We're trapped in the house!

A hedge has fallen in front of the gate and we cannot get out of the front garden. And Amazon cannot get in to deliver the chain saw we ordered a couple of days ago when we noticed the hedge was starting to look a bit out of control and the branches were too thick for the hedge trimmer.

I'm thinking if we use the hedge trimmer on the smaller branches and try a normal saw on the thicker branches we might be able to get it small enough to climb over/through but we cannot start until it is light and it doesn't get light until after DD leaves for school.

I can't tell the school the truth can I? They won't believe DD cannot get to school because she can't get out of the front garden, will they?

Surely you can just jump a fence or take a panel out, and get out through a neighbours garden/house.

My thoughts exactly. Unless you're living in some Medieval fortified walled city.

Just here for the ending

BordoisAgain · 16/01/2023 08:33

Phone round some treesurgeons or gsrdners, explain the situation and see if they can come and remove it for you as an urgent job.

k1233 · 16/01/2023 08:39

You need to buy a pruning saw. They are super sharp and wizz through branches without killing you.

Sorry op I know you have a lot going on been trapped an all but I’m invested in this now and laid on the sofa with a cold so please can we have a daylight pic of the situation and also a photo once resolved . Thankyou 😂

Maireas · 16/01/2023 08:53

With a bit of luck, they've got a stepladder, gone over to a neighbour's house and through their front door.

DeadDonkey · 16/01/2023 08:56

Just phone a tree surgeon - they deal with fallen trees near me within an hour or two. It's definitely not a 999 call.

silverclock222 · 16/01/2023 09:07

Jeezo no wonder the world is in such a mess. Does noone have any common sense these days? Put a blanket over it, cut back using shears etc

katepilar · 16/01/2023 09:07

I am amazed that with all the time and tools you've had you arent able to cut your shortest way through to the fence so you can climb over it at the first possible place. Hope you are sorted by now.

BliainNua · 16/01/2023 09:08

I missed all the excitement overnight, best of luck with the great escape this morning @Frequency 😁

call the fire brigade

FFS. You haven't suggested it OP so I assume you wouldn't but seeing as it was mentioned - please don't ever call the fire brigade because you have a fairytale hedge based situation.

The fire brigade would come out in this circumstance. They deal with all manner of rescues other than fire. If a call for a life threatening situation came in they would just leave. They wouldn’t deal with removal of the bush but would come and give to access.

mum11970 · 16/01/2023 09:11

Obviously slowly cutting back yourself or calling a tree surgeon out would be a better option but if neither can be done the FB would come out.

Haha yeah, they'd fail in the first hour of the apocalypse! 😂

ShippingForecastMeditator · 16/01/2023 09:31

What do any of us do when we don’t have the tools/skills to do a job? Call someone who does, surely? Why waste money on a dangerous piece of equipment you’d never use again when you can phone a professional to do the job instead? Very strange lack of logical thinking.

Ladybrrrd · 16/01/2023 09:42

I can't believe some of the vitriol and nastiness towards the OP! Seriously, chill out and give people a chance.

Anyway I'm shamelessly placemarking.

EccentricElizabeth · 16/01/2023 07:50

I’d just have phoned a local gardener or tree surgeon.

At 10pm? Would you really?

Frequency · 16/01/2023 09:48

We're free, sort of. The path is still completely blocked but I have made a hole to the gate.

I need to go back out because I doubt Royal Mail or Amazon will squeeze their way through but I'd run out of coffee and fags so as soon as I could get through the gate I went to the shop.

I used a handsaw in the end. The shears were getting us nowhere. I'd still be out there next week using those.

We're trapped in the house!

OP, I still don’t understand why you couldn’t get your kids to climb into a neighbour’s back garden and exit through neighbour’s house to get to school on time?

LikeTearsInRain · 16/01/2023 09:54

How dramatic.

After all that you were able to use tools already in your position to cut through some branches.

Alternatively you could have contacted your neighbours and had stuff passed over the fence or used ladders/bins to get over and go to school that way.

Have a good day.

That's been asked (or a variant) quite a few times.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 16/01/2023 10:00

I really should put my glasses on! I thought the birdbath was your child you had put there to show us the scale of your problem 🤷‍♀️🤣

I know! Including by me. I was asking why it hadn’t been answered…
