We're trapped in the house!

A hedge has fallen in front of the gate and we cannot get out of the front garden. And Amazon cannot get in to deliver the chain saw we ordered a couple of days ago when we noticed the hedge was starting to look a bit out of control and the branches were too thick for the hedge trimmer.

I'm thinking if we use the hedge trimmer on the smaller branches and try a normal saw on the thicker branches we might be able to get it small enough to climb over/through but we cannot start until it is light and it doesn't get light until after DD leaves for school.

I can't tell the school the truth can I? They won't believe DD cannot get to school because she can't get out of the front garden, will they?

PS I feel for you OP but I would love it if the hedge that adjoins my neighbours fell to the ground

OP you do realise that this makes you…

Have you called 911? You are trapped in your house, there’s safety concerns in case of a fire or that you decide to take the risk of getting impaled on the railings or hurt yourself trying to remove the blockage.

They normally send the firemen with chainsaws (or at least that’s what they do here when a big tree topples over.

Theunamedcat · 15/01/2023 23:00

I got trapped in my house once my ex went out and took my keys he also had his own and it was a door that locks dd clambered out the window to some friends who did the school run for me I could not get out the window I was heavily pregnant at the time I had the back door key but not the back GATE key so I was stuck 🙃

I’d put it on your local FB group! There must be someone out there handy with a chainsaw. People on local FB groups love things like this.

Yeah, this. I could probably post now and someone would come round tonight with a chainsaw. Our locals live for this stuff. The epic snow a few weeks ago was brilliant, so many people out with tractors and Landrovers playing heroes. Fair play to them, I'm not criticising they were amazing and helped a lot of people, but they definitely enjoyed it!

GetThatHelmetOn · 15/01/2023 23:01

I know someone who got trapped between the internal and external front door. She pulled the internal door behind her to lock it before realising she had left the key to the external door inside! 😁

Frequency · 15/01/2023 23:02

My neighbor is very sensitive to noise. She'd have kittens if someone turned up with a chainsaw tonight.

Our back garden is huge. We can get a safe distance from the house if there is a fire without the risk of impalement so I'm sure we'll be fine for tonight.

OP "I can't tell the school the truth can I? They won't believe DD cannot get to school because she can't get out of the front garden, will they?"

show them the picture.

if it makes you feel better, I was late for work once because there was a bird in my flat and it wouldn't leave. I took a video for my boss!

It's Baby Yoda, surely? He should be able to use the Force to move the bush...

Wow i didn't believe you until i saw the picture. (Sorry but thats actually quite funny 🤣🤣) Just let her have the day off she can help you cutting the Bush. Email the school with the picture

I'm sure the school would love the excuse "DD can't come to school today as she has to help me trim my bush" 😂Bet noone has tried that one before!

shard5 · 15/01/2023 23:09

We've had a student who couldn't get to school because a large tree had collapsed at the entrance to their cul de sac. It had been reported in the news so we sort of knew she might be stuck ( along with other neighbours and families).
They lived quite a distance away and normally came by car, the weather has been so rough I'm sure the school won't bat am eyelid.

Bluekerfuffle · 15/01/2023 23:12

Missing the point, but if there’s no back exit, do you wheel your bins through the house or just keep them out front permanently?

Theunamedcat · 15/01/2023 23:13

My youngest two had time off school because they ate a BOX of oranges and I was afraid of "consequences"

I was late for work as a very young adult because someone urinated on my flat door handle 🤢 and as an older adult because there was a dog in my garden they said....you don't have a dog? I KNOW!

My back exit leads to an alleyway right next to the front door

There's a side gate to the front garden from the back garden. The front gate is the only exit off the property.

DD is going in late and will help trim the bush. She's loving the drama and has been outside taking photos for her school group chat.

The poor Just Eat man must have thought I was insane when he called. It was genuinely fine this morning so when he called to say he couldn't get past the tree I thought he meant the two thick branches that were sticking out on the path and told him to duck under them or walk on the grass.

of course you can tell the school the truth - why wouldnt you?

MoreHairyThanScary · 15/01/2023 23:17

Why not just tie a rope to it and pull it out of the way, if it's weak enough to fall over you could pull it to one side to allow your dd to school.

Why would she call 911? I’m assuming she’s not in America.

GoldilockMom · 15/01/2023 23:20

Well if DD has explained in a group chat that’s the kids will tell the teachers anyway.
