07:28

I love these threads just for how irate some other posters get.

”Why can’t you do this, why can’t you do that, why, why, WHY?!”

Chill out.

Amazon delivery instructions

Please open package and cut path to the door leave on doorstep (when you find it)

EccentricElizabeth · 16/01/2023 07:50

I’d just have phoned a local gardener or tree surgeon.

My oldest suggested leaving a can of petrol by the front gate with a note asking Amazon to do just that Grin

It's starting to get light now so we are going to make our escape attempt soon.

I have never used a chainsaw but I did buy a face guard. I promise I will only use it as a last resort. If we can get out using the hedge trimmer and shears I will wait for someone proficient in the use of chainsaws to come and help me remove the thicker branches.

Please use your shears and garden tools to cut back some rose bushes so your dd can get out by the side gence and put the chainsaw in the hands of someone who knows how to use one. Mistakes with a chainsaw can easily be lethal and you don't have the right gear, or any training and you are dealing w wood under tension and at height. Honestly OP it sounds like an accident waiting to happen.😞

The gate is behind the red circle.

Can’t you get over the railings?

dolor · 16/01/2023 08:13

this is going into mumsnet classics, right?

Has anyone else done the first aid training where they show the Nick Knowles clip about the farmer who cut his arm off with the chainsaw and walked down the road to get help? 🤢

cooldarkroom · 16/01/2023 08:18

wait till morning,
put on gardening gloves
chop one side of one rose bush back (they should be chopped back at least 50% every winter, (they will grow & bloom fine & won't get leggy & weedy)
get an old towel to cover the remaining spikes
& maybe a chair (or 2 chairs one for each side of the fence)
DD gets over & goes to school

I wouldn't throw the chain saw over the fence, its not a cuddly toy.

Shitfather · 16/01/2023 08:19

Seems like lots of drama over nothing. A mobile adult can over that fence easily. Do you like drama in other areas of your life?

sashh · 16/01/2023 08:21

Could you call a gardener or someone who knows how to use tools to get in to you?

amberedover · 16/01/2023 08:24

Another here saying CHAIN SAWS ARE DANGEROUS .
Secateurs are what's needed ,not hedge trimmers and shears.

Frequency · 16/01/2023 08:29

Honestly, secateurs and loppers will not cut through some of the bigger branches. I have tried. They're like 4/5 inches in diameter. But they will get through the smaller branches that have collapsed in the wind, once I clear those and we can get out I can see how many of the bigger branches are still in the way and decide where to go from there.

LlynTegid · 16/01/2023 08:29

Good luck OP.

If you relied on Evri you'd never get your chain saw.

Doris86 · 16/01/2023 08:31

Surely you can just jump a fence or take a panel out, and get out through a neighbours garden/house.

I have but really it's a bit of an anomaly - most bad chainsaw accidents and you bleed out in a couple of minutes and you're not walking anywhere. When we use chainsaws at work each operator carries an army issue wound dressing which are impregnated with crystals to basically form a mega clot for catastrophic injuries. The aim is to get the dressing applied in less than a minute.

Newmum0322 · 16/01/2023 08:31

Ask him honestly about what a long engagement offers. Chance to save money for example? and just speak openly about how you feel.

Make it VERY clear though, that any children born will initially take your name. It’s not your choice to remain unmarried for any length of time and you won’t sacrifice sharing the same name as your DC because he wants a long engagement into his 40s!

Maireas · 16/01/2023 08:32

Is there any reason why you can't climb over into someone's garden at the back or side and ask to go through their house?
Haven't read the whole thread, apologies if this has been asked already.

Newmum0322 · 16/01/2023 08:32

Hahaha ok… I obviously ended up on the wrong thread somewhere! Apologies. Ignore my post 😂🙈

Untitledsquatboulder · 16/01/2023 08:33

Oh and a common or garden bowsaw will get through a 6" branch easily. I wouldn't even get my chainsaw out for that.
