Are there any branded items that you once thought you would never compromise on, that the price rises have made you rethink?

As the title says really. This hit me today when I went to grab a box of our usual Crosta and Molicca branded breadsticks off the shelf. They were one thing that I always said were worth the extra. But today the price was up to £1.65, from about £1 a year ago and I did think that I should revert to a cheaper option. I appreciate it's not an essential product but still.
I'm still hanging in there with Green Giant Sweetcorn, but that's on dodgy ground.

In some ways I think it's lucky that supply issues over the last few years have forced me to try own brands/alternatives as I have swapped an awful lot of branded items already.

Before anyone jumps on me I do appreciate how fortunate I am to have the luxury of buying anything other than the most basic essentials, I know how many people out there are just grateful to eat at the moment.

I’ve previously said no to lots of things I’m now living without. And it’s fine!

Like - car breakdown cover, Heinz everything, decent olive oil, fairy washing powder.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 03/02/2023 22:13

I'd happily give up any of those with exception of break down cover. I have no clue when it comes to car mechanics and am rubbish in the cold. So the fear of breaking down and sitting shivering my arse off on the side of a motorway trying to organise recovery, keeps me paying the premiums.

I have however dropped the branded shampoo and conditioner. Turns out Aldi's own is exactly the same.

We were loyal Heinz beans customers for twenty years. Their prices are outrageous now so we switched to M&S beans at 50p a can and just as nice!

Sillybanana · 28/02/2023 20:40

Yep I’ve stopped buying Heinz beans, I also bought Lidl’s own brand mayonnaise instead of Hellmans.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 28/02/2023 20:42

Mostly bought supermarket own-brands anyway, but I've stopped buying butter - back to margarine Sad

coodawoodashooda · 28/02/2023 20:44

Definitely heinze here too.

unchienandalucia · 28/02/2023 20:48

Cereal. And own brand mars and twix

spartanrunnergirl · 28/02/2023 20:50

Washing powder .. switched from Ariel pods to own brand and it's fine. All cleaning products also. Food wise I remember someone on TV ages ago saying every time you do a shop, swap one thing for a basic version and try it out, It's a great way to experiment.

Theyresexpeoplemn · 28/02/2023 20:51

Still sticking to nescafe coffee, kelloggs cornflakes, weetabix and lurpak, but it's a free for all on just about everything else!

Woolandwonder · 28/02/2023 20:53

Heinz beans. So expensive now!

Startuplife · 28/02/2023 20:53

Yep beans here as well. I’m not exactly a connoisseur of baked beans but I honestly can’t tell the different between Aldi and Heinz.

DP used to be such a brand snob but now our cupboards are full of things like Aldi ketchup, mayo, hula hoops etc. The only thing he hasn’t economised on yet is marmite.

MrNook · 28/02/2023 20:53

Cereal (Cheerios and crunchy nut). The supermarket own brand just isn't the same!

MrNook · 28/02/2023 20:54

Ooos pressed post too soon! But I can't warrant £5 on a box of cereal

Theyresexpeoplemn · 28/02/2023 20:55

Always used fairy non bio clothes washing liquid but just changed to asda sensitive and it's lovely

Iris1976 · 28/02/2023 20:56

It has always always had to be Helmanns mayo but now happy enough with thee Batt's one from Lidl, closest dupe I've found.

Minieggbrownies · 28/02/2023 21:03

Hardly buy any branded food now. Aldi beans, Aldi or Sainsburys cereals, Aldi fish fingers, Aldi bread. Even Aldi coffee. The only thing we do buy branded is Mayo and Ketchup.

Still using Fairy soap powder and washing up liquid

MeganLogan · 28/02/2023 21:04

We’ve downgraded ketchup. A small bottle for £3.50? Hellmans was £1.

I won’t give up lurpak

fussyferalkids · 28/02/2023 21:05

Ketchup and baked beans

I'm keeping my Mayo though 😂

MaverickSnoopy · 28/02/2023 21:06

Heinz beans - have switched to Tesco value. We go through so many tins a week that we had to. The children haven't noticed at all.

I bought Aldi mayo the other day and will only buy hellmans on offer now. I have Heinz tomato ketchup on my radar but DH would know that it wasn't and genuinely hates all of the others. I've tried decanting in the past and be knew straight away! It's been his thing since childhood.

Beans - do you mean the Stockwell ones or Tesco own-brand?

BlueThroughandThrough · 28/02/2023 21:14

Swapped from Fairy non bio to an eco egg for laundry now. It's actually really good and reduces the drying time. Doesn't smell as strong but that suits me with my sensitive skin

fairgame84 · 28/02/2023 21:15

I've just ditched Warburtons toastie for own brand.
Hellmans mayo got snubbed for own brand last week.
We tried to ditch Anchor butter but all 3 of us hated own brand so we're sticking with it for now.

Lcb123 · 28/02/2023 21:18

Very rarely buy branded. Often it’s the same products. Usually the unbranded is healthier

Ripleysgameface · 28/02/2023 21:20

Bisto gravy. I don't know what has happened there but it was £3 in Tesco for the small tub!!
Their own brand was 85p so that's what I bought and was fine.

Also Primula, I love it and used to stick up on it when it was on offer for £1 but it's £1.85 now and rarely on offer.
